Better Than Narnia | Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis

I firmly believe this should be as beloved as Narnia.

You’re welcome. I also really love that book. Lewis has other one-offs that are amazing, too. The Screwtape Letters is pretty powerful. I’m so glad you enjoyed it so much. 💚

Impossible to read that title without hearing Bruce Dickinson's voice in my head.

If you liked Out of the Silent Planet, you will love the remaining two books. That Hideous Strength is my favorite Science Fiction book ever and, in my opinion , the best dystopian novel that has been written, as it is the only one (that I've read anyway) that truly delves into the spiritual realities of such a world and explores how a society can get there in the first place. I'm saying all that as a Christbro though, so take my opinion for what it's worth. :)

Considering those were written during WW2 I’m sure he had a lot of life experience to influence and create a dystopian book. I honestly laughed at Christbro 😭. I appreciate you watching and leaving me encouragement to finish the trilogy.

Space Trilogy is my favorite by far. That Hideous Strength was an amazing finale to the series as well.

I remember this book from yonks ago! It was pretty good. I never noticed the Christian themes with Narnia or Perelandra but I did notice it with The Silent Planet.

That’s interesting, tbf I didn’t notice as a child, but I did when I reread Narnia as an adult.

I really appreciate you finding, and showing all the different covers this novel has had. I loved the art work on many of these. Sci-fi, nor religion are my interest. But you mentioned this book on your other channel, so I stopped by to hear more about it.

I thought this book was alright. It was good enough for me to start book #2. I rarely DNF a book. My thought process is that I've started it & I should finish it since I already invested however much time in it. But I got just about 1/2 way through with the second book, struggled for weeks & I finally admitted that I just wasn't enjoying it & I eventually gave up & moved onto something else. I could not force myself to finish this series no matter how hard I tried. I hope you enjoy the series more than I did!! EDIT: I may have enjoyed it more if I had grown up a fan of C. S. Lewis, maybe. I didn't read the Chronicles of Narnia until I was like 42!! I thought it was okay, but I didn't get to experience that nostalgia reading as a kid. Also, The Ransom trilogy is free on Audible with membership.

I'm interested to see how you get on with the second book, especially given how you talked about the last few chapters of the first one. I thought the first book was was very good, especially given the age of it, but struggled to finish the second book and decided not to bother with the third. It goes way into the religious side in Perelandra, which basically reads like a reworking of Genesis on an oceanic venus.

I do hope you read the other two books as well. I thought Perelandra was the best of the three. That Hideous Strength had a strange ending that I didn't really understand.

Growing up in a religious home, I read the Screwtape Letters. I don't agree with much of it now, but it was so well written. I love any book now that deals with letters. I may give this one a try.

The reason it's not more popular, IMO, is the proselytizing. It's extremely unsubtle and eventually drags the whole thing down. His prose is fine, his aim is propaganda. I have the same problem with his other, hugely popular, works.

All of his work is heavy handed in that regard, but maybe you’re right. Religion in fantasy does seem more forgivable than in science.

Some would call it “sharing his faith,” as opposed to “propaganda.” Depends upon one’s bias.
