PROGRAM LIBERATION CONCERT 75 + 1 YEAR
The liberation of the Netherlands in 1945
1. Prelude ‘Now thank we all our God’
- Harm Hoeve
When the coast was clear on the day of the liberation in Zutphen, the blind organist Cornelis Bute could no longer hold back. He climbed the organ stairs and with full organ het started the song “Now thank we all our God’. Festive organ tones rippled
across the center through the broken church windows. Outside people were listening outside in touch.
2. Meditation on “Give Your Fate Into Your Father's Hand”
- Franz Schubert; arr. Harm Hoeve
This song meant a lot to Heleen Kuipers-Rietberg, one of the great women of the resistance. Together with Frits de Zwerver, she founded the National Organization for Aid to People in Hiding. She died on December 27, 1944 in Ravensbrück concentration camp.
3. Fantasy "The Sound of Music"
- Richard Rodgers; arr. Harm Hoeve
Music from America; the land of one of our liberators. The story of the von Trapp family who flee from occupied Austria to free Switzerland.
4. Hornpipe Humoresque
- Noel Rawsthorne
For our English liberators. English melodies with a witticism to Bach, Vivaldi and Widor.
5. Fantasy about Psalm 43 verses 1 and 4
- Harm Hoeve
Psalm 43 is sometimes called the ‘Resistance Psalm of Dordt’. On March 13, 1941, 18 men were executed on the Waalsdorpvlakte. One of them, the Reformed teacher Leendert Keesmaat, started Psalm 43 verses 1 and 4 on the way to the execution.
6. Paraphrase about the Israeli National Anthem ‘Hatikwah’
- arr. Harm Hoeve
‘Hatikwah’ is about the Jewish people's hope of returning to Israel. On the internet you can find a BBC recording where this song is sung in an impressive way by the Jews in concentration camp Bergen-Belsen when they were liberated by the Americans.
7. Prelude en forme de marche
- Denis Bédard
For our Canadian liberators A delighted sounding march by a composer from Canada
8. Highland Cathedral
- Ulrich Roever and Michael Korb
For our Scottish liberators. A typical Scottish melody. It was written in 1982 by two Germans.
9. Prelude opus 28, No. 20
- Fréderic Chopin
For our Polish liberators Commander of the Polish Armed Forces, Sosabowski was posthumously rehabilitated in 2006. The Poles were accused by the English of the failure of the Battle of Arnhem in 1944. In reality they fought bravely. The Poles were unable to return to their
homeland after the war. That was already occupied by the Russians. Sosabowski was made a scapegoat and ended his life as a factory worker in England. Feelings of division can be heard in this composition by the Polish composer Chopin.
10. The Polish National Anthem ‘Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła’
(Poland is not lost yet)
For our Polish liberators
11. Aria ‘Happy is the land that God the Lord protects’
- Jan Zwart
This song is from the collection ‘Valerius Sound of Remembrance’. Andriaan Valerius collected these songs during the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648). In World War II these songs were again an inspiration for the resistance fighters.
12. Fantasy about the Dutch national anthem ‘Het Wilhelmus’
with the prayer from Psalm 134 ‘The LORD now bless you from above’.
- Jan Zwart
