What's So Spiritual about Fasting? | Episode 89

The Bible repeatedly refers to the practice of fasting, and, in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus made the assumption that His followers would fast. (See Matthew 6:16-18.) But what is so spiritual about going hungry? Dr. David K. Bernard explains the biblical purpose of fasting and how saying "no" to food can help you say "yes" to a closer relationship with God.

To clarify: I am not against a “Daniel fast.” As I mentioned, I believe God honors various means in which we discipline ourselves and seek him first. My point was simply that the normal fast in Scripture is from all food. The Book of Daniel gives two examples of a partial fast. In Daniel 1, Daniel and his friends partook of vegetables and water for ten days to demonstrate that they would thrive without eating the king’s food that was ceremonially unclean under Jewish law. This was the fast I referenced. In Daniel 10, Daniel set aside three weeks of mourning and prayer in which he didn’t partake of any pleasant (rich) food, meat, or wine and didn’t anoint himself (with fragrant lotions). - Dr. David K. Bernard

I'm still wet behind the ears to the idea of fasting, so please don't laugh if this is a stupid question. During a recent weeklong one-meal-per-day fast I found it difficult to focus on the goal of the fast instead of the hunger. In general, how do I teach myself to focus on Jesus instead of the act of fasting?

Could you do a video on "How To Talk, Teach & Interact With Trinitarians/People Who Believe In The Trinity" I've had so many conversations with them as a Oneness Apostolic Christian, but so many try so hard to justify their beliefs with little to no evidence. If they do use scripture or anything they try to insert the idea that the Trinity is there. How can we better approach this topic with them to help win them to truth? Thank you 😊 God bless 💙🙏❤️

A daily walk with Him in prayer and fasting. We know from His Word that He is aware of our situation. Matthew 10:30-31 Jesus speaking - "But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore..." If you have a problem that persists and you are faithfully praying and fasting, you should request prayer at church and/or go to your pastor with the problem. There are also prayer networks available that you can contact. Sorry that I can't think of their names at this time. Even so, I will pray for you that God will touch you if you are in crisis.

Thank You!......... As I recall......... It was a few 'spiritually hungry' outcasts who decided to meet together for prayer and fasting on Azuza St that started this whole neo-Pentecostal, neo-Apostolic, neo-Holiness movement.......The results speak for themselves. Many years ago, prayer and fasting most likely helped prepare me to receive the Holy Ghost....... No doubt you're 'onto something' with this prayer/fasting stuff. Maybe even add some sincere repentance in sackcloth and ashes for some extra humility........ (instead of the vain immodest worldly business suits and clean-shaven faces the UPCI is so addicted to). The more you control your flesh........... the less your flesh controls you.

Dude, repentance with sackcloth and ashes was what the pharisees were doing, and what the pharisees were doing was getting attention. N Jesus said when they do that, they’ve gotten their reward already(the attention from man). Also, the UPCI doesnt wear suits when they fast. They can be in normal living clothes and still fast.

There is no way you think wearing literal sackcloth and ashes to church is a better idea than suits. We wear that clothing in order to be set apart from the world and give an outward display of reverence towards the sanctuary and the things of God. I believe that it would be a worse thing to show up to the house of the king wearing informal, casual attire. Our attire reflects our attitude towards the house of God and we are showing respect towards holy things in the way that we dress.
