Wassat? You mean Outer Worlds? EDIT: This was referring to the guy who said whatever about Parvati, he's the first comment at the top. I wasn't trying to say to the original commenter "When you said play Disco Elysium did you actually mean play Outer Worlds?" because I'm not an idiot, I have good taste and while OW is a good game, Disco Elysium looks so good, I've been dying to play it since the moment I first saw it get reviewed by Skill Up or whoever. Problem is, I don't think my PC can run it, so I've been waiting for a console release. Which may never happen. But since so many of you replied to me saying like all this stuff about the differences between the games and why Disco is better and whatever, I agree with all of you, my comment was aimed at a person and I forgot to "AT" him I guess. Apologies for the confusion. Although I do think OW is a good game. But DE is on a whole nother level and I cannot wait until the day I get to experience it.

Shit is still the same in Starfield, lol. Did a mission where I’m supposed to convince some dude to give up some priceless family heirloom. Makes it VERY clear that nothing short of death will change his mind. I pick the dialogue option that basically says “hey dude. The sooner we get the item, the sooner I get out of your hair.” And he’s just like “YAXTUALLY, YOIRE RIGHHT! HERE YIU GO!”

@@epion660 You know, this kind of dialogue works in real life sometimes. If th person, usually a girl, was just trying to be melodramatic or just wanted to be hard to get, often times, just asking again or with a more playful inflection in the voice can get people to do what they already knew they wanted to do in the first place. This isn't bad writing, it's bad voice acting. Actually, it's bad writing, bad voice acting, and bad voice directing. Because the writer should've had her say, "Oh..no..that won't be necessaary...Have them make the preparations i'll be there shortly.." Just two words is all they had to add, "Oh..no.." thats is, then the voice director should instruct her to make the oh no sound sad, like she had a memory, because she did, then the VA's job is to sound sad and defeated, in that, she tried to be stubborn, and something was brought up forcing her to keep her word. The problem is that Bethesda wants to have 1 dialogue, but theres 4 ways to get to it. And most of the time, that one line doesnt make sense with 4 different preceeding possible sentences. It's the same in all their games and most games tbh, this way they can give us options without having to pay voice actors for 5 different games worth the content, instead, they just record 1 line, and no matter what option you chose, youll get the same line, but you might get silence and some text saying you fucked up but eventually get to the story correct option anyway. its shitty but thats how far tech has come so far, we're not yet to the point that we can have infinite possibilities without paying VA's hundreds of times their fee, for hundreds of times their work. But imagine brothers and sisters. The future of gaming. Where games are trillions of terrabytes in size. And its all online. Where everything is in virtual reality. Where you actually walk and interact with a virtual world, and the AI is REAL AI that can actually hear what you say and respond in the way its personality is programmed to do. We're already working on this tech now. And guess what. There's AI that can respond to hundreds of different voice commands. And a random NPC in a video game wouldn't need to respond to very many things. The trick would be getting enough NPC's to be voice acted, so that they could have enough different voices, but also have thousands of possible responses. Most likely, in the future, they'll just basically grab 1 million people from each dialect, and have those people become premium voice actors, pay them a few million dollars each, and then have them spend their entire lives recording every word in the language they are familiar with. Then, use those same recordings for the rest of video games future. And just alternate them, edit them, change the pitch, etc. in the future we'll have the tech to successfully modify all sounds and VA clips to be able to make them sound like we need, we can already do it anyway. So then they'll just use those voices as Npcs in the virtual reality games. And the AI can respond to almost anything youll say. And it would be pretty easy for them to code it so that if you asked something the AI didnt have a response for, they'd just say, "You're getting a little off topic, arent you?" Then the nxt time you say something, its coded for the AI to reiterate the original question to basically, keep immersion as much as possible, but also tell you theres no response recorded for whatever dum fuckery you just tried to say.

It's a magnificent way to avoid criticism that Bethesda has worked out... You can't have bad writing if you don't have any writing. It's like the dialogue is the synopsis plot points. Instead of a conversation, they looked at the plot points and said, "have the characters literally say that!"

The speech skill in these later Bethesda games reminds me of Death Road to Canada. Certain characters can have a mix of annoying personality traits to enable them to tell other characters to "cool it". This never works, and almost always leads to an escalation of conflict, but if you make the character say it enough times, they get the option of a *SUPER COOL IT!!!* that can magically solve any situation. @declan2775 Oh yeah! I never mentioned that either, but I know what you're talking about. Like in the very beginning in Goodsprings, Easy Pete can be convinced in dialog to hand over the dynamite to fight the powder gingers if their explosives skill is high enough. I wish Bethesda did that. When I played Skyrim, I installed the mod, "Beyond Skyrim: Bruma" (which is a DLC sized mod that allows the player to travel to Bruma in Cyrodiil), the mod developers had a similar mechanic. There's a moment when you're interrogating a storm cloak, and if you're illusion skill is high enough, you can actually get him to tell you more in dialog. It's a shame that Bethesda rarely does that in their games if at all. Let the characters skills show in other elements of the game as well.

Honestly those kind of idiotic power dynamics have probably been the cause of far, far too many violent incidents, haha. It's honestly pathetic the way people subordinate themselves to others like that. Like I understand there's a hierarchy at any job, but at a certain point your morals have to kick in - and if they don't, then you never had any morals to begin with. If you care more about the chain of command than the life of another human being, you're utterly deranged and don't deserve the benefits of society (why should the civilised have to tolerate the uncivilised). You have to be a truly infantile and cowardly person to willingly commit violence on behalf of another (outside of engagements with actual armed targets obviously). Committing atrocities merely because someone with "authority" asked you to is the definition of weakness.

The old game Neverwinter Nights 2 had a part where the speech checks actually made sense. At one point you're framed for slaughtering an entire village and put on trial. If you choose to speak in your own defense you have to make multiple checks with uncertain outcomes before the final check is made. And the better/more relevant arguments you pick affects the difficulty of the check. If you say all the wrong things, the check is impossible and you automatically fail, no matter how good you are. Of course it's also possible to fail even if you pick all the right things, if your skill is too low.

  • @kevinquintana2647

Which actually makes a lot of sense. Having the right argument and still failing if your speech skill isn't high enough. As its a stand in for among other things, not stuttering, confidence, not jumbling words, and actually saying the right things that are inline with the argument you are trying to present. Again you could come up with the perfect speech, but if you fumble it then you fumble it.

@RadTheLad for real it really did feel like the institute was shoehorned into being the villains. All of their evil qualities are due either to gross incompetence and disregard for cause and effect that no real world scientist would have (like releasing the mutants), or an unnecessary and unrealistic disregard for ethics. They should have done animal testing first with their strain of FEV but instead they immediately jumped to human trials. The excuse they give for kidnapping Shawn was that they needed human DNA untainted by radiation mutations, but there were plenty of examples of perfectly healthy and functional humans topside. There was no reason they couldn't have used those samples, and given how advanced they are they could have just edited out any genetic flaws from radiation exposure. We know they have access to CRISPR, hell all synths they produce are already genetically modified to be superior to humans. Their ethical disregard for the outside after the failure of the SINGLE attempt at alliance they made would have made more sense if they were more militaristic and low brow, but their entire society is made up of rational thinkers with tech that has made their lives cushy for hundreds of years. They should look like something out of Star Trek but instead they come off as incredibly stupid, sociopathic and naive.
