I first heard this song on her Live at Last album in the very early 80s and it's a bit different from the Divine Madness concert film but that's the beauty of a Bette Midler performance - no two are ever alike but always astoundingly beautiful. She keeps it fresh and engaging.

Me too, cried like a baby when I took of in my Olds Cutlass in 78 to drive solo to Oregon from Michigan for a geographical cure (I wasn't aware of that term at the time though) as I played this cassette! 5 years later I got sober back home in Michigan. Still am, but Tom Waits can still make me cry!

I was at the Pasadena Civic with my boyfriend John Moss, and our dates Maud Adams and Britt Ekland. And yes, it rained like crazy that night. I think I'd seen every live performance you had given in Los Angeles up to that point, and most of your concerts and movies since then. This song is one of my favorites - still makes me cry decades later after "Songs for the New Depression" was released. Never got to meet you but came close once - went with Sandy Gibson to the premiere of "The Rose" in Century City. I feel I know you because you're so giving of yourself. No one compares to you and your performances. You command the stage like few others...the audience laughing their asses off one moment and absolute quiet the next - it's amazing how you do that. Thank you for being you. So glad we have these moments memorialized on film forever, to be enjoyed for generations to come, from IMO, the greatest entertainer of this or any generation. The amount of joy I've received over the decades from you has made my life worth living.

On this day in 1980 {September 13th} the Bette Midler concert movie "Divine Madness" had its world premier at the Toronto Film Festival... Thirteen days later on September 23rd it went into limited release in the U.S.A. She received a Golden Globe nomination for 'Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy'. A song featured in the movie, "My Mother's Eyes", was released as a single and on Nov. 22nd, 1980 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #39 & spent 13 weeks on the Top 100.

dankshadows No. I believe she changed the lyric to "so allow me" which is almost phonetically identical. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. And "swallow me", like the Bible reference to Job is just plain stupid even tho it is correct for the original version. Notice she also changed the lyric "to be up in the crow's nest" to "come up to the crow's nest". Additionally, this is THE BEST arrangement ever. The off-key ship's bell is genius. She also did a medley of I Shall Be Released and You Can't Always Get What You Want and also changed some lyrics to the first song. Prove me wrong. "Every *WOMAN'S* got to have protection" also from Divine Madness.

I wonder if the songs Shiver Me Timbers and Rainbow Sleeve were cut from the home video release due to Tom Waites and copyright issues? Shiver Me Timbers was also cut from the video release (along with a few other great songs) of The Bette Midler Show (Live At Last). She seems to have a history of cutting things out of video releases due to expensive copyright issues, such as the Delores segment of Showgirl Must Go On. Hmmm..

What a beautiful and thoughtful reply you wrote to leftatalbuquerque. Thank you. Of course the song is about suicide. Setting sail on an unknown ocean is always a metaphor for that. But as you said, because of the genius of Tom Waits as a writer and Bette as a performer, it's also a song about the possibility of rejuvenation through change.

I think that the song has many meanings and - specifically - interpretations, according to the singer /performer. I have heard Bette say that [when she sang this song] she was thinking of gay men leaving (travelling) from their hometowns in rural America ... to settle and find a 'home' in cities like San Francisco or New York. I find her version especially affecting. :)

I know she didn't write it, Justin. I just meant it was one of the ones she sang so well and made sound so beautiful. I was just really disappointed by this clip.
