To the very small but very vocal group of viewers who aren't in to this whole "Behind the Glass With a Glass" video series: Just keep on walking, because guess what, HERE'S ANOTHER ONE. And plenty more to come.
To everyone who gave the first episode a thumbs up and left comments: THANK YOU! I'm really glad to see this idea was received so well amongst you all. You've thoroughly motivated me to continue onwards and upwards with more videos.
In this episode, I'll show you what makes my ridiculously expensive tripod so ridiculously expensive. $1,800 for a tripod may sound outrageous - I'll give you that - but the quality of materials and the serviceability of this tripod make it worth every penny for me. And yeah, I know, tripods aren't exactly exciting stuff, but I'll be damned if it ain't my most important piece of equipment when it comes to architectural photography and using my large format cameras. Without it, I might as well not have a lens, a battery, or a memory card.
As I take you through the exciting, riveting, endlessly interesting world of tripods, I'll be enjoying an ice cold Weihenstephaner hefeweizen beer. It's from the oldest brewery in the world, it's my favorite hefeweizen beer of all time, and for this American, it's very difficult to pronounce. But hey, I'll try my best.
Here's a list of the gear discussed in the video:
- Systematic Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs - Extra Long. Model GT3543XLS (Buy: bhpho.to/2BncgGH)
- Really Right Stuff BH-55LR tripod head with panning clamp (Buy: bhpho.to/2nPeCVq)
- Really Right Stuff L-Plate for Canon EOS 6D (Buy: bhpho.to/2Boa2ab)
- Really Right Stuff 6-inch rail (Buy: bhpho.to/2MxIlQC)
If you have any questions about photography - beginner, advanced, whatever - or the business of photography or even just random questions about me, submit them to BGWG {at} nickcarverphoto {dot} com.
Always drink responsibly and don't overdo it.
Thanks for watching! Cheers!

    @@nickcarverphoto Your pronunciation is pretty good but the waiters weren't that wrong! An explanation of the need for a special glass: The Weißbierglas or Weizenglas as it is called in German has a special shape, that helps the beer staying fresh for a longer time and avoids accidents with drinking. It is possible that the carbon dioxide in the beer makes it froth in your mouth, if you are not careful, so that the beer sprays out of your nose while drinking from the bottle :-D

    I’m not sure which I’m most impressed with, the review of the beer or the one on the tripod. Great to see a review that isn't just a "I bought it because it's the best" full stop. You broke it down into the parts and what each part brings to your work and why you chose it. Very informative indeed. Now, that’s the beer out of the way, about your review on the tripod...

    Most of us also pronounce the "s" in "stephaner" like the sh in "shock" rather than the st in "stand". Lots of Americans doesn't get this quite right - you do :) I really love your sense of humour besides, not only here but in a lot of your videos. Your work is really interesting and especially the printing episodes really helped me!

    I have the 5 series 6 section, which is rock solid in fast water or surf and it extends to 2.8 mtrs high. It's an awesome tripod and easy to strip and clean. I also have the bowl levelling head which makes it super quick to get level.

  • @haiderabbas96
    @haiderabbas965 жыл бұрын

    Hi Nick, did you consider RRS TA-3 leveling base to go underneath the BH55 to level the base, I think it's much better than having panning clamp on top of the ball-head. The reason why is, the panning clamp only works if you are 100% level, but if your camera is a bit tilted up or down, then panning on the clamp would not be a good idea. With TA-3 or any other leveling base you always pan on the base of the ball-head. It's very handy for landscapes specially.

    Nick, you're correct about the Gitzos being very maintainable. After maybe 10 years (or slightly less), I finally replaced the plastic leg locks on my GT 2540. This thing has been in fresh water, salt water, sand storms, and everything else nature can throw at it and keeps on ticking. I did go larger for my Shen Hao 617 and went with an RRS TVC-33 with a BH55 head...so far, so good. Yeah, you pay for it, but quality isn't cheap.

The Weihenstephaner Brewery is about 8 to 10 miles away from where I live and the "Hefe-Weissbier" is my alltime-favorite also. It's so interesting if an american describes one of the best german beers. I enjoyed watching it. AND don't care about your pronouncing, everyone should understand what you mean and want. I appreciate it, that you even tried it to pronounce it. So, greetings from near Freising, Germany. Keep it going, take care and all the best. Philipp

    My wife speaks German NIck and says you’re as right as you could possibly be ;-) I am on the hunt for Weihenstephaner beer. Going to Tip Top meats in Carlsbad to see if I can find it, as German as you can get around here. Gitzo makes a life long tripod, mine is a bit shorter in the legs and the BH55 ballhead is a beast. Don’t ever see a need for anything else. Great video Nick, one of the very few that makes me laugh. How could a video review of a tripod be any better!!!

    Great beer and one of my favorites, but such a nice beer like this deserves a glass. This was the beer that piqued my interest (and soon to be passion) in beer. I was in Germany in 1999. I built my tripod on the same Gitzo legs. I added a Manfrotto MVH-500AH fluid head instead of a ball head. I liked ball heads until I tried the fluid head. What an improvement in movement it makes. I now don't have to worry about a heavy camera with telephoto lens flopping forward if I accidentally let it go before locking it down. it also works quite well when doing multiple exposure panoramic images with my Nikon D850.

    Definitely see the reasoning for your choice of tripod. As you point out it's a lifetime investment so over the years it will pay for itself. Curious that you have the RRS head (fantastic head which I own too) but not their tripod? Any reason why the Gitzo over RRS? BTW I love this concept of a talk over a whiskey or beer.

    Another great video. Thanks for the insight! On the German pronunciation thing... A guy I went to high school with, a long time ago..when the Earth was green..., failed his HS German course. Even though, both of his parents immigrated to the US and German was the only language spoken in his household growing up. It seems that the German dialect (something like 20 of them) he had spoken since he first learned to speak, was a different dialect than what they were teaching in his HS class. Kind of like the "Spanish" that is taught in school today is more Mexican than Spanish. The languages are similar, but not entirely the same.

    I live in the city where Weihenstephaner is produced. To be honest we don‘t even drink it that much. If you‘re looking for the best Weissbier, try getting a hold of Huber Weisses. Another tip for that type of beer is try drinking it out of a glass. The beverage contains sediment that falls to the bottom over time, to enjoy the whole drink it should be poured into a glass. Of course there is a specific technique to pour a Weissbier ( Its Germany ). I dont wish to criticize, only to spread some help from one beer connoisseur to another. Love the channel already, keep up the great work!

    I'm not a professional photographer, so I have no need of a $1,000+ tripod, but I overstand pro's needing equipment that they can count on. Interestingly, I was on the B&H site a few weeks ago, and was surprised by the number of negative reviews RE: Gitzo tripods. According to what I read, Gitzo was recently bought by another company (I want to say Manfrotto, but I'm not sure), and that since then, their customer service has gone downhill significantly. I'm ALL for paying for quality, it just seems that so many things nowadays do not offer the quality and/or customer service that you'd expect, given their price point. Ironically, I have been very disappointed in some premium products I have owned (a car immediately comes to mind) and highly satisfied by some budget items I own. I like nice watches, and while I've never had a problem with any of them, I have a couple of 10+ year old Timex's that I cannot kill.

    Awesome Hefe, definitely in the tops. But before you declare a favorite, I recommend you try Schneider Weiss Tap 7 and Ayinger Brauweisse among others. Also of note, is the limited edition collaboration Hefe between Weihenstephaner and Sierra Nevada, Braupakt, absolutely delicious! I wish somehow, they won’t stop producing it. If you like the Weihenstephaner Hefe, check this one out also. All of these are among the top wheats in the world, without a doubt.

    German is my second language and you are pronouncing it correctly. "W" in German is pronounced as a "V" in American English. I have a similar System 3 tripod, but not extra long. Guten tag!

    I speak German. I can say it's definitely with the long "a" as the waiters mentioned. Additionaly, from you it sounds like "Wein" instead of "Weihen". So it's more "Wei"-"hen" where you here also the "h"

    Nick, be aware that RRS tripod head mounting plates are not the same size as Arca Swiss plates. The Arca Swiss are smaller and the RRS quick release head will not grip the Arca Swiss plate. The camera will end up hitting the floor. The RRS screw type heads will secure an Arca Swiss plate perfectly. An RRS quick release head cannot be adjusted and so RRS plates and brackets must be used. PIA !

    Hey Nick. originally German/Austrian, but been in the US for quite a while. Also a large format shooter. Just to settle the debate on how to pronounce the beer and the brewery....if you say the following words in sequence you pretty much have the pronunciation correct: vie-hen-steph-fawn-ur. Prost!!!

  • @nickcarverphoto

    @nickcarverphoto

    5 жыл бұрын

    And how about the emphasis? Is it on "steph" or "fawn"?

  • @renepirolt

    @renepirolt

    5 жыл бұрын

    If you pronounce each word separately and put equal emphasis on every vowel you are 90% there (in German you don’t string words and vowels together like in English or French, that is why it sounds so harsh) Then, to pronounce the adjective Weihenstephaner (meaning “of Weihenstephan”) you put the emphasis on the FAWN and eliminate the pause before the UR - so you would say: vie-hen-steph-FAWNur To pronounce the proper name Weihenstephan, you put the emphasis on STEPH and eliminate the pause before the FAWN - so it is: vie-hen-STEPHfawn Enjoy!!!

    Thanks Nick... Excellent presentation. I can relate to the cost factor on tripods & ballheads. I did extensive research on all things tripod & ballheads. The Gitzo line is top notch, BUT they are foreign made, China I think. RRS tripods are good, but not great as in being overpriced & under engineered with respect to what you are actually getting. I went with the ProMediaGear carbon fiber 42mm 58" 4 section legs. I wanted the 67's but they discontinued them, sadly. B&H knocked 10% off of the legs so I jumped on it. I Paid a tad more than yours cost. Once again, I avoided RRS on their best ballheads too. I went with the Acratech GP Lever lock arca swiss ballhead & so glad I did. RRS is a proprietary designed head meaning you have to buy their once again overpriced plates to ensure fit compatibility. RRS has NO safety backups on their ballheads, the BH40 & BH55 heads respectively. The Acratech GP Lever has (3) safety backups that ensure your equip. does not fall off the ballhead. It would be wise to invest in a HD rubber band for the BH55's lever to prevent it from unlocking, a shirt sleeve could do this. The Acratech allows for the use of any manufacturers arca swiss plates because of the adj. screw opposite the lever. I often walk along streams & ponds, small rivers, etc., I have to know with absolute certainty my gear stays clamped on when the tripod & camera is slung over my shoulder. The Acratech gives me that assurance, the RRS heads do not. Both the products I have illustrated here are Made In The USA. I spent in the neighborhood of $1400.00 for my setup, it ain't cheap. No doubt you will get many years of good service out of your setup and I wish you well with your architectural photography... Think I'll have a beer! Bill Farr @ WGF Studio53... :-)

    William Farr that's all interesting stuff to know about the acratech offerings. I really like their heads too but haven't used one extensively. I wonder if all the failsafes built in to the head would be frustrating to undo/work around when removing the camera, but I don't know exactly how they work.

    Interesting (missed that video), I got the same legs early 2019, and love them - no rrs head, but the quick release. These days (in Europe) you don’t get the giddies with Gitzo, they are now extra. Different subject, beer should be had in Germany and Böhmen. Especially white beer, and it does not have to be during Oktoberfest ;-)

    Nick that beeeer co. should pay you royalties, I haven't drunk any alcohol for 4 years, just don't like it but found myself thirsty and Its winter here... suave...and the totem pole. Which brings me to ask about the insulation foam [DIY, inner inch fitting specs etc ] , ~ how much a foam-gap do you have once you wrapped the foam around with tape..? I found the edges an inch apart after a tight wrap.Silly question actually, think I will have to hunt for thinner foam. my bad. “If the facts don‘t fit the theory, change the facts.” -Albert Einstein. Yea, it's a bit hard to explain, but once you have used a top of the range tripod and head, there is no way you can go back. Perhaps fortunately I hike with mine, so it is lighter, smaller and hence about 1/2 that price. I like your description of why you need a lever clamp. I guess I'm similar, but I never quite figured out how to describe it.
