Big Al's Cessna
UPDATE: Plans for the 'mini' FT Commuter are here!
forum.flitetest.com/index.php...
I up-scaled my "Mighty Mini Cessna 150" in honor of my grandfather "Big Al", who taught me to fly and cemented my love of aviation.
Thanks, Grampa Al.
Also thanks to Flite Test for letting me experiment and test their upcoming "Monster Radial" motor! It's a beast! I can't wait to try it in other airframes! :D
Last but not least, thanks to Alex Grigoreas for shooting ground AND aerial video for this, and asking me good questions to keep it interesting! :D

That's awesome, even the mains are just the a 152, awesome build. Now make a Mooney with retracts. Lol
Definitely should be a speed build kit on flite test . So far the best diy foam board Cessna I’ve seen yet , perfect size . I would love to try and build your design soon 👍 it would look awesome painted up
Great job, as always, Ben!
Really great build .love that dedicated it to your grandfather thanks Ben for sharing this
I love it when a plane/build has a story behind it, and yours is awesome! Well done!
Awesome flight Ben and great landing greased it! it flies so scale to the full size I can tell and has the beautiful lines of the classic 150 the plane looks amazing in the air! Man great job. I love the little 150 you designed I'm wanting to get one of those and can't wait to fly. This big one with the flaps looks like a dream to fly. loving your videos man. And how your Grandpa taught you to fly so young this is a great tribute to him. Inspiring
That looks great, I would love a set of plans one day! Your planes are always super clean and all the piece look super tight fitting, well done!(flys even better than it looks!!!)
Looking forward to all your plans. GREAT JOB from Yuma.
yes finally some big scale foam planes with plans
Wonderful video , could watch these all day . Many thanks from the UK
You never cease to impress!!!
A fine build, Ben. With that gasser prop it has a real nice sound, too.
What a lovely flying Cessna Ben,and the big radial motor works so well,love the wing fixing will use that idea myself in the future it is simple and effective.
Wow! Great job, Ben!
This has to be one of my favorite RC related videos of yours Ben. The plane design is amazing and it looks like a great flyer. That in and of itself makes this a great video. What makes it exceptional is the back story with you and your grandpa. Loved it. Thanks Big Al! It will be my great honor and privilege to make these plans for you and your grandpa. Exceptional work, as always. You are an inspiration. Keep doing what you're doing. BTW...I see some frosted tips in your future. XD

...... OR at least a 200% version?? 👍👍
That's gotta be the most scale flying RC Cessna I've ever seen. Awesome stuff
Great story....Great aircraft.....Great video....and Thanks for sharing it all with us.....now Flitetest needs to have that larger aircraft kit soon as well......beautiful aircraft ( subbed )
I'm a 150/152 aholic, and a scale nut, and you really nailed the shape and outline of the 150. Normally the foam board airframes don't do a whole lot for me, but yours looks really really good, Super job on a nice model!!!!
Nice... bigger models are often more docile than the smaller versions..this is a good candidate for the thicker FT Board.. And adding to the flitetest builds
We need a flite test kit! Great job! super nice looking!

Of the 240% version DEFINITELY!!! 😲😎 Even 200%!
Very nice foam Cessna, and really enjoyed the memories. The facilities there look great. Tell your dad that's some good camera work!

Thanks! Behind the camera that was actually my good friend Alex Grigoreas! And thanks to the magic of editing, he was also the guy behind the chase footage, even while he was talking :) I forgot to give him a proper shoutout in the episode, check out his channel here too! kzread.info/dron/trpZz9MNdBbPAyAigqd3gA.html
Trippin out, u r a GREAT TEAM!
Beautiful job, Ben... Really fantastic airplane! 😃
So cool. Nice job Ben 👍👍😎
Excelente cessna, beautiful fly👏👏👏
Thats a big nice cessna with a nice stearable nose weel and a big motor, good job Ben
Beautiful plane! Been a while since I've seen a civy aircraft and was like... oh I want one! That's a gorgeous flying field too, a bit jealous there...
Very nice plane love it
Beautiful!
Beautiful cessna.
would be so awesome getting plans for this great plane
BEAUTIFUL!!!
your build is so clean, my FT build always so messy
For some reason that looks so satisfying flying...
Nice job on your Cessna. I owned a full scale 1966 G model for 12 years.....ah yes the good ole days. I have 2 eflite carbon z cessnas now. My full scale days are over, so now I just enjoy my rc stuff.
Ben, I watched this video in April when you released it but you raised my curiosity mentioning your source model you built upon for this large model. You referenced your "Mighty Mini Cessna 150" design and wondered if that original model and plans might be available. Thank you. Jim

Flite Test is releasing my mini version as a speed build kit, called the FT Commuter! store.flitetest.com/flite-test-commuter-electric-airplane-kit-762mm-flt-1067/p977513
Very Cool!!!
Make plans with flitetest along with quick build kit! That would be amazing!
Please make plans available. I love this model.
Any idea of when or if plans / part list will be released , I definitely will be downloading it ASAP I have been waiting for a foam board Cessna of that size and look to be posted. I was waiting for flite test to come out with one but you nailed it 👍

The plans for this are really just scaled up from my original "Mini 150", which became the FT Commuter. So if you scale up the FT Commuter plans you've got it! forum.flitetest.com/index.php?resources/ft-commuter.74/
Have you posted the plans for this monster (large format) on the forums yet. Would love to see your mods for it from the small one.
Awesome plane Ben me you have plans for this available ?
Awesome build! Looks like it flies very scale. Will you be releasing plans?
@sloep

he said he will get them out in some way on the forum
It sure was busy today!
Can you release the design for the full size version. What want to build a large one.
I think some aluminum ducting tape on all the leading edges would look great and help with durability.
Cool plane. You have a great flying field; where is it, and how much are annual member fees?
hello friend very good job how can I find those plans at that scale and that is bigger than that of flitetest
Cessna is a really fun plane, my kind of flying....
does anyone know where i can get the scaled up plans for the ft commuter.
Hey, buddy, will it be pocible for the perfection of your plane that you make a video motranstrating it in detail and that you scale from the original? Thank you
Plane seems beyond locked. Uber locked. Static through the air.
Don't you have any video that covers the whole process of making this nice plane?
i like your shirt Ben
Awesome! Would much rather fly this one than the "mini", as a newbie. I hear you that that plans are "just" 240% of the mini, but what about plans for that steerable nosewheel? I need that at my club.
@TheHarberHangar
4 жыл бұрын
The steerable nose wheel was very much figured out "on the fly" (no pun intended). :D Look a similar nose wheel installation from a gasser of similar size and mimic it as much as you can.
Where are the free plans?
I would have played more attention to that spitfire with a kolm in it
Correct me if I'm wrong, please, but wouldn't it be better if the wing struts slid into their fitting in the other direction? Instead of the motion moving toward the nose, have it fit in sliding back towards the tail? Pushing through the air in flight makes me think that can come loose.
@TheHarberHangar
5 жыл бұрын
Possibly, but with a U-shaped pin one side will always be sliding out the back. The angles and friction-fit nature of the rod and tube mostly ensure that accidental disconnection is highly unlikely. I did not observe any loosening of either pin after any flight, and I flew it at least four or five times that day. Good point though!
@kevinhoskins1897

What about using something like a safety pin - something that locks around one end of itself? Also, if you are attending FF’19 in Ohio, please bring this plane. It will be great to see it fly in person.

Depron mm??
What percentage to you scale up from the mini version...150% or 200% etc?
@TheHarberHangar

This one was actually scaled up 240% if I remember correctly.

Not for this one exactly, however the plans for the FT Commuter are out, and this is just a 240% scale-up of that model, literally. I added a few doubler-panels in a few places, but it's literally a 240% scale of the 'Mini Cessna'. FT Commuter Plans: forum.flitetest.com/index.php?resources/ft-commuter.74/
You two are fn HOT!
Thank you Ben. This is probably just my speed. I look forward to your painted rendering. Jim
