    They’re basically 383’s with a 440’s bore. Basically…. Both the 383 and 400 are short deck motors, the 426 to 440 are raised deck blocks. But, if you want to go crazy you can use Raised Block connecting rods, or even Hemi rods in them and get a very high rod length to stroke ratio of 2-1 or slightly less. The guys at engine masters took a Mopar 383 and a SBC stroker 383 and built them as closely as possible. Both had the static compression and they used the same cam grind. They ran nearly identical torque and horsepower, at the same rpm! That says something about rod length!

    Very nice video Joe. I really like the way you put it all together. Your represent the project and job very well. Was a pleasure, as always to work for you. I can't wait for the build. I can almost hear it bust off and run. This is a realistic build that most people could do. The principals would apply to most engines. Thanks for sharing and the kind words. I appreciate everyone who watched and listened to the videos. Take care, Ed.

    If the heads are off, I would check the bore just to be sure, even if it has the pistons in it. One thing Ed of E&D taught me years ago is always check every thing. Even after he had done some machine work for me a few times, I still checked his work, but as usual it was right on !! He is the only machine shop around that I trust. Awesome!! Love this build, I am a huge fan of the B with 3.375" stroke, as you know. Used those pistons in my 406" B powered Gremlin gasser build, and the rods in a friend's 446 RB Dart nitrous grudge racer (the 440 Source I-beam 6.760 replacements, using bolts/nuts). The rods held fine through many low-6sec 1/8mi passes (175hp N2o) and I've never had a problem with the KB hypers in 360s, 383s, 400s, 440s (mine) and even a 340 (a friend's), with proper ring gaps. Also, floating the pins steel-on-steel works fine with .001" clearance or slightly less. I'll pay $400 for that camshaft if you'll sell, now that I'm "intranet famous!!" 😅🙃🙂

    Nice vid & glad somebody is giving a Mopar 400 some love. A question,Mopar Joe,abou your using a 360 small block flex plate on this. Does the 360 flex plate bolt holes match up to the 400 crank bolt holes ? Also,why not just use a 400 flex plate ? Would it have to have too much weight added to balance (like the 440 flex plate you showed with clay) ?

  • @JustMoparJoe

    @JustMoparJoe

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Shane. The crank flanges are identical on almost all wedge engines. I believe Magnum small blocks have to slot one hole to use the old style plates. I also heard that early 413’s and 361’s had a different flange. I wanted to use my flex plate to save the $200 of buying a new one. The SFI rating had already wiped off this one, and I won’t need it for a 360 again. The way he drilled it, I can still use factory stuff later if need be, and it minimally affect balance.

    All 1972 400 4 barrel crankshafts are internally balanced forged steel. All 1973 manual transmission 400 crankshafts are internally balanced forged steel. 1973 automatic transmission 400 crankshafts are externally balanced cast iron. All 1974 and newer 400 crankshafts are externally balanced cast iron. I took a 4 barrel 400 out of a 1972 Fury police car and got the internally balanced forged steel crankshaft. I've had good results at high RPM with the cast Keith Black pistons, but they can break more easily than the smaller diameter small block 360 ones. In the big blocks, the correct piston clearance is important to keeping the large diameter Keith Black cast pistons from cracking up. The longer stroke 440 stroke puts even more stress on the pistons than the 400 stroke. With the 440 stroke, I just with forged pistons. These days, big block Chrysler pistons are expensive, cast or forged. I'd go cheaper than forged if I could find a larger price difference, but I haven't had much luck in price savings lately.

    Will a non-roller 318 intake manifold fit on a 1985 318 roller lifter engine?

    Thanks guys. I passed on a used intake recently because I wasn't sure if it would fit.

    If you took a Wedge B 400 block and a offset ground 440 crank to make a 474ci, whet kind of power could you get?

    I love the low decks. This engine ends up making 1.3 Hp per cube on the dyno videos. Check those out if you can. The power is in the head flow as well. These were pretty conservative heads, but had some nice modifications. 474x1.3 is 616. I’m pretty well on point with that and the 448 I just built and dynoed. Check that one out when you can🫡

    Hey Joe. I have been debating. Should I rebuild a 318 magnum, or replace it with a 360 magnum? On a 2001 1500 4x4 that hauls a lot. Also, I been looking at buying a built long block vs rebuilding my own. I am not experienced enough to do it all from scratch myself. Well, I COULD, but not sure I could trust myself. Any suggestions?

    Hey Rob! A 360 will offer you better torque for towing and hauling. It’s main downside is it will get worst fuel mileage overall than a 318. That may just be a side effect of a lead foot. A built long block is usually fine in most scenarios. Definitely use a reputable company. As for the what Bill says, he couldn’t be further from correct. Buying large CC trick flow heads and putting them on a stock short block, with stock cam, to put into a towing/hauling application, would hurt your torque production where you’d need it most. I would probably go with a built 360 with a company that can warranty it for as long as possible.

    I don't know how much work it takes to get 500 horsepower out of the Edelbrock heads I hope it happens but I have my doubts just my opinion
