Big Boi and JID Meet For Rolling Stone's Musicians on Musicians

Atlanta's storied Stankonia Studios feel like the site of a family reunion as J.I.D walks in with a grin and daps up Big Boi with Stevie Wonder’s “As” spilling from the speakers. Both are soft-spoken, and you can barely hear what they say to each other as they exchange greetings. But it’s a safe guess that they’re taking a moment to show respect for each other’s approach to life and their shared craft.
Fifty years after hip-hop began in the Bronx, both of these Atlanta rappers have done their part to expand the definition of the genre. Start in 1994, when Big Boi and André 3000 created a bible for Southern hip-hop with Outkast’s Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, written in the basement studio they called the Dungeon and recorded right here. Or flash forward to last year, when J.I.D recorded parts of his most recent, and most personal, offering, The Forever Story, in these same studios. Big Boi helped establish that Atlanta can never be left out of the conversation, and J.I.D has helped maintain the standard he set.
With the cameras on and lights up, they settle into a languid Southern rhythm. Much like their rhymes, their conversation feels like a late-summer evening full of lightning - bright flashes that illuminate everything in sight, unpredictable yet direct. Big Boi, 48, cracks a joke that sends J.I.D, 33, into a fit of laughter. J.I.D fires something back that brings a large smile to Big Boi’s face.
Big Boi reminds us that this isn’t the first time Rolling Stone has asked him to take part in Musicians on Musicians - it’s just the first time he had someone in mind who he wanted to sit down with. This time, when the ask came in, he knew. He snaps his fingers as he recalls how he replied: “I told them, ‘Get me my dawg, man.’”

He has his Venus very close to Mercury in Scorpio. It is known that that creates the best speaking,singing and rapping voices. Snoop Dogg has that too. Michael Jackson, Jeff Buckley and Thom Yorke too as some examples

I love how JID is allowing himself to fan out. He should! Big Boi is hip hop royalty. It’s nice to see someone love OutKast as much as I do, and show respect where it’s due
Big Boi is the diverse ATL legendary unc, love him. JID is great, his flow is appreciated. Every time I watch these the biggest thing I notice is, the work ethic is so different now to get to the top, compared to how it used to be.

This makes my heart sing. This is essentially what J. Cole was attempting to do with Lil Pump years ago, but Pump was standoffish. We DESPERATELY need the different eras of Hip Hop to come together. It's all Hip Hop at the end of the day.

The problem with the J Cole-Lil Pump meet up is that Pump was intimidated. Usually when someone knows that they are not on the other person’s level lyrically, they will try to fall back on “I got more money”. He couldn’t say that either. In the rap game, if you have enough of a gimmick, you can make a bunch of money off of kids at first but when the kids move on, you’re suck with being a broke rapper who doesn’t have skills to fall back on. Everyone in the industry has chewed you up and moved on and no one respects you. I can’t say that lol pump is broke right now because I don’t know where he is but his career seems to be over and it only lasted less than 2 years.

Interesting fact...if JID was about 4 inches taller and 20 lbs heavier, he would've been a first round draft pick at cornerback! Young fella played on a team that was stacked w talent that had players to win multiple national championships at UF and LSU and a Superbowl winner that never played a down in high school...the original stick up kid that turned his life around, Bruce Irvin. I feel the same way big boi feel. I definitely don’t listen to like 95% of these rappers today. But, J.I.D is one of the special ones that I actually like. He also kinda favors a young MJ and he has a more soulful aura about him to be such a young guy. He’s just……. Different

You can tell JID comfortable as hell cause he’s talkin to a hometown legend. He get to be as southern as he wanna be cause big ain’t gone say “say that again?” Or “what did you say?”. It’s like movin to another state and gettin a job somewhere and somebody there is from where you’re from.
