Here in Wisconsin the DNR has issued a four day hunting season for cinder blocks. A strict bag limit of 3 cinder blocks per day light or dark grey. The 30-30 is preferred as it leaves more cinder block for cooking.

My dad left a Marlin 336, manufactured in 1951, and chambered in.35 Remington. My wife used to have a matching rifle but in 30-30. Both rifles were sweet shooting, short range guns. Quick to shoulder, very effective on deer. My brother said that dad’s Marlin is a thumper but he needs to learn reloading. He can’t find ammunition but he’s got a little brass that my dad hung onto from years ago.

That's actually the same reason I prefer 30-06. You can load it all the way up to a 220 grain bullet which turns it into a legit large/dangerous game rifle and pushes it beyond what pretty much any other non magnum cartridge can do. Most people would never have a need for that though and when it comes to whitetail or pig there's not much difference other than effective range.

Totally get it. My father was a big western fan. He named me after a western star. And he had a 30-30 that I used to go hunting with him with. There is not a time I don't see a 30-30 that I don't think of him. I admit though that the 30-06 is a better all round hunting weapon, 1000 yards vs 200 yards effective range, can put down a griz more easily, or a big moose, but still love the 30-30 just because it reminds me of him. Ain't that the way it happens...

@@alexmh6131 correct. this is the only reason why I purchased a .308 as my deer rifle of choice. In terms of price to performance the .308 is more economical. the .30-06 is definitely, in terms of ballistics, the superior round however. Flatter Trajectory and slightly better range for a price I find to be too unjustifiable for my personal economic incentives at this time. I am also a mediocre shot at ranges beyond 150 yards where I am incompetent in calculating bullet drop and wind and other environmental factors. I simply can't find the time to practice and the .308 is less expensive for practice.

I'm sold on 30-06. About 25 years ago I was shopping for a rifle that I could use for just about any game that I might draw for in AZ. A Browning semi-auto in 30-06 checked all the boxes. Usable for any game I was likely to draw for. Ammo reasonable cost and available everywhere. Excellent ballistics. A very reliable semi-auto. Never regretted the choice.

I had a neighbor take me shooting one day and he demonstrated the difference between different rounds. We used some watermelons as targets. We had 30.06, 223, 9mm, 380, 44mag, and 45acp. Here is what happened. 223... Hit the watermelon made little hole in and slightly bigger out. This round in commonly found in what the media calls an assault rifle, we shot it out of an AR15. 9mm... little hole in and quite a bit bigger going out. Common round in semi-auto handguns. We used a Baretta (cant remember the model but similar to the military issue) 380... little hole in little hole out. This round is not as common any more, it's slightly larger in diameter than a 9mm but not as powerful. We had a small revolver for this one (cant remember the model) 44mag. This was fun... the watermelon had a big hole in and was missing most of the back. I didn't like shooting this one as the revolver we used kicked like a mule. It was a Ruger blackhawk. 45acp. My favorite of the handgun rounds we used. Similar effect as the 44mag but the Colt 1911 was smooth and easy to shoot. This round is not as popular as it used to be but still a great round all and all. And last was the 30.06 I saved the comments about this one to be last as the media doesn't have as much problem with single shot type hunting rifles as they do with the big scary sounding "semi-auto" sporting rifles. We used a Remington 700 for the shooting and I fell in love with this rifle (I now own one even). I cant tell you what size the entrance hole was because the watermelon pretty much exploded on impact. When I say exploded I dont mean like it left a crater in the ground but we were about 20 yards away for all shots and the 30.06 we saved for last and we ended up getting watermelon guts all over the range and even back on us. Not just one melon either, we hit 3 melons with each round (there were 3 of us shooting that day) and all 3 times with the 30.06 we got sprayed!

Great demonstration. I own an M1 Garand in 30.06 and it is my go-to weapon when going tactical (so to speak). I appreciate the .308 round for it's muzzle velocity and mass delivered to the target. I do not own an AR-10 but I wish I did. I also own a Marlin 30.30 for deer hunting. It's really a great round for its intended use. Reliable, accurate weapon everyone should have in their arsenal.

As I recall from my deer hunting days after I got back from service in '68, I looked up the ballistics of my .308 caliber Remington model 788 and compared the ballistics to the 30-06 round. At 500 yards, the bullet drop for the .308 was about 8" lower than the 30-06. Not much difference between the fps or foot pounds either as I recall. Personally I've owned .308 rifle and 30-30 but have fired all 3 calibers. For hunting deer I don't think it would make much difference which caliber was used within 100 yards; the deer would still be dead with a well placed shot.

This is part of the reason why I chose the .308 because it has significantly more power than a 30-30 but yet not that much less than a 30-06 in a shorter action rifle.

How many grains of powder in each bullet? Also the calibers can be loaded with many different bullet sizes. How about a 30-06, 130 vs 220 grain bullet?

after watching a pile of blocks, and other junk being shot by various calibers, my guess is that all 3 only went through 2 layers, after that the were too broken up to do any real damage past that, and the extra damage was due to the amount of energy difference between the 3 rounds

A 30-30 is a good saddle gun since it is shorter than the other 2. I had a Winchester 30-30 and it has killed a few deer, but my meat stick was my Savage 270 bolt action. It was deadly accurate. Ballistic tips make it even more deadly.

  • @tombeyer375

Yeah, those Ballistic Tips are something else! Majority of the time, when you shoot a deer, the bullet goes clean through. Years ago shot a deer with my 7mm Remington Magnum with a 150gr Nosler Ballistic tip. Deer was at 225 yards, standing broadside on a steep upward hill, that swept the front legs back some, facing to the right. Upon skinning the deer, found the bullet just inside the skin of the left leg. Bullet had broken right leg, went through ribs and boiler room and broken left fron leg. Used ALL the energy on that deer! Bullet is now a conversation piece!

Here in the Midwest I have used all three cartridges for hunting cinders. To be fair, I’ve never eaten one, but it looks like the .06 does a nice job of field dressing them for you.

Will B., my Springfield Armory 30-06 is my Heavy Caliber rifle of choice, although I do have a sweet M-1A in .308 and would really appreciate it's Semi-Auto Capability in Certain Situations, if you get my drift ? I do like the ease and weight of my lever action Marlin 30-30, but wouldn't take it if going after BEAR or some Two Legged Varmints.

It helps that the 30-30 was invented `first and was quickly adopted by many hunters. The 30-06 was more expensive for the gun AND the bullets which contributed to the wide acceptance of the 30-30. It really is a sweet all around bullet. Hit a deer in the head to preserve the meat and I guarantee it will not take even one step.

I’ve watched many of your videos and have enjoyed them immensely. I would like for you to make a video with the Mossberg Patriot in .308. I think most of the reviews you do are centered around quality and accuracy of the lower end rifles. I bought one of them for well under $400 and have been pretty impressed with what you get for that price. I have a Vortex Crossfire scope mounted and like them both very much. Think you could do that? Thanks - John

The .308 was selected by the US military to replace the 30-06 due to similar ballistics at reduced in weight and increase ammunition carry capacity.
