BIG Canal ROACH | Caught on the Waggler Float

Спорт

Catching big Roach on the Leeds and Liverpool canal in Lancashire. My original plan was to fish for Bream using groundbait and sweetcorn and Perch using worms. I would be using a waggler float and size 14 hook.
I kicked off the swim by feeding three, tangerine-sized balls of Sonubaits Natural Bream groundbait, laced with sweetcorn. I fed these two-thirds of the way across the canal. Leaving this feed for an hour, I fed chopped worm close-in and targeted Perch.
Initially, I caught Perch on float-fished worms and then started to catch big Roach on float-fished sweetcorn. The Roach were in excellent condition.
Catching big, canal Roach is a wonderful way to spend a day on the canal.

Very nice roach man! I'm envious, I've seen some good ones on the surface at my end a few weeks ago. But they never seem to show in catches. The odd better one I've had has come to half a lobworm. I must do a canal one soon!

Cheers mate. I think the corn helped sort out the bigger ones. I spotted some chunks when I was fly fishing. New stretch. Close to home. A nice discovery 👍🎣 Tight lines

@000fishing I ought to give the bit near me a go near Frederick's, there's big roach cruising in hot weather, usually in the same spot. Have to work out a way of getting ice cream cones onto the hook!🤣

@@000fishing sorry! Frederick's ice cream shop has a seating area backing onto the canal, I figure a few cones getting thrown in, also bread for ducks and Canada geese

Nice roach .. love fishing the L/L canal , do you ever use bread punch on the hook and crumb groundbait ?

Cheers. Yes, it’s one of my favourite methods. I plan to do a video in near future. What’s your favourite method for the L/L?

@@000fishing I always like to start on bread punch /crumb short until it fishes itself out , its quite a busy stretch so a lot of people feed bread to the ducks close in and the fish are used to seeing it

Think you caught about the same amount in a day as ive had all season so far!! Im back out on tuesday to try your fishing a whole worm over chopped worm trick and mixing the soil through my groundbait. Can you suggest a decent all round groundbait for me and what to add?Or should i use mashed bread instead? I think the resevoir I'll be fishing holds mostly roach and perch a few trout and ive heard rumours of the odd tench being caught. Any further advice would be much appreciated as i"m struggling through my first season of course fishing.

Hi Paul, if you are fishing chopped worm, use something like Dynamite Baits, Worm Meal - a good perch attractor. Sensas - Gros Gardons is excellent for roach and Sonubaits also do a good range of Natural Groundbaits (non-fishmeal). Use a dark-coloured groundbait if using soil/chopped worm. Good luck - Let me know how you get on.

@000fishing thanks for getting back to me so quickly, I've also got some frozen casters, maggots and corn to use up. Is there a chance of overfeeding if I add this to groundbait with chopped worm and soil? Or is it a case of use it all a vary my hook baits?

It’s difficult to say without knowing more about the place that you are fishing. It’s usually a good idea to start off feeding sparingly and see how the fish respond. If there’s lots of hungry fish in your swim, you can feed more bait, but don’t overdo it. Feed then see how the fish respond 👍🎣

@000fishing thanks mate, I'll let you know how I get on. Will probably fish a small link ledger on 1 rod and float on the other at varied depths starting on the bottom and try find the right combo of method/ baits.
