Beyond glucose: A beta-cell centric approach to prevent type 2 diabetes

Ғылым және технология

Professor Yoshifumi Saisho’s research focuses on beta cell dysfunction in type 2 diabetes (T2DM). He advocates for moving the focus away from glucose levels and towards protecting pancreatic beta cell mass - the cells which produce insulin - to prevent patients from developing T2DM and to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Protecting the beta cells sounds perfect! How?

For healthy individuals, the best way to protect beta cells is to minimize beta cell workload/insulin spikes. We can do this by eating healthy, especially a low carbohydrate/sugar diet, preventing obesity, and exercising. For type 2 diabetes patients, the best way to protect beta cells (in addition to the above) is to use medications like "SGLT2 inhibitors" and "GLP1 Receptor Agonists", which decrease blood sugar but also protect beta cells through other mechanisms. This is still an active but promising area of investigation.

Carbohidrates will call for insuline, which makes your pancreas work. Protect the beta cells by reducing the amount of carbohidrates on your diet.

@@rustycage55 bs low carb studies already show saturated can damage Beta cells. How long have u been on low carb diet? was u diabetic before u went low carb? I challenge u to have an ultrasound for your liver to see there are any fat built up in your liver preparing you for fatty liver disease and insulin resistance and ultimately t2 diabetes 🐥

@@lenguyenngoc479it’s definitely possible to have to much saturated fat, that said. You don’t need to consumer fat to cause a fatty liver and vespers’s fat. You could consume zero fat for years and gain the problem from ether alcohol or refined sugar. Also there is issues with a number of different prolonged consumption of certain toxins which over time create the problem esp in conjunction together.
