Bible Study in Depth: Books you need in your library

We live in a 21st century world, with a 21st century worldview.
To understand what was going on in the time, place, culture and words of people we see in our Bible, we need extra resources!
The massive gap since scripture was written has left a divide in our understanding of the geography, culture, literacy and language of the time.
This distances us from the full understanding we can have of the meaning of the texts of our Bibles.
In this video I list the books you'll want on your shelf for a life time of in depth bible study.

A simple, printed list of titles in the description of a video like this is enough to please me. It is such a useful tool and encourages viewers to delve deeper into the recommended books (or audio or movies, documentaries, etc.). You have provided a list of titles plus subject matter, plus links to vendors. Much respect. This means viewers can have confidence in your recommendations as they don't have to simply take your word for it.

You should do a course on the Bible from start to finish all the history and everything in a very educational based way. I have always wanted to learn the Bible more but tbh the courses I have found the teachers are sooo boring I just fall asleep. You have great energy in your videos. I'd 100% pay for your course to learn what you know on the Bible.

Hey Darry, thank you for putting this together. I haven't heard of any of those books so I will look forward to adding them to my library. Currently, I have the ESV Study Bible with "The Literary Structure of the Old Testament by David A. Dorsey." I really love it. I also do have the NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible, The Moody Bible Commentary, The Bible Among The Myths by John N. Oswalt, and some of the books from The Lost World series by John H. Walton.

So glad to have found this channel. I use an Illustrated Bible Dictionary and two HCSB study Bibles, one of which is their Apologetics Study Bible. But I must admit I also sometimes consult The Living Bible and, less frequently, The Message. Also The MacArthur Bible Commentary, but while helpful I find it only helpful sometimes. I think I'll add one of the Atlases you've suggested.

The Sacred Bridge (Carta’s Bible Atlas) is my choice of atlas, but it gets overwhelming. Luke T. Johnson, The Writings of the New Testament, and LaSor, Bush and Hubbard, Old Testament Survey, are the two biblical contents books that I have found most helpful.

When teaching from the Hebrew Scriptures, in addition to House, I like to consult 'What the Old Testament Authors Really Cared About: A Survey of Jesus' Bible' and 'Dominion and Dynasty'. These books help in understanding the background, main ideas, and interconnectedness of the Hebrew Bible. Read each with discernment, as I think sometimes Dempster's conclusions in 'Dominion and Dynasty' add "types" and "shadows" which go beyond the author's intent at times.

    * The King in His Beauty by Tom Schreiner. A good biblical theology of the entire Bible at an introductory level. Of course, Schreiner isn't an OT biblical scholar, and The King in His Beauty isn't as academic as his NT Theology, but nevertheless I think The King in His Beauty is a good book for a layperson (like me). Perhaps Schreiner's book Paul, Apostle of God's Glory in Christ should be noted as well. * An Old Testament Theology by Bruce Waltke. However, the House book mentioned in the video is likewise excellent.

Of course, the Holy Spirit gives us also knowledge about God and the relationship to Him outside of reading and hearing sermons. But why not use those "helpers"? But now that the churchage has ended, and God has loosed satan, (2ndThesalonions 2:2-12) and judgement has begun, (1stPeter 4:17), because we see the antichrist is there,(Matthew 24:15). FYI : The KJV is the pure word of God in the English language, so if you speak and read English you can open your KJV, sit down, then pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance. How can I be so confident that what I just typed is true? Because I believe that the God of the Holy Scriptures is the God of all truth. And the God of all truth keeps His promises. //////////////////////////////////// For example : Psalms 12 :6-7 states, "The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever."////////////////////////And Proverbs 30 : 5 - 6 states, "Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.///////////////////////////////And Jesus said, "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away."///////////////////And it is written in Deuteronomy 8:3..."And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live."//////////////////////////2 Peter 1:19-21 states, "We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost."//////////////// So it's comforting to know that the God of the Holy Scriptures who promises to preserve His pure words (those same words which are settled in heaven!) for all generations, is the same God that promises to preserve my soul, and every soul that places their trust (place their faith : being fully persuaded that God will perform His promises) in Him, for ever!! Therefore thou English speaking/reading believer, you don't need to waste your time learning another language, you can already read the pure, inerrant, infallible, precious word of God every time you open up a KJV!! It's so refreshing once one comes to the truth that we can take God at His word!! The Holy Scriptures are the only writings that are all truth. I'm not saying "Don't read anything else", I'm saying, and more importantly the Holy Scriptures are saying that only God's word is pure, and His truth, inspired and preserved are the only thing that anyone NEEDS to read.

Due to the lack of instructions in the Bible that would direct us to study the uninspired volumes of man such as commentaries etc. in order to understand the inspired words of God, I would say follow the directions listed in the 119th Psalm for simple understanding. It's repeated at least a dozen times in that chapter alone. Additionally, there are no instructions in our English Bible that tell us to learn Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic or any other foreign language so that we can understand our own Bible in English. Why do we need to depend on Biblical linguists to tell us what our Bible says? Many of them are not even saved. I say abandon the rampant scholarism in this so-called modern age and follow the Bible's own directions for clarity.

@@DefensoresdelaFe . See when the Holy Spirit speaks I listen. Just because some one has the Holy Spirit does it mean the holy spirit's going to teach you what's in the Bible. Because they cannot find their name in the history book and they claim it for themselves and their faith. So they need their own faith by hearing the voice of Jesus Christ. I don't want them in a Bible book.

James Z. : Wrong. Jesus goes on to say (continuing on in the very same passage) : "I receive not honour from men. But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only? Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?"......Jesus also states, "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.".....2 Peter 1:19-21 states, "We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost."......Paul writes under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit : "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

Genesis 14:13..."And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew..."/////Abram was well before the tribes of Israel ever came to be. He was not an Israelite. So, how was this Hebrew sinner able to obtain the free gift of salvation? Let's see : Galatians 3:6-9...King James Version..."Even as Abraham BELIEVED God, and it was accounted to him FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS. Know ye therefore that they which are OF FAITH, THE SAME ARE the children of Abraham. And the scripture, FORSEEING that God would justify the heathen THROUGH FAITH, preached before THE GOSPEL (NOT "a gospel", because there is only one gospel) UNTO ABRAHAM, saying, 'In thee shall all nations be blessed.' So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham."......Therefore, according to the Holy Scriptures, "culture'' has no bearing on how one gets saved, because God is not a respecter of person!! Just read the Book of Ruth. It's a heart issue...it always was a heart issue...it will always be a heart issue...Romans 2:28-29 reads : "For he is NOT a Jew, which is one outwardly; NEITHER is that circumcision, which is OUTWARD IN THE FLESH: But he IS a Jew, which is one INWARDLY; and CIRCUMCISION IS THAT OF THE HEART, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God."

Daryl in his bias omits a book that contains almost everything he was looking for. You can tell he has never looked at the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Correct. I have not. But why is this relevant here? Perhaps a suggestion would be more helpful than casting aspersions on my character? I don't think I've done anything to offend you, but if I have, please let me know so I can resolve it!

@@bma maybe if you’re actually read it you’d realize that your recommendations were nowhere near as biblically based. You really can’t see that your mentors used bad translations in their bibles: misinterpreting participles as non participle forms and worse imperatives. Maybe if you did show a preference for eccentric books over those that show how we believe from the earliest creeds, how we become more alive in Christ in the sacraments (if you don’t understand sacraments, you don’t understand the Hebrew and Greco-Roman background of how faith is reinforced even in the monetary world of the time, how the commandments are fulfilled by love, and how the epitome and summary of the gospel become faithfulness’s law in the prayer’s law. Instead of casting aspersions from the failings of Calvin, you refuse to do what Matthew’s gospel explicitly enjoins at 18:17

The bible is a book written by men who never even met the people they wrote about (many many years after). It is also heavily edited by a church that had a power and politics agenda, eliminating a number of chapters. In addition, there isn't just one Christian bible - there are at least three with different numbers of chapters. There exists no provable, fact-based evidence to support any of the supernatural (spiritual) events in it. Thus, it is pure human belief - a human emotion and dependent on as many human thoughts as there are humans. To believe without factual evidence is like saying a court case should be determined by only hearsay or a feeling. It's hard to think God wouldn't hold humans to a standard that they hold themselves.

What part did you all miss about YeHoVaH Yeshua (Zechariah 14:9) telling us that we OBEYED HIM IN THE LITTLE INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT HIS WORDS THAT WE WOULD GET HIM DWELLING IN US AND LEADING AND GUIDING US INTO ALL HIS TRUTH? FOR HE IS TRUTH AND HIS WORD IS TRUTH. But just as JOEL 3:6 and 2Corinthians 11: , and Jude 1:4 tells us WE HAVE BEEN LIED TO BY LUCIFER THE DRAGON. Isaiah 14:10-14, Leviticus 17:7, Proverbs 3:, 5:, 7:, 9:, The Revelation of Yeshua HaMaschiach 6:2 & 13:. Are you all ABLE to UNDERSTAND?? Or are you that DAMNED DECEIVED. "THAT THEY ALL MIGHT BE DAMNED WHO LOVED NOT MY TRUTH." JEREMIAH 6:16-19, ZECHARIAH 7:12, DEUTERONOMY 28. Fools!
