Have used the bow line knot (rabbit knot, as I have referred it as) for years. Really appreciate you bringing all the possibilities and and safety along with it. I like the fact your reducing weight and a piece out of the mix. Great point on messing with the quick link in not so great weather, as we all know it's is usually cold, rainy or snow you deal with that time of year. Thanks for sharing. Jason, just wanted to thank you for your honesty and candor on your latest podcast on tree stand safety (#467 for those interested in the future). It takes guts to admit and talk publicly about your past mistakes, and for someone like me who is running a hang on full time for the first time this year, it is super helpful to know what things to think about that we wouldn't really anticipate until experiencing them for ourselves-experiences which might result in significantly worse injury than you (thankfully) went through in the past on the falls you've experienced. You probably don't hear it enough, but you're service to the community is really immeasurable.

Everyone should use what works best for them. Kind of hard to “tie” a quick link wrong in the dark, it’s pretty much fool proof. Never heard of a quick link “failing”. Instead of a a rubber grommet, I wrap a bungee ball around my rope and create an elastic ball around the rope that slides up and down the rope like the grommet, but it doesn’t wear out and get loose. Also just use a daisy chain to go around limbs. Thanks for sharing your system.

I practice tying all the knots I use with my eyes closed. But when hunting I still use a headlamp, wether I’m hanging sticks or tying knots. I love this video. It’s changed the way I hunt.

The bowline is just fine in all working conditions. Just needs an overhand knot on tail. This was taught to us in an advance rope rescue course. The bowline is also used in tree trimming / limping and is under significant amounts of weight Stressing use an overhand knot on tail.

Great idea double looping

The bowline is not recommended for lifeline situations where you would be weighting and unweighting the line since it has the potential to work its way undone. Also, If using it in a climbing situation you should at least utilize the Yosemite follow through or a double overhand stopper knot to mitigate the risk of the knot coming undone. These are known risks in the climbing industries and I would like to encourage you to share these risks with your followers. Additionally I’m not sure where you typical attach your tether but you have entirely too much slack. The fall factor on 3-4’ of slack rope isn’t small and that short rope isn’t going to do much in the way of decreasing the forces. The bowline is a great knot that everyone should know how to tie, but they should also know it’s proper uses and risks to be safe as possible. Stay safe and encourage others to do the same.

great points and appreciate the comment. we all need to take safety very seriously! under no situation is my bowline moving or moving when not under tension. well aware of all of this, my entire system was made with the help of a 35 year veteran commercial arborist. and as i said in the video I would not have this much slack in the line when i was showing it. I said when im on stand and hunting I have this snugged up and tight and riding higher on the tree.

I was wanting to replace my quick link on my tether because of the noise and I always have to carry a stubby wrench wrapped in silencing tape just in case the quick link were to jam up. I've been looking for a replacement and I've found it. Thank you.

I used to climb really high 30' or more with a climbing stand or screw in steps and a hang on. Anymore I just use a fifteen foot ladder stand or still hunt from the ground. I fill my tags and it is way safer or I feel safer👍

@@SamkoTradBow it took me a few times watching and rewinding your video to see what was going on with tying it. It was a bit hard to see exactly what was going on behind your arm and the rope with the spots on it made it hard to see the loops and polls you were talking about, but I got it. I’ve been tying and untying it for a while now to make it second nature. Thanks again for sharing this with us.

Im using sterling duetto evolution dry core 8.4 mm dynamic rope. I have not seen it available by the foot anywhere so you might have to buy 90 feet for 110 bucks. But there are other great options that can be bought by the foot. anything dynamic in the 8mm range will work great as long as it climbing rated.

For your double figure 8 knot tied into your harness, did you wrap the tag end in serving string? This is “permanently” staying on your harness correct?

This seems pretty complex. What about a simple slip knot? Disconnecting is a must for anyone using a long rope and needing to go around a limb on the way up.

I have used the running bowline all season and about 80 different hangs. It's so fast and easy after you tied it a couple times. And so fast. I would not trust a slip knot and with the running bowline if you do slip or tension the knot it's still very easy to undo.

I love your ideas but I have to ask... you'd prefer to untie/retie a knot with cold fingers versus running a quick link? What about one of those carabiners made to handle a side load?

Personally yes. I could tie these knots very easy cold. It's big rope and simple knots. I bet its easier to tie the knots and untie them then it is to work a quick link in the cold. Not to mention if it freezes

Unless you are climbing a super skinny tree, you are not really side loading a carabiner.

So it looks like you're utilizing a running bowline to get around branches with your lineman's belt rather than the notch quickie 2 now? Did you find a flaw in the notch quickie for that purpose? Thanks for the videos by the way, very informative!

Correct. The notch was awesome and worked fantastic. I just wanted to reduce things that could be dropped or lost or jam up. So knots became my best option. And they are so easy and fast enough to do.

8.4mm dynamic and don't remember the length. Probably 8 feet before I tied the figure 8 to the harness

Think it's 10 or 12 feet. I would start with about 14 and then if you need to trim later you can. But you want enough to go around the tree, have freedom of movement and also enough tag end to hang out a foot or so when you tie in. But really easy to leave it long, try a few trees and then trim as needed. That's what I did.

What’s the tactasaddle you have? I don’t remember if you mentioned it in this video but I don’t want to watch the whole thing to find out again. Lol Congratulations on your move to GA.

If you were using a quick link or carabiner the alpine butterfly is a perfect knot to make a loop anywhere along the line

What harness is that your using? I like that. Also you gave me a great idea with this teather, im all about light and getting rid of things i dont need. I tie bowlines all the time, im gona run my tether just like this.

Nice, thanks for the reply. I bought a cheap rock climbing harness on Amazon but i like that your has the longer leg straps and mine does not have linemans loops. I'm using the center as linemans loop for now.

@Beards-Bellies-beers yep spent years modifying rock harnesses and final said enough. Came up with the design and had John at tactisaddle.com make it. I jave 4 or 5 videos on it on my channel if you search harness or tactisaddle.

Most people using the quick links are on a 40’ rappel rope. And I personally have my bow tied to the end of the rope so can’t pull the tag end of the rope threw to tie your knot.

Actually the running bowline like I am showing her doesn't need to have the Tag end pulled thru. Watch the video and you will see how I tie it just as fast as a quick link when moving around branches. But never need to pull the tag end thru. My tag end is permanently attached to my harness

10 feet after I tie in the figure 8 to the harness. This gives me alot of extra for hunting huge diameter trees that I'm often in. I also carry strap extensions for my sticks and stands. So if buying rope by the foot I'd buy 13 or 14 feet to get 10 left over after the knot and some room for error.

@@SamkoTradBow Jason, I don't think I'll receive my TWBS Harness in time for my planned November hunt. I wanted to get your thoughts on a couple of options. I have a climbing harness from my college days - would it be safe to use the belay loops or even just the top belay loop to hook my lineman belt into, while having the safety tether tied into both of them? Would this work for now, or would you recommend that I get a full vest style harness with lineman's loops (such as the Muddy Safeguard)? Really appreciate your guidance!

@@ram_bam as long as the loops are true belay loops and fall rated not just gear loops it would work. Otherwise a regular harness to tide you over will be best bet

@@SamkoTradBow I’m perfectly good with a Figure 8 on a Bight. Tried the quick link thing for shits and giggles but I really don’t see the point. Even if you’re pulling up 20-25 feet of tether rope to feed through a eye/girth hitch, it literally takes a few seconds. Certainly as quick as fiddling the screw lock/unlock deal on a quick link.

Yeah, the “dick & balls” hitch just doesn’t sound as good as the “alpine butterfly “ hitch.

@@wendyandwalter40 a bowline is not hard on a rope or on the strength of a rope. There is a reason is one of the most used knots in the arborist community and rock climbing and industrial climbing.
