Ours is a DIY van we converted 3 years ago, we had never had or rented a camper before, our design worked out fine. We've never experienced a cassette toilet in use, everyone we know never uses theirs except in emergencies/liquid only, and talks about the smell and awful emptying procedure.. We put in a decent separating toilet with external fan (uses minute amount of power, we have a good solar set up too) It never smells and we didn't install a separate bathroom, we built a bench seat around it that lifts up and shields when in use. Yes as a woman it takes some getting used to, but we have easily gone 2 weeks without needing to deal with solids. Once we had forgotten to switch the fan on and did notice a waft, realised our mistake and all good once the switch was flicked on.

That's one advantage of converting - at least you have full control of what you fit inside. Doing it right from the beginning is just brilliant.

Well, not my usual video subject matter to watch with my breakfast 💩🤣🤣......but super informative, thanks for the clear explanation of all the different varieties! I can see why you went with what you did, to give you that freedom from the cassette restrictions and to avoid the smelly job of emptying them. So pleased it worked out for you.👍 (ps..would love a video about your filming equipment, techniques you've mastered, and your KZread experience, as you seem to be doing so well, congrats!)

Thank you! We can definitely talk about KZread and filming one day. Although in this genre I'm not sure if we can say it's worth the effort. 😀 The little bit of ad revenue doesn't come close to cover the cost of equipment (and we use basic stuff), nevermind the time one has to put into it. But for now we still enjoy the process.

Really interesting topic and can be a bit of a headache even on a campsite in our caravan. Looking forward to our travels next year as we ordered a campervan recently. Had to get the cassette loo as my wife Jenny is useless with a shovel. Love the show as always. B&J.

And apparently people frown if you use a shovel in the parking lot 😁For retrofitting a cassette system you can look at the Arwinger products.

It all makes perfect sense to me, especially if you want to travel to more remote places as you do. To be honest, emptying a cassette has never bothered me, and having access to aires across Europe makes for a simple solution. Due to work commitments, we dont have the time to travel to such remote areas that may present disposal difficulties, but honestly, the most difficult place to find access to disposal points is here in the UK, where even public toilets are being closed all over the place. If you dont want to, or can't afford to stay on commercial campsites every few days then you are either going to work out how to minimise the use of your cassette, or find ways of getting to a toilet where you can properly dispose of the waste. This is where separating toilets would really come into there own, and are now being offered in some new motorhomes as an alternative to the standard cassette system, and I can see this as becoming far more common. I guess we'll still be talking toilets long into the future. 👋

It's a step in the right direction that alternatives are being offered. Friends had an Iveco 4x4 factory built and the vendors just refused alternatives, mostly dure to them not being familiar with it. They travel a lot like us (just faster) and really struggle in the remote areas. Right now, we're in Sardinia and already it would have been a royal pain if we were dependent on campsites - as most are still closed. Thanks for your input, Geoff!

Very informative. I've used a cassette toilet years ago in a previous motorhome and did find it disgusting. I have a Nature's Head composting toilet in my skoolie and can't imagine using any other system. It allows freedom from searching for dump stations as you mentioned, which is great. You do need a supply of peat moss on board, but that's about the only down side.

We reckon that it's only once you've made the switch, that you realize how bad the cassette option is i- n comparison.

I must be weird, I've just watched a 13 min video about toilets and actually enjoyed it. Thanks guys for explaining in detail all of the various options available. Don't laugh, but it took me ages to work out exactly what a separation toilet was until I saw the images of the unit where it was clear that there was two compartments and then the penny dropped. I couldn't figure out why Lisa was saying that as a woman it takes a bit of getting used to. I know that you guys did a great video of when McGyver (alias Andre) changed your cassette toilet. So, this was a great extension to that video. Its amazing the difference that it seems to have had on your campervan lifestyle, its like you are now free to go where you want to go versus going where your cassette toilet wants to take you ! I can see it now, Andre in the middle of the Champs de Elysee with a spade trying to dig a hole in the cobbles during the summer Olympics. Don't do it Andre, there is a McDonalds just around the corner..... Wonderful video folks, thanks for sharing.

Can I ask how you do your yearly vehicle inspection? Do you have to go back to Italy every year for it? Is it absolutely necessary to do this every year? A suggestion : I would love to see Lisa do a yoga / exercise routine for van living. Thanks again for sharing your travel adventure with us!

Biosol is the answer to the smell in the casette. We recycle our casette tank . Just pump the contents through a osmosis filter system . The liquid part that comes out is fresh water which we put back in our water tank and the pulp we collect in a box whick we just put in any bin. A full casette leaves about a coke can size of pulp to dispose of . .................. Just woke up from my dream that I had invented a new system that would change the world of motorhome toilets . The Biosol bit is true. Casette is easy as you say in europe but will be adding an underslung spare casette for the time when it is getting full and you do not want to go hunting disposal. Would love incinerating type but would have to fitted by manufacturer . This is as you said changing type in a modern exspsnsive motorhome is a bit of a challange and would never look as good if mouldings were designed to suit that toilet.

You had me going there for a moment. Brilliant 'invention' 😁😁Someone else mentioned a Arwinger retrofit for modern motorhomes. So far that's the best option if you don't want to completely remove the unit. Soon we may see more suppliers going this route.

One question I have (which you might not be able to answer) is if you didn’t have the fan the do you think it would smell? I know the separett has a built in fan so perhaps you always have it on but other systems don’t yet people say there is very little smell.

  • @WeWillNomad

I remember GadgetJohn fitted a Tiny without the fan but he wasn't happy with the result. Firends of ours in a motorhome has a Trelino unit which they also used without a fan initially, but they ended up adding a fan. I guess it depends on the design and whether there is a composting agent involved. We've never tried it without the fan but I think it plays a crucial role.

Hello Andre & Lisa .. we are definitely thinking about getting a separation toilet. As full timers we agree with your decision making! However just one thing .. I fitted a SOG on the cassette a few years ago and we have never had smells as you described ?? Of course when I empty it in an appropriate place there is a short smell as I empty it. But not whilst we are using the toilet or driving etc?? We took your advice on the EcoFlow (thank you) .. so may well follow you on the Tiny .. although there is a German company that sells a same size Thretford cassette as we use but if has two compartments.. ! You just clip a new separating seat on and that’s it! Will let you now how it goes. 😊😎👌
