Better Than The Volkswagen Golf? (Peugeot 308 2023 Review)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We drive the 2023 Peugeot 308 hatchback, which cops a significant price increase in return for a more logical interior and excellent driving dynamics.
Peugeot is not giving up on small cars in Australia. It’s bringing back its 308, now in third-generation form, with both 308 hatchback and 308 SW station wagon body styles. The main engine is a 1.2T three-cylinder but there will also be a 1.6T four-cylinder plug-in hybrid model coming in 2023.
The Peugeot 308 competes against the Volkswagen Golf, Mazda 3 and Hyundai i30, but Peugeot would also like it to be seen as a rival to the BMW 1 Series, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Audi A3.
As always, we don’t accept advertising from car manufacturers, and we’re powered by Budget Direct - so this is an independent, honest review of the Peugeot 308.

I find it crazy that so many Australians and Brits still don't get that Peugeot has really levelled up big time since 2012-2014. Now they are on same level as VW. It takes intellectual honesty to admit it. It seems that so many of you are stuck in the past. Peugeot nowadays is a mid premium car maker. About the price, those who complain need to get that ALL car manufacturers are increasing prices. Wait to see Audi or VW prices for 2023, I can assure you that you'll be crying. Peugeot offers fantastic value for money. Same quality than German cars for 10.000 or 20.000 less. Do the math. And this comment comes from a German car engineer.

no, though I absolutely agree with what you say about Peugeot, is - seeing the material quality of VW ID.3 & Co - sadly slightly difficult to agree with. especially about the perceived quality levels... I wouldn't really agree about it, since practically all current models of ex PSA brands (including Opel) surpass what we can find in ID family (and even Golf) by "a mile"! especially by the DS, and Peugeot too.... while their reliability numbers are near one to each other for quite some time (at least a decade)! in fact ( I'm 56 years old), I owned and drove a bunch of PSA and VAG (mainstream and premium) cars, and I never considered (or experienced) Citroen and Peugeot as particularly inferior brands to VW! each of them had (and still have) its own "focus", strengths and weaknesses that consequently leveled them to the point where "personal taste and preference" basically becomes deciding factor. so, "looking down" on Peugeot as "unworthy brand" is a short sided "bar counter" logic...

I'm sorry but if it's VW quality and VW price, then there is almost no reason to buy the 308 over a Golf. Leaving everything else aside, the crazy depreciation alone should be enough for anyone to think twice about buying anything Stellantis.

@@waynezheng7629 hm... more or less everything depreciates as a falling rock... I owned Audi A4 B7 that, when I sold it after 4 years, lost over 50% of its value (and no, low mileage didn't help) and something rather similar happened with my previous gen. P508SW.... what if the reasoning should go "if it has similar or slightly better quality, similar reliability, similar price and similar depreciation, why wouldn't you buy the one you like better?

That matching green jacket is almost Olivene Green! This car has taken a while to get here but it seems it was worth it. I'm impressed by the light weight of this 308 which is a bigger car than the previous model. That interior looks gorgeous and it appears that the software is now well up to date. Apart from their sport GTI models (which now appear to be history in the petrol line) Peugeots have always been fantastic cruisers. I remember my old 504, 505 and 406 only had about 100 kw with no turbo, but lovely to drive. BTW, that blue paint job on the wagon is beautiful. Also, I believe that there is a fold down rear armrest on the hatch but not the wagon.

Going back to amazing, arguably best balanced in class, driving dynamics and icockpit was a game changer with 308 T9, a line that was once broken with terribly dull 307/308. Once you try the small precise steering wheel there's no going back, any other car will feel like a bus.

For the price, I think it should be at least a1600cc, turbo charged engine . Fuel consumption would still be acceptable. Remember the old power to weight ratio. As an example: Back in 1974, our Ford Falcon 6 cylinder sedan, was not as economical as the the 302 V8 Windsor engine, due to the fact that it's increase in power worked less to pull the same body weight around. So the same could be said of this Peugeot. 1200 cc against a 1600cc Turbo, Granted, there would be a slight increase in overall vehicle weight due to the larger engine, but I wouldn't think that'd add up to much in much higher petrol consumption, if any. A well appointed interior, good road presence, stunning green Olivene colour. Love how it reacts in sunlight. Excellent presentation, thanks for sharing...

Another strange omission is the lack of fold down armrest with cupholders in the rear. T9 308 had it, why not the new model!! Especially at this price!! I think its way overpriced now with this engine in it, it should be GTi performance for this money!!

Was the most impressive car I have ever driven and it was worth about 20% of the cost of the new model you reviewed. The interior and equipments are alway great for the money but the reliability of the engine, especially after ages, that can drive you nuts. After years maintaining and replacing parts, I learned quite a lot on how to fix a Peugeot via forums all over the world and do seeing they refining the design of parts when buying parts. I believe those engines should be pretty reliable now but I have already losing my trust in it and the price of spare parts could easily match the premium euro cars all even exceeded. The lack of hot hatch version make me feel like the brand has lost its sporty heritage. For this price, there are too much choices and if premium is the way to go, the branding is not there yet. And for all its great exterior looks, interior is just as bad as the previous 308. I am sure the 308 interiors works for no aussies. And just like Mazda is doing, flogging off an antiquated torsion beam rear axle. Not a decent multi-link rear like some of its competitors. Tom didn't Peugeot give the keys of the SW "Estate" Wagon to any journalist at the launch? Possibly a 308 Estate full EV or PHEV, might have some interest here. We shudda got the new 208. What save in the purchase price will come back to haunt you in the long term re. reliability after warranty, weird interiors which fall apart and corrosion.LDV, Kia/Hyundai, GWM all poorly assembled with not a hint of style. Ridiculous comment. I am German, been working in the car industry for 23 years , mainly for VW group, as an engineer, I think i am qualified enough to tell that Peugeot now is considered as mid premium in continental Europe, and moving fast to become an upmarket brand. They have dramatically levelled up since 2012-2014. Design is just absolutely stunning, interior very stylish and they offer better value for money than anything the German car makers do nowadays. It's time to understand that people change, companies and brands change as well and it's incredibly unfair to keep judging Peugeots based on what they were in the 90's, since they have improved so much. Time to stop living in the past. Come to Germany, Austria or Switzerland and you'll see Peugeots everywhere.

true, Peugeot is not (yet) premium for us here in europe too....but it's not that far off and its models in their top trims sure feel like it is (I should know since I have last gen 508, and I had a couple of A4 before it).... but the funny thing is that at things you "down under" consider premium, we here wouldn't give a second look! so, judging things by "the taste or preference" isn't really a measure of quality....

@@garnray8568 I also worked in the automotive industry, but not for 23 years (kudos to you), I’ve also been to Germany with work to fix a bunch of showstoppers. But I have also been in the market and bought new cars and you are really wrong when saying Peugeot offers better value for money than any German car, considering current prices. One simple example: the audi a4. You can get, for what Peugeot is asking, a very decent Audi A4. I am saying this because Audi offers discount packages and slashes the price, while Peugeot gives you a couple of grands discount and that’s that. So sorry, but Peugeot is not worth it. And if you’re so familiar with Peugeot, how come you don’t recommend Citroen or DS as premium cars since they’re the more upmarket brands in PSA? Citroen’s 30% more expensive in terms of parts and service, yet you tell me that a 308 is worth €50k? Really? Then how much should DS be worth? Which actually have outstanding styling and interior materials? €70k? You know what, at the end of the day it’s your right to do it so please, as a German, go ahead and buy the 308 at €50k while I as a foreigner will buy your Audi A4 fully loaded for the same amount 👍

@@mirkozlikovski9553 I agree and the 508 indeed has been a more upmarket model. But it’s miles apart from the 308…. And if you look at the used market, the 508 loses most of it’s value, you can pay €35-40k new and end up selling used for €8-12k…. While an equivalent A4 will go for €18-22k…. Great for the used buyer, I guess.
