Is it better to become a specialist or a generalist? This debate is central to career development. A powerful approach to developing your skill set is to become a "combo specialist." What do I mean by combo specialist? Let's use McDonald's as a metaphor. The burger is the first specialty. Adding French fries provides a second expertise, and the cold drink is the third specialty.
In today's volatile world, it's crucial to have multiple career paths due to the turbulence, uncertainty, and changes we face. Thus, instead of choosing between being a generalist or a specialist, becoming a combo specialist is the optimal path. This approach not only ensures safety but also fosters growth, survival, and success in a challenging environment.
Back in 2014, my primary specialty was in marketing and sales processes. My secondary specialty was in medicine, and my tertiary specialty was in teaching. Today, my main specialty is coaching and teaching, with secondary expertise in social media, and tertiary expertise in technology management. Having three specialties offers me a plethora of options, enabling me to choose my career path instead of being constrained by it.
In 2013 and 2014, I worked at Roche Pharmaceuticals, a Switzerland-based company, while also teaching marketing and strategic management at a business school. This dual role enriched my knowledge in both teaching and business management. As they say, the best way to learn is to teach. Teaching not only deepens my understanding but also allows me to reflect on and convey concepts effectively.
Today, teaching and coaching are my specialties. What are your main specialties? Do you have secondary careers?
The concept of a combo specialist is from the book "Small Actions" by Eric Sim. I discovered his video on TikTok and read his book yesterday. He highlights the importance of having multiple areas of expertise within your primary domain. Eric Sim is a renowned public speaker with a background in engineering, finance, and language. He initially majored in engineering, then moved into finance, and also mastered Chinese.
In his book "Small Actions," Eric Sim provides numerous examples illustrating the importance of leveraging technology. He emphasizes that everyone should manage their funds wisely, suggesting a strategy of allocating a portion of your earnings to build financial independence and develop management skills.
Additionally, leveraging technology, especially AI, is crucial today for increasing productivity and profit. Understanding social media's unique cultures is essential for effective communication. For example, LinkedIn content differs from Facebook content, which is different from Instagram. Creating native content for each platform is key to success.
Eric Sim advocates taking small steps towards big goals. Whether starting a blog or training for a marathon, beginning with manageable tasks sets you on the path to success. His book offers valuable insights for career development and entrepreneurship, even while working in a company.
I highly recommend reading "Small Actions" for its practical advice on career growth and business development.
