That was great, thank you for sharing. She really was rather insistent on the fact that Joan Crawford really was too ill at the time of HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE despite shows such as "feud" depicting a bitter Joan Crawford being difficult to the point where they had to recast her role. Who knows of course what the truth really is -- and, in my little opinion, 'charlotte' would have been better with Joan in it, not to dismiss Olivia's performance but I just feel that chemistry wise it would have been stronger with Davis and Crawford. Bette didn't mince words regarding Susan Hayward - did she! In later years, she was really critical of Faye Dunaway after working with her on The Disappearance of Aimee - so, it seems odd that she was rather conservative regarding her remarks (at least, at this particular time) about Joan Crawford. All in all, an interesting interview and I appreciate hearing it.

I have a lot of respect for Crawford, Davis, De Havilland, and Stanwyck as actresses and love their bodies of work.

There is nothing "rude" by telling a person who is complaining that the FREE content they are given isn't uploaded to their specifications. What is rude is a person complaining about such, and what is particularly rude, and childish, is a person's need to announce they unsubscribed because they do not like a pointblank honest comment.

Anything Davis says about Crawford i divide in half while looking in a mirror and subtract 99%

Where Love Has Gone was terrible. What a waste of time. Bland as Cream of Wheat. What was the point of the movie without at least one big over the top drama scene between Davis and Hayward?

Miss Davis is very curt, almost cagey, when discussing Miss Crawford‘s work on “Charlotte.“. As she should have been. It is still amazing that she feels she would’ve been “right“ for the part of Martha in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?“ Never mind the awkwardness of the opening scene, referencing the classic “What a dump“ line from “Beyond the Forest.“ Never mind that. Miss Davis’ ham-handed, overtly demonstrative acting-style would’ve ruined the picture. The artificiality and pretense would’ve been so wrong for that part. Miss Taylor played it beautifully, naturally, and looked age-appropriate for the role. The virago Martha had to have at least a modicum of sex appeal left to her, in order to entice/seduce the young professor. Davis could not have accomplished this. It would not have worked. Imagine her wringing her hands all over the place, breaking-down in one of her synthetic pools of tears. I’m certain even Edward Albee himself would’ve objected to her being cast. And for her to go on about the role of Maxine Faulk is quite comical. Not only did she put the entire stage company, performers and producers alike, through hell, she crafted the character, as she always had done, from the outside first rather than from the inside. All show, litle substance. Her Maxine’s Tabasco-colored hair, shirt buttoned down to the navel, cackling and braying . It was a joke. These points of play acting were what Miss Davis considered capable performing, as good acting, perhaps even great acting. Aaron Spelling’s “The Decorator”“ was not picked up, because the pilot was less a story about an interior decorator and her upcoming adventures and more about Miss Davis and her waning appeal with the public. She also insisted that she had to be lit a certain way, which would’ve added budgetary and time restraints. This is one of those roles where her over-the-top performing style worked, because she was playing a Margo Channing-type. Actressy. Theatrical. Guffaw. Cackle. Shriek. That’s what Miss Davis did. That was her stock in trade. I never bought the fantasy that she had been gifted with this incredible range. She hadn’t. In fact, to listen to her perform during the interview hits home the truth that Miss Davis‘ greatest performance was playing Bette Davis.

Very well put! Davis played herself in most of her roles, and did not have the range of Crawford, who could play both comedic and dramatic roles.
