Bharath Stores (Kannada: ಭಾರತ್ ಸ್ಟೋರ್ಸ್) is a 2012 Indian Kannada film directed by P. Sheshadri, starring Sudharani, H. G. Dattatreya, Chi Guru Dutt, V. Manohar and others.[1] The film deals with issue of Foreign direct investment (FDI) in Indian retail industry, and the impact of introduction of multi brand retail outlets on small retailers.
Bharathi has come to Bengaluru after nine years with her husband, Sharath. She had promised her father that she would repay his dues to Mr Govinda Shetty. Only then did her father die in peace. Mr Govinda Shetty inherited the small grocery shop, "Bharath Stores" and was carrying on the family business with pride and such elan that the bus stop in front was named after it as "Bharath stores stop" After alighting near that stop, she was surprised to find no trace of it anywhere there. The queries to that effect went in vain.
Now the frantic search begins. By the fruition of a dedicated search, she meets Chandru and Manjunath, who had worked in that shop. Chandru tells her how he learnt along with the tricks of the trade, to be humane from him. Manjunath tells her, he stayed in the shop till the end until Shetty was hospitalized. He brings her to the old age home. Bharathi finds Shetty there gazing at nothing, having stopped speaking for months and unable to react to her.
Guess the reason behind Shetty’s present status?
Certainly not the events in his life, like Balaji, his son showing contempt to the family business, his love marriage nor his leaving the house for ever. Shetty showed his strong willpower at such situations.
Globalisation, liberalisation and industrialissation brought the countries nearer. It is a couple of decades India also accepted these, resulting in the gradual change in the lifestyle. Malls and marts popped up. New ethics and style of business were adapted. Curious clientele gradually were being attracted to the mall culture. Repercussion was the deteriorating retail, small and box shops. Govinda Shetty too was a victim of the tsunami of this dangerous evolution. It is the status of lakhs and lakhs of those like him.
Bharathi’s search unfolds the cruel reality of the invasion of mall culture. Many a gigantic question, appear and disturb us.

Actually its a true story. Filmed in hanumantha nagar (basavanagudi). The shop name changed as bharath stores its actually nirmala stores. Namdu provision stores ittu opposite to nirmala stores. My father and the owner of the nirmal stores are best friends. Very good movie. Super dattana.

Guys, don't worry. Nirmala stores family is well settled. One of their family member used to be my colleague. That being said, feel very sorry for the kirani angadis who were largely affected. Personally I hate malls. Very rarely go there.

When i watched this movie, i remembered my childhood. Even i am from a shetty family. At hard times, moral support from Family members and friends are very much required. There are lot of retail shops who are suffering from lack of business even today. Finally a heart touching movie, thanks for bringing reality on to the screen.

There is lot of old memories and attachments from old provisions stores....my father monthly took me to his friends ration shop and we used to buy monthly ration.from one shop now times changed we buy rice from one shop and almost other things we but in malls..only small items like child snaks we buy in local stores we should support the local business shops

The best realistic movie and credit goes to producers, director and the entire team, though Dattanna, Sudha Mam and other shopkeepers also done fabulous job. Dr.Annavaru sentence- mutthinanth mathu- navuu kalakke anugunavagi hondanike agadidre, kaal nammannu kallalli haki tuliyatte, idaralli yaru Tappu, yaru sari annodannu vaad madidaru yenu prayojan illa.

ಅಂತರಾತ್ಮವನ್ನು ಕಲಕಿದ ಕಥೆ. ಎಲ್ಲರ ನಟನೆಯೂ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ. ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆ ಖರ್ಚು ಕಳೆದಮೇಲೆ ಉಳಿದ ಹಣ ಯಾರಿಗೆ ಸೇರಬೇಕು? ನನ್ನ ವೋಟು ವಂಶದಕುಡಿಯನ್ನು ಕಷ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಸೊಸೆಗೆ.

This is Avery nice movie! Got tears after watching it.This shows how the life goes on .But feels sorry for the small stores, big shots don't realize that their existence is because of them generations after generations.Even in US in most of the small towns don't let the Giant chain stores come into their town . Good acting if the shetty and all the people who acted in this movie.

@Nagaraja Char I am from Hanumanth Nagar of old bangalore. I have grown seeing this stores in my area. This movie is based on the real life story of shutting down of Nirmala stores of Hanumanth Nagar. Still we call that stop of Nirmala stores only thought a marvadi wala has a new business running there who are occupying all majority business in Bangalore. But also the sad part is jio, Amazon, Flipkart any e commerce platform has made very hard for such kirana walas..if u hv any thoughts abt this do msg me let's try to help India not get into this trap. 9164232686
