The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, NOT the believer, he convicts the believer of righteousness because of Christ. The believer IS pleasing to God, fully, no more pleasing today than yesterday and no less. The unbeliever is the one displeasing God, and the one who shrinks back into fear instead of recognizing the love of the Lord because of Jesus Christ.

Been a Pente for 30 years. And in that time my wife and my girls never had a cogent answer to the world when asked why they looked the way they did. It has always seemed like we have to perform doctrinal gymnastics to even try to explain it. To me that is a strike against it. After 30 years of wrestling with it trying understand, I’ve come to the conclusion it’s a man made doctrine, as is the clean shaven thing. I feel like it’s a bit of a spectacle that stands in the way of sinners finding the truth. My wife and I love the UPC, And I’ve not experienced elsewhere the same level of sincerity of its congregants, or the same manifestations of the Holy Spirit, nor the same resilience against the backsliding and apostasy of the majority of the church world today. So there is definitely something to separation from the world, that attracts special manifestations of the spirit of God and truly anointed preaching and teaching and revelations in the word that occurs in the UPCI that I don’t see happening in the Assembly of God as a whole for example.

Ro 12.1 talks about a living sacrifice, and our reasonable service. The One who gave His life for us should be good enough to say, whatever He asks is not too much. The dying was done at Calvary. The living is done in us and through us, because of His grace, mercy and truth every single day exhibited by the life we live.

Bro. Bernard is saying that women should grow their hair to its natural length, but an argument I’ve heard quite often is to keep the hair healthy, split ends should be cut and maintained. Would this not fall under taking care of our bodies as the temple, if women cut their hair ends for the overall health of the hair? From the distinction perspective, if cutting split ends is all that’s done to the hair, doesn’t that still provide ample distinction between a male and female? I would like to have an answer to this for when it is brought up with new converts, and even long time believers that are still trying to grasp Holiness.

How long is long? As long as it will grow, not cut, not trimmed, but uncut, men should cut hair and not have long hair, many men in Protestant and Catholic churches have no woman generally over 59-69 with hair even on her shoulders, it's cut almost as short as men in their church.

We should be consistent in and out of church. I cannot find anywhere in scripture where being at home its ok to for lets say women to wear men's apparel. I fully understand publicly this is where we are called to be show we are being separated to the Lord, Behind closed doors, at home where no eyes but family and God is what I feel is true worship unto the Lord. Our kids watch us, is it possibly we are teaching them to live two ways? One for in public and church but we go home and its all out the window. I don't feel we have to dress to the 9s at home but modesty is showing this is who I am and not for show.

You can apply holiness to any aspect of life or relationship and you choose to apply it to dress and woman. In the UPC their woman is their badge of holiness. It looks extremely strange to walk in one of their gatherings and all the women look like pilgrims and all the men are dressed really modern in skinny suits and such. Just remember what the Bible really says about one’s self righteousness is as filthy rags in the eyes of God. They may make it all the way with a few star’s on their crown but I hope they are not offended when they see me up there too!

And also repentance is more important to do! Holiness start from the heart. If our heart is not pure? How we could be Holy? That's why the Proverbs 4:23 tell us to Guard our heart. Only pure heart can see God!(Matt. 5:8) without Holiness we can't see the Lord. (Heb.12:14) it did not tell us to wear a long dress. But it is a part of Holiness also.

I agree with modesty and standards of dress and appearance. However, I take issue with what God has spoken being taken and preached as the doctrine of men just as the jews did in scripture. If God speaks to someone about their sinful habits, mannerisms, dress and appearance then it becomes rooted in the person. If men take it and enforce it upon others then they have no root in themselves.

I agree. Every time I hear this, although I have great respect for our apostolic fathers and would not dare disrespect what they stand for, my mind goes back in scripture to Joseph. Joseph was delivered and sold in Egypt by his brothers. We all know the story. But when it came time for him to be used by God to deliver his brothers from famine into Egypt, his family did not recognize him because he looked just like the Egyptians and he held high office. He was a holy man of God in his heart even though he was dressed in the Egyptian regalia. Secondly ,my mind goes to Paul he said “I became all things to all men that I might by all means save some.”Thirdly, my mind goes to Paul’s teachings when he said that if the Gentiles abstain from food sacrificed to idols and fornication they do well, when talking about the Jews superimposing their traditions on the new Christian Gentiles. From the above descriptions, Quakers and Muslims can be apostolic when we all know they do not represent holiness. Holiness is from the heart, not a cultural construct. Why aren’t the men of today wearing robes instead of pants? That’s because culture changes and holiness does not. I am African-American, and so is my wife. She suffers with alopecia. She is a beautiful bald black woman, but in some apostolic churches they want her to wear a wig! I ask you, is this what Christ intended?

I love the concept of applying ourselves to God aka living for Him, however, I do draw concern from the overall takeaway that most will extract from the topic and that is, to put human effort on the table to look the part to or for others to see or to do some thing just right to be then and therefore "holy." Even in this discussion, there wasn't a simple answer to give toward any question and this has led to people moving in zeal but not pertaining to knowledge or continuity of faith in the work of the cross which is the biggest draw back. We have to remember that our holiness and righteousness is prescribed to us first and foremost by God himself. He is the only one that can inherently do holy and righteous things. He extends His character to us when He justifies us with His HOLY Spirit. Then we become a holy, Full stop! That has to be digested to the extent that we understand that nothing we do can take that place nor be comparable to it. Our lives from this premise is an attempt to be examples of Godly living aka holiness aka letting our light shine but we shouldn't overdo or overthink practical resulted living that often produces an heir of self-righteousness in the believer. Roman's 14:20 "Hast thou faith? have it before God. Happy is he that condemnation not himself in that thing which he alloweth...for whatsoever is not of faith it sin." This goes both ways for the Spirit filled traditionalist and for the Spirit filled non-traditionalist. There is only one Spirit and we have to be led by it instead of trying to mimic someone else.

So biblical you will find no where in scripture where a woman has to wear a skirt or dress. They will use Deuteronomy 22:5 as the example but that was pertaining to war. The Bible tells us to be modest. It never gives a dress code for women or men. Clothes are made for women and men. They are made different so you will know which one belongs to men or women. As long as you are modest then your following Gods word. In biblical days men and women both wore robes. They only had like a ball thing tied to the bottom so men could use that to raise the robe to use the bathroom.

Tennis shoes, baseball caps, and many other garments were originally made for men! Pants weren't worn in the era, unless you are a priest under a robe. Modesty is covering up and not being lewd. It is also of the heart. Apostolic men look like everyone else and don't stand out. Some of the women are only known by their hair styles. It’s very easy to see when a woman is trying appear masculine. Most women aren’t trying to appear masculine. But yet the Bible clearly teaches we should be separate. It it’s not up to us to define for every individual.

No one wore pants during Jesus time , maybe a high priest under their tunic . They truly need to get rid of “ standards”. Skirts and dresses are also fitted to fit the women’s body to look proper. Again, man’s / ladies pants are different , I can never see a man wearing a romper etc. Men, walk around with a bulge in front but they wear pants/ shorts. Deuteronomy, 22- Has a lot don’t etc Plant two different seeds together, plow a horse and donkey together etc . Stone your first born for being rebellious etc . Pastor David Bernard - we are under grace and should practice modesty ( covering up in certain place ) NOT holy standards set by the UPCI. Dressing like a man would be considered cross dressing, shopping in the men’s department all the time etc . For example, looking / dressing how some trans people dress. Let’s readdress this issue. If not ladies shouldn’t wear t-shirts, tennis shoes, leggings etc. All meant for men decades ago.

I believe the main point of the talk was looked over or dismissed by some people. Pastor Bernard said a very interesting thing “holiness starts in the heart” When a person starts setting their own standards and placing their own beliefs before God, it’s evident that love may not be as strong as one believed it to be. It’s easy to live in the commodity that we live in now because of His sacrifice. Just like pastor Bernard mentioned, we are not saved by works or by law, but by grace. However, we can’t forget that Jesus came to fulfill the law, not abandon it. The reason He made that clear was to assure His followers that although we are saved by grace, there’s still a standard to be met in regards to our holiness. The verse they shared in the beginning couldn’t have been any clearer. A good exercise to practice every now and then, is to think to ourselves, how would we dress and present ourselves unto the Lord if He came to visit your church? If you knew that Jesus himself in the flesh would be making a guest appearance at your service, would you still dress the way you “believe” is ok? If the answer is “Yes” then maybe we need to examine our own hearts truthfully and find out for ourselves if we truly love Him as much as we believe we do. God bless you all :)

I believe UPCI is very hypocritical in the wearing of (pants; a garment that splits the legs). I say this because they have always said women should not even wear culottes but now it is ok for them to wear these skirts with leggings sewn in. They need to make up their mind. And yes I’m Pentecostal and attending a UPC church but I don’t agree with their outlook on this subject and if I could find a church that isn’t hypocritical on holiness standards but maintained oneness, baptism in Jesus name and the need of being filled with the Holy Ghost, I would change.

I’m still confused regarding the dress standard. You claim in this video it’s purpose is for the distinction in gender, separation from the world, but the specific garment culturally subjective. If a distinction is maintained between male and female pants and western culture acknowledges this distinction. Where is the issue? To be consistent, separation from the world through outward holiness, would have to apply to both men and women. Although, the standard attire for a Pentecostal man is indistinguishable from a worldly man. This rule isolates itself to just women. Since the majority of worldy women don’t wear dresses exclusively. Which doesn’t seem right. Even Dr. Bernard mentions that in his day, one of the reasons women began wearing pants was out of practically. I’d also add that their are several unisex articles of clothing that are worn by men both men and women. Our church and culture does not see at as a violation of gender distinction. E.g. Gloves, scarfs, hoodies, basic T shirts, etc. Hope you can see the logical inconsistencies in your position and can address. I welcome any and all feedback, always open to learning, I have been Pentecostal my entire life, and believe an absolute modesty for both sexes, but have never understood the rational behind the dress standards for women. God bless!

The rules don’t isolate itself to just women. Men are to distinguish from female attire…. Men are wearing females clothing in the San Francisco area ….. the idea is distinguish as a whole although both clothings of male and female have some of the same buttons ect

I understand where you are coming from. I think ultimately it comes down to your own convictions. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t have standards if you are in leadership or any of that. But for example, if you are a girl and wearing pants and you are working on your relationship with God, he wants that more than for you to wear a dress for man. It’s not a religion, it’s a relationship. I do believe that when you get the Holy Ghost, there will be a day where he will convict you to dress modestly but it’s when HE convicts you. So if you or your leadership feel convicted about wearing things that are unisex, that is between you and God. I do believe that it’s also the intention behind it and how it looks to other as well. Like for gloves, hats, and hoodies-it’s to keep you warm. Our body is a temple and we need to take care of it! God doesn’t want us to freeze to death and get hypothermia or freeze bite. Hopefully that makes sense. That is something my leadership has taught me:)

@@lexietrout6578 I don’t think having arbitrary rules/standards in place is healthy. You can’t make an assertion that God wants XYZ, without being able to make a biblical reasonable argument for it. That’s a slippery slope that leads to religious cults. My example of using gloves, hats, sweaters, was to poke a hole in the reasoning of saying clothing is absolutely exclusive to either gender, because it only is insofar that the culture appropriates it. The Spirit of God speaking to us has to be verified through his word. Always. Never trust your feelings as being the Holy Ghost without ensuring it lines up with what the Bible says. That is our ultimate authority. People are unreliable but Gods word is true. Be careful with blindly following leaders because they are your leaders. We must hold them accountable to the word and must approach their teachings with scrutiny. Study to show thyself approved.

That’s a lie because holiness starts with the inside then branches into the outside like a tree dress standards is an extension of holiness from the inside according to the word of God we are sanctified by His Word and His Word is how a young man shall cleanse his way which means we need to follow the dress standards of the Word and what our pastor says as long as the said pastor does not contradict the holy Word of God this is what we teach and believe concerning holiness as Apostolic Pentecostals

Lindsay, I enjoy this interview, however, the way UPC ladies dress, does draw attention to them. They stand out like a sore thumb, and it makes people ask questions like, “Who do these people think they are? Do they actually think they are more holy than everyone else”. This kind of dressing is causing more harm for Christians than you realize. A UPC lady can be spotted a mile away. Not because they are holy, but because their mode of dressing looks weird. Sorry, hope this does not offend you, but it is true. Ladies dress pants are not as revealing as a skirt blowing over your head.

Wearing such kind of clothing ...fully covered, modest, no skin baring in the Middle East (where I used to work btw) people rather appreciate you even agrees and praise the modestness especially the arabs who are residents of that country. So I don't think it is really about the UPC ladies way of dressing that draws thoughts like this but the person who thinks that way.
