Thanks, that was a nice informative video, explaining the difference between both; without getting too much technical.

It would have been more informative if there were more details about the mechanical advantages, efficiencies, efforts, work advantage , life, wear resistance etc which are the actual parameters of comparison. Nice and informative video but 2 points 1) u need special tool to remove cassette also. U mentioned like cassette doesn't need any tool.rather freewheel needs opener and wrench but cassette needs, chain whip, remover and wrench. 2 tools in freewheel and 3 to remove cassette. 2) weight, because freewheel have freehub body so its weighted, and cassette is without freehub body so its lighter but bike doesn't run on only cassette so you should have mentioned freewheel with Hub and cassette with Hub...then compare weight.

Firstly thanks fir your detailed and elaborate videos. I like and enjoy them. I am a 74 year old newbee bicyclist located in Kolkata and was using an AHOY non geared bicycle. Now I would like to add 21 speed Shimano gears to my cycle and would appreciate very much your help and assistance. Please provide a buying link for trustworthy shops selling (online or courier despatch) original shimano gears, complete conversion kit with 21 shifters, derailleurs, crank set, freewheel, Hub/axle etc. Do you think I can install it all myself? Which tools will be needed? Will wait for your reply.

Appreciate your interest in cycling in this age group. Converting a non gear cycle to a geared one involves change of hub also, along with other accessories. It may be a bit too much and expensive for you to remove the spokes from existing non gear hub and re- install them in the new compatible hub to convert to multi freewheel. If you still want to proceed, get the work done by an experienced cycle mechanic. Cheers.

@A5 Flix You might be having cassette and not a freewheel, freewheel and cassette are both different. Cassette are easily upgradable but freewheel aren't.

Understood that cassette is latest tech as explained by many other bloggers...but the main idea seems still missing..how does cassette (over free wheel) impact usability like riding quality, speed etc.. other than provision to increase the number of gears and being a bit lighter (~250gms.. ).. also in which direction gears can be added i.e for speed or for slopes? does cassette adds comfort? is it more reliable?
