Biathlon Rifle Anatomy

Many Americans have shot a gun in their lifetime, but not many have had the opportunity to shoot a biathlon rifle. Because of this many people are often interested to hear more about the rifle I use on almost a daily basis. This video takes a closer look at some of the things that make a biathlon rifle unique

That shooter on the line looked like he wasn't at all pleased with the cameraman.

Really cool that it uses ball-bearings to lock the bolt.

Now imagine how much harder this Sport would be if Competitors had to source their own ammo right now lol. But great, informative video as there is very little information on modern Biathlon Rifles. Such an ingenious design on the Anschutz action with the ball bearing locking lugs.

Paul, thanks this was actually quite interesting. Quick question, have you ever tried a biathlon rifle from the pre 1978 days when large bore was used with a 150 meter target? I was just wondering if you found one easier or harder to shoot. Keep up the fun, and informative videos.

I have not tried a biathlon rifle from the pre-1978 era. I have shot large bore rifles which is a very different experience than shooting the current .22LR biathlon rifle. Today's rifles are much lighter and have almost no recoil compared to a large centerfire rifle. However, due to the .22LR ammo having to be subsonic the wind will affect the trajectory of the bullet more than a large bore rifle.

great video. do you all ski with them loaded? I assume not, but cant tell how they are loaded/unloaded (made safe) from watching the Olympics.

They ski unloaded. When they arrive at the range and enter a firing position they secure a 5-round clip that is suited on the rifle stock and insert it into the magazine well.

They are unloaded. The mag you just used on the range, have to be empty when you leave the range. If not, a DSQ and a possible suspention will follow.

Can you tell me where you get the cuff that attaches to your arm? I would like to get one and make a sling for a rimfire PRS rifle.

Generally we shoot Lapua ammo, specifically Polar in the winter. During the summer training season we just shoot Standard Plus which is a cheaper ammo that is sufficient for training.

Lapua is generally considered best with the polar and extreme x being highly sought after . However most teams in Alaska are using cci standard target rounds (40 grain lead etc.) and some are using federal target rounds. I also seem to think that a lot of people us SK or Tenex biathlon or even fiocchi.
