    Modelers ask guitarists to think like a sound engineer. This is a good thing. Learning the value of high and low cuts will improve your sound, whether live or recording. Btw, when we were playing through amps, the engineer was making these cuts whether we realized or not. And yes, a great tip by Leon, a touch of verb after the cab will add in depth to the sound, which we are accustomed to hearing.

    Great tips and tricks. Learning the best order to dial in really important. I totally agree, Cabs and Mics first. These make the biggest basic changes, and get you into the ballpark the fastest. These are the methods I use in my Modeler, and they work perfectly. I wish I knew them when I started out, as it would have saved me a lot of time and frustration. Listen to Leon. 😎

    Thanks for this and the tips/tricks! I just got myself a TMP about a week ago. I had practice with the 3 diff bands I play in over the past few days and all of them commented on how great the tone was. I was also using the FR-12. And all I was doing was basically playing a Tele into a Twin Reverb with the creamback speakers and varying amounts of overdrive. I don't have any specific tips to offer, I basically just used it like I would a regular amp haha. This is my first foray into the world of modeling and the main thing I'm finding is I really have to tame the treble/high end stuff. I'm not sure if it's because I'm playing a Tele (mostly on bridge pickup, have the noiseless pickups) or that's just how it is. For example, if I just load up a Plexi in the TMP, the default is quite harsh and even fizzy (maybe it would be different with humbuckers?). Once I bring up the amp interface, crank the Presence way down and the treble down a bit, maybe bump up the mid and bass a touch, then it sounds absolutely fantastic.

    Close mic'ing is like putting your ear right near the speaker, so it's way brighter than a regular cab in a room. It takes a while to get used to it but when you do the consistency is so nice.

    Great video Leon! Another thing I’ve found is the guitar can be boomy through a PA, especially with the EVH amp (my most gigged amp). I’ll bring the low cut up to 120hz. I’ve never had to go this aggressive with the AxeFx3, but man it helps with the TMP. Awesome work man 🤘

    Very helpful Leon, thank you for posting this. I have a question about this set up method. Do you feel that you can get close to dialing in a modeler like this one on your DAW and studio monitors, and get close to what it will sound like through a FOH situation? Theoretically, it would seem like that, but I always seem to end up tweaking at sound check because something seems to be a bit off. Is there some special set up on the DAW that you use to simulate FOH situations?

    Basically just brute force with the high cut. I've found the Adams translate well live, it just depends on the room and the rig with regards to how much of that tip end spice it needs

    completely unrelated to your video but how come in so many presets, delay and reverb is after the cab? I get that is probably ideal and sound better but in the real world apart from studio, its a bit hard to pull off. Wouldnt the more accurate live be the time based effects in between amp and cab, as if it were the effects loop?

  • @LeonTodd

    @LeonTodd

    Given how much focus they've put on the touch screen and foot switching features I'd be surprised if they did a rack anytime soon. Having said that, they're a titan in the guitar space so if they wanted to I'm sure they could make it happen.

    Hey Leon, these close mic positions are what's used when recording guitars but then an engineer sculpts the final sound later. So does that mean that placing the mic further away would give us a more in-the-room sound? Coz when you're playing thru an actual amp you stand a few feet away typically and so placing the mic where your ear would be relative to a real amp in that situation, would it sound more like playing a real amp in a room? Or is my thinking off and it doesn't really work like that with modelers? If it does, then being further away the mic possibly needs less of a high cut?

  • @LeonTodd

    @LeonTodd

    8 ай бұрын

    It depends on how long the IR's are and the frequency response of the mic. You can create reflection free "far field" IR's that work well for that, but a typical dynamic mic placed far away just sounds like a mic placed far away :p
