I wonder if there is a way to set smoothness to zero by default under some preference tab. This would make it easier in the sense this would be used more often and you don't have to worry about changing it.

Ok so I've been using Photoshop for the past 4 years, I never discovered this channel until the last few months. I desperately tried to search up tutorials to learn Photoshop. I actually had realized this, when I was applying the random gradient map as you showed on a previous video when I tried since I reactivated my adobe, it didn't give a great result and I played with the smoothness button and this is when I realize that it used to not be defaulted like this before. But it's great that you explained it, cause sometimes when photoshop made the update , it's confusing to adjust and know what to do when things don't work the same.

It's not faulty, it's just that it is very exact. The reason the gradient changed is because you started a few pixels away from the very edge of your artboard and the absolute black is dragged a little bit inwards. You have to be very precise so it won't change. The reason the image (the girl with the beanie) changed is simplier, the original photo's black is not absolute black, it's dark gray, same for white, gray, almost white. You have to check the darkest and brightest points on your images to have the best results. Photos rarely contain absolute black or absolute white.

I use a black-and-white gradient all the time to add contrast instead of a traditional curve layer. Then, I adjust the opacity slider to set the amount. If it's a color image I change the blending mode from normal to luminosity to bring back the color.

In addition to putting the Smoothing control at 0 (Gradient Editor), try changing the "Method" drop down from "Pereptual" to "Classic" (Gradcient Properties). I find that gives a better B&W starting point. Alternately, try "Linear" in the Method drop down (Properties) and different Smoothing settings (Editor).
