Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years, I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, become an integral part of our ecosystem, and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see and survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish, or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

My father is a kind, soft spoken man. I was shocked while hunting with him in my early 20s when he nailed a buck running from 220 yards with a 3030 Marlin (Side eject with an old Weaver TV scope). I watched it through my scope, and he ratcheted that 3030 lever action like John Wayne. It was a moment that I will never forget. Choosing 300BLK over 223 has more to do with your choice of barrel length. If your barrel is shorter than 12 or so inches, you’ll loose a significant amount of energy/velocity with a low-mass round like the 223. 300BLK lets you retain a significant amount of energy with very short barrels. And short barrels provide benefits of maneuverability and concealability. 300BLK is also better for suppressed firearms because if you want to get more benefit from your suppressor, you run sub-sonic ammo. And again, with a slower velocity round, you want to increase mass to retain energy (and more significant terminal ballistics)

6mm ARC is my preferred AR15 Cartridge. I'm really not a fan of the ELDX bullets but I'll have to admit they work phenomenally in 6ARC . Especially the 103g ELDX. They work as advertised out of my 16" 6ARC. I'm getting 2550 FPS which makes it extremely good for 300 yards and in . I live on east coast so 150 yards is extremely far shot lol . I've taken 3 deer and 5 hoggs with this setup and couldn't be happier . 300 Blackout was actually designed to replace MP5SD for Devgru and the 300 Blackout did replace the MP5SD . The 300 Blackout that won that contract was AAC HONEY BADGER . Kevin Brittingham from AAC is the one who developed the 300 Blackout . Remington bought AAC and Kevin went to Sig Sauer and helped them develop their Suppressor line up . Then Kevin started Q LLC . Now Kevin has created the 8.6 Blackout
“OH HEY! I’d didn’t see you there”
I got a 350 legend for my boys to hunt with, I'm not a fan of many guns but i made an exception because of the ease of converting an AR-15 to this, we love it, 3" high at 100yards is 3" low at 190 yards, works great

I’ve always liked to carry my 32 Winchester Special when ever I go out to the woods to put out corn or to change out camera cards. Small enough I can carry it in one hand and carry a bag of corn on my shoulder
man, ive wanted a Winchester 30-30 my entire life! beautiful piece, brother!
How does the 300 blackout or 350 Legend compare to 7.62x39?

.300blk was designed specifically to out perform the 7.62x39.

300 outperforms in just about every category except the most important to most. Cost. I have an AR in both but shoot my 39 WAY more and the way shits going I might sell my 300. I only have a few hundred rounds for it while several thousand stocked for the other

Out of a 9 inch barrel is has the same velocities and terminal ballistic performance as a full size barrel ak. I'd say it out performs it when u consider the small package yet heavy hitting for hunting home defense u name it. Not to mention the suspension abilities with sub sonic ammo.

@@300blkwarrior8 if the market could get the price down it would be the perfect caliber. I have a 10.5 blackout pistol and impulsively bought a BCA 762x39 upper because of price. 232$ shipped to my door. It's dual charging which I thought was neat and when I broke it.down to inspect I was pleasantly surprised to find nice wide and polished feed ramps and they all come with the better extractor and firing pin for the steel ammo. The guns a beast and I bought 2k rounds mil surp for just under 700 to my door. Might come just shy of the 300 in all tests but it will get the job it's intended for done.
Winchester claims the 350 Legend is the new 30-30.

350 does have the adverage of being straightwalled, which matters in some jurisdictions.
I agree 30/30 is great to start the kids off on!! More of a 45/70 guy myself
I always shot a 35 Remington pump. my grandfather always shot it and left his grandsons and uncles each a 35 32 and 30 Remington pumps.
I thought the 350 legend was the new 30-30
I’ll stick with my 30/30 for the brush, she’s been too faithful.

The truth is 30/30 is actually one of the worst cartridges when it comes to being deflected by brush that there is in regards to common hunting cartridges. Grandpa's myth about it penetrating brush with less deflection than other cartridges because of it's nose is just that, a myth. Testing has proven different and has shown what's best for brush penetration has absolutely nothing to do with a bullets nose profile. What makes a good brush penetrator is a bullets cross sectional density (width compared to length), the longer a bullet is per it's diameter the more it'll deflect going through brush irregardless of it's nose's profile, the same tests showed that with any given cross sectional density different nose profiles didn't affect it's deflection through brush one iota, that part simply has no effect on things despite what all the "old timers" used to say. The way it works is the longer a bullet is compared to it's width the more it's prone to deflection because the back end wants to come around trying to get in front, the longer it is compared to it's width the worse that effect therefore causing the bullet more deflection, this is what causes deflection irregardless of the nose's profile. The best performing brush penetrators that keep the straightest flight path traveling through brush are one's shorter compared to their diameter, like a 305 gr 45/70, or even a pistol cartridge like .45 Long Colt or .44 Mag, wherein a typical 30/30 load has a bullet that's very long compared to it's diameter, that's what actually makes them one of the worst when it comes to being deflected by brush. But what most people don't get is that it actually doesn't matter, when your target is inside of or just on the other side of brush even the bullets that are deflected the most by brush it's not far enough from where the bullets deflection starts that the bullets deflected course is even really measurable, in order for it to really make any kind of difference anyway you'd have to be inside a pile of brush yourself shooting outwards or say shooting through brush that's half way or less to a target that's a fair distance away, realistically that's not what happens, what really does happen is a deer is being shot that's either inside of or just on the other side of brush, either way even the worst deflecting bullets won't have their flight path altered enough to make any difference, you're still gonna hit very close to your aiming point anyway. Most likely the myth got started years ago when 2 guys shot at the same deer standing in some brush and only one hit it, that night after getting it home and digging out the slug they found it was the 30/30 that hit it and not the 30/06 Springfield, then they drew the incorrect conclusion that the pointed Spitzer type nose of the 30/06 must have deflected going through the brush when the reality is the guy shooting the 30/06 just plain missed. It's curious how people put so much stock in what people who had no measuring devices or any other type of modern equipment to conduct experiments with had to say on the matters of firearms and bullets, they could barely afford enough bullets back then to keep meat on the table much less conduct experiments with that take hundreds of rounds worth of information to draw any kind of concrete conclusions with, basically they wet their finger and stuck it in the air and even then their conclusions are strictly based on what they "figure", yet people will go through life putting 100% of their faith in what Grandpa's said as opposed to the proof gathered by organizations who've shot hundreds of rounds that were captured on high speed film proving things beyond a shadow of a doubt. 30/30's are good deer cartridges simply because they've got enough accuracy and energy to reliably kill a white tail deer at the distances they're typically shot at, coupled with the fact that your average lever action 30/30 is light weight and handy enough to carry through deer territory, but not because of the brush penetrating myth that's always surrounded them, that part simply isn't true.

@@dukecraig2402 I tried my own testing with 444 Marlin 240gr bullets with a plain carboard target set in the brush and got major deflection and not a brush buster, maybe a 45/70 with 325s might do better.
Ron, you really stirred up the wasps nest on this one!! Lololol 😆😆😆!!! Here in Southern Arizona, my best friends and I used to hunt the thickest mesquite bosques there were along the border 40 years ago with 1894 Winchester and Marlin saddle carbines in 30-30, 32, 38-40, 38-55, and .44mag. Yes, short, fast and never tangled up in the brush as well as busting through the thickest brush. As the AR platform "developed" and came the flattop AR's in 5.56 with free floated 24" barrels we would use them for Coyotes with hand made 5 round magazines. 3 or 4 of us would lay out early/late on a high wash bank and get after them 'Yotes! Took a lot of coyotes that way and the platform was accurate! I, ("we"), would hand load for specific game to make sure I was hitting to the point of aim with any of my calibers, 5.56, 270Win, 30-30, 7.62, .30-06', 7mm Mag, .44mag. 300BLO, is an excellent round, and it has slightly better ballistics than 30-30, but, IMHO, it's six of one and a half dozen of the other. Lol!! Besides, I have hunted thick stuff with an old S&W M29, stainless 8 1/2" and a 3x scope for for maybe 30 years. My best friend still uses an old Ruger Redhawk in .30Carb with a 4x! But what the Hey!, I'll pull out one of the "clones" (M4), hit the range and work on a heavy, hard hitting hunting load, find the ancient 5 rounders and hit what's left of the bosques up north....... Might even be "Sexy" to carry around and get game! Sorry, lol, being a little sardonic! I agree with you, 16" barrels are easily handled. It's why we carried levers in saddle carbines and "short rifles"!! Very cool Ron!
My .30-30 is my favorite rifle over any of them. Daytime hunting of course.
…….but the 300 is ugly
Not even close, the 30-30 has way better ballistic. The blackout lacks reliable expanding bullets, I've seen countless deer lost because of a blackout and I hunt in Florida where the deer average 100 lbs. The 30-30 is just proven!

They don’t lack expanding bullets people just don’t want to pay for the hood stuff.
Love the lever actions, I have them in 30-30, .357, 44 mag, and working on a 45-70. Ron your vids are one of the best. Keep up the great work!

I like 35 Remington; bigger punch. I have a 336 Marlin lever action chambered in 35, made in 1957, best brush gun ever made
anytime i see a dirty thirty on my page it’s an instant follow
I love my lever-action 30-30 for hunting...
35rem is my brush gun. Best I have ever shot is a marlin lever. Everybody thinks they need the newest shiniest thing. Corporations sell this need.

I love my 336 35 rem as well. It is a shooter.
I went from an 30-06 to a 6.5 creedmoor. Love them both
AR platform isn't as easy to carry as the lever action in my opinion.... But if I chose the AR platform it would be chambered 6.5 grendel. 300blk is fine also, but the 6.5 grendel is amazing, and reaches out a little further.
My GPAW hunted anything that moved in the swamp. He loved lever actions and 44 mag. He would carry a model 94 and some sorta 44 mag revolver. One ammo, 2 weapons. If he could see it, we could eat it.
I think a good compromise is something like a magpul polymer stock remmington 700. It's a good compact, handy and light rifle, but it also has that polymer furniture and sexy ergonomics to attract the younger crowd. It's close to the perfect modern hunting rifle imo.
I prefer the 35 Remington over the 30/30 for hunting. Bit more knockdown power at the same distance. I've been using the 30/30 more lately. The struggle is real for 35 rem ammo.
I personally go for the 30-06 bolt action. It's just easier to maintain and feels cooler lol
Ron... I love you bro... but a 300 blackout will NEVER replace my 30-30
Definitely would like a 30/30 and the ammo for it
Last Sunday, on the 2nd day of regular, I got a 7 point buck, with about a 240lbs body, with my 336w 30-30 lever with 1 shot, about 75 yards, while it was running. 1 shot, down. I don't need some fancy pants synthetic rifle lol
I had a 300 blackout. After taking a few animals with my 350 legend I don’t think I’ll ever hunt with the 300 again
Don't care for the short's format but the content is good.
Then there's the Marlin chambered in either 357mag, 41 mag, and 44mag. Or, the model 8 Remington in 30-30 or 35 Remington. Or even the Ruger model 44. Semiautomatic 44mag.
Don’t forget another reason for the 30/30 longevity was the terminal ballistics performance of the flat point bullets on energy transfer to tissue.
I've got a pre 63 Model 94 in 32 SPL. Awesome, awesome gun. Ammo ain't cheap though!
I have a 98k carbine that was retooled for 308 by the Spanish and even though it's bolt action if you have your sling at the right length and put the time in the get used to the Mauser action it's a great deer/hog rifle. The best gun is the gun you know.
I love my old old marlin … opinions very.. good video
First rifle was a 35 marlin lever action loved the way it busted through brush and stayed on point
