    The mums panda is so big because it represents how much of herself she’s had to hide her entire life. In every woman, lies at least a part of them that they’ve been taught to squash, or ignore, to be more palatable in their own culture, or in society in general. When you go through puberty, for girls, this is when you start to realise how much the odds feel stacked against you. There’s so much pressure on young girls, especially teenage girls. To look, act and behave in certain ways. The mother daughter relationships in this movie highlight how it is a perpetual cycle, but with each generation comes a harder push to be more accepting of ones self.

    It’s funny because I don’t think they really got the STRONG metaphor for female puberty lol😆 Body changing, getting hairy, mood swings, noticing boys, turning RED, feeling the need to hide it and that it’s something to be embarrassed about. It’s about growing up, family, friends, and being yourself… but it’s also literally just about puberty haha

    yep, lots of good messages in this movie! puberty is a huge part of it, but it's also very strongly about generational trauma, as well as the other things you mentioned. i appreciate seeing men react to it and really *get* it, and i love how it normalizes all the common aspects that come with growing up. i think men can surely relate to this just as much as women. the specifics of what they go through may be slightly different, but overall much of it is the same lmao

    it’s very weird seeing how non ethnic ppl reaction to ethnic family dynamics cause you can really see the cultural differences such as seeing a “villian” in the story when most of us living as a minority can immediately detect the villain being generational trauma opposed to one singular person that (on surface level) affects the protagonist most which i personally find very interesting and appreciate seeing! the first thing i thought when one of them suggesting to just tell the mom no and that it’s her life was “nonononononononono”😭

    Yep, I feel like the common Western view of such movies like Turning Red or Coco is "This person is stopping the main character from pursuing their dreams or expressing themselves so they're the bad guy and the main character should just stand up for themselves". POC, however, will see the family dynamics and think "Oh, it's so sad that the cycle is like this. The main character should have freedom to follow their dreams, but they must also value family and community, and sacrifice when needed. The best ending is to find balance between the two while breaking the generational curse in the process."

    I also think it was partially because of the incident with her mom (Mei-Mei's grandma). Like she's been told all this time that letting the panda out would be dangerous/bad, and then the one time she snaps and lashes out she ends up injuring her mother. The guilt from that definitely added to/validated the things her mom told her, which probably fuelled her to keep repressing everything because "Remember what happened last time? Stay in control if you don't want it to happen again" (this is to represent the mom's inner monologue, I doubt the grandmother would use the injury against her like that) Mei-Mei probably could have been in a similar situation if she had attacked her mom or one of her friends instead of Tyler. Of course she felt bad, but Tyler was kind of a bully and she didn't like him that much to begin with. If she had hurt those people she really cared about she probably would have shut down immediately and ended up like her mom.

    32:00 she doesn’t speak up and it’s not hard to see why. Many first generation/minority girls get this, so much pressure on our shoulders and we must be perfect and represent our family. The boys in our family usually get more freedom, later curfews, can make mistakes. But girls need to obey, so when she finally stands up to her mom it’s a big deal. The mom wasn’t horrible, in the end she came around, this was definitely about generational trauma, like Encanto. I read some reviews that understood this, but so many called this movie “limiting” for centering around an Asian family and “unrelatable” for that reason and also focusing on female characters. I’m glad you guys enjoyed it!

A lot of parents also didn’t allow their children to watch it because it spoke about periods and showed pads. We moved from Sweden to the UK and it was really tough since there's that pressure of having to be the perfect representation of your culture and family bc most will be xenophobic so you have to disprove them. Plus the shame about our bodies and what happens during puberty for girls being seen as shameful, something to hide. I found how both films conveyed generational trauma so healing. If people found the film limiting and not fun bc of that then imho they are either racist, sexist or both.

    22:15 - if MeiMei would have honestly answered that question, the story would have taken a different turn. If her mom knew that she loves this band and it's a dream of her to go - she'd probably be permitted to go. But without knowing that MeiMei is a fan, this looks ridiculous from Mom's point of view. Her daughter wants to go to a concert, with music that she was not interested before (as far as mom knows) and it costs a lot of money. Plus I'm sure she would want an adult to chaperone 13 year old girls in a huge concert in a major city. That's another $200. And all of that because Mei wants to "broaden her music horizon"? For that money she can buy a stack of CDs and broaden horizons at home, safely.

  • @chronosclaimsall

    @chronosclaimsall

    I don't really think it would have made a difference. A likely reason that Mei-Mei lied in the first place is because something like this may have happened in the past, where her mom discounted or dismissed things that she likes because she doesn't like them herself or see them as good enough for her daughter to be interested in. And she said it herself. When Jin told her that maybe they could trust Mei-Mei to go to the concert, she said "It's them I don't trust. Look at those glittery delinquents". On top of the panda situation she just doesn't like them, thus she doesn't want to let Mei-Mei go see them.

    About Mei saying that after the concert they will all become women, in fact that does have an explanation. In my experience and that of many people I know, going to a concert by your favorite artist as a teenager DOES make you feel like you have more autonomy, i mean, you go to a place where there are only people with the same tastes as yours, you go with your friends and you are alone enjoying themselves (because most parents prefer to stay outside), where they play music that YOU like and obviously the boys who sing seem attractive to you... most of us have an "me" from before our first concert and a "me" after it, you feel more adult because since you could go to a concert on your own, your parents tend to give you more responsibilities and confidence.

    As a female, girls are so weird at this age. Idk about kids today but definitely in 2002, girls were definitely like this, including myself 😅🤦‍♀️ I like Ming, but she’s overbearing. I think she felt she was doing better than her mom, but as it turned out, she continued the cycle. It was heartbreaking to see how Ming would react to her mom or even in the scene when she was young and crying. You could see how much she cares about her mom and the pain it caused her knowing that she hurt her and knowing she did that to Mai. I feel terrible for Mai. Do many moments where you want to just tell her words of support and give her advice.

    I was about two months late for this movie because I avoided it because of the thumbnail on Disney Plus of the four of them doing a dance in the street. I thought this would be cringe city and I would hate it, but the premise of her turning into a Red Panda was so intriguing to me, I decided to give it a watch. I blew me away. I was just in awe of how an animated movie could speak to me so much and....WAS SOOOOOO DAMN GOOD!! The humour, the subtle visual jokes, the story, the writing......so f*****g good! That ending kills me every time. I just love this movie. Easily one of Pixar's best.

    I’m glad y’all enjoyed this, but at the beginning when I watched it, I was of the same mind as Zuff. When the mom took Mei Mei’s drawings to that boy, it legit made me angry at her. That was a seriously awful thing to do to a teen girl, and it made me dislike the mom so much that it took the movie down for me. I felt better at the end, but…yeah. I wish the mom hadn’t been *so* over the top overbearing at the beginning.

    I enjoyed your reactions. I like that you guys were empathetic towards Mei Mei and toward girls in general with some lf your comments. I understand the person on the left as I also felt really mad about Mei Mei's mom, at least until that scene where she was crying and I realized then that it's pointing out family cycles and how they affect generations (just like Encanto). I'm not condoning the way she treated Mei Mei (stalking her and being too over the top by reading and showing her private journal & drawings for example), but it helps to understand where the behaviour comes from. I feel that being in that spiritual place and receiving compassion from someone (both her daughter and mother) allowed her to heal at least a bit of that part of her that she internalized from her own mother. Once again I really enjoyed your reactions and thanks for sharing 😁
