Betamax: Old Technology Returns Once More
Фильм және анимация
On May 10, 1975, a Japanese conglomerate called Sony released the Betamax home video system. Throughout the late 70s and early 80s, they were in combat with the VHS, created by JVC in 1976. They may not have won, but they did leave a very good impression, and they have since earned more fans and collectors. Join me, as I talk to you about the history of the Betamax in Betamax: Old Technology Returns Once More!
Chapters:
00:00 - Intro
01:29 - Part 1 - Prior and Beginning of Betamax
10:05 - Part 2 - VHS Vs. Betamax
31:28 - Part 3 - Commemoration

It's been nearly 9 months since the last "Old Technology Returns Once More", but the wait was worth it. That was a great documentary showcasing the evolution of Betamax and its other products. VHS was mentioned continuously throughout this documentary since Part 2 (the longest part at 21 minutes), but nevertheless, it was nice to see some of the Betamax demo tapes and commercials be featured, which I didn't expect. Keep up the good work Cam, I'm looking forward to what will come next for your documentary series. :-)
a british user talking about a japanese video format (man,i enjoy the video, good video)
I had fun learning about these myself. It was also really fun as this is my 1st time being at your premieres anyways.
And sony was the first brand to fight for the rights to have video tape at home, the movies industry did not like the idea to have movies at home , sony won the rights for to enjoy movies at home
This documentary was definitely worth the 4 month wait, this documentary is spot on everything that we know about the Betamax and the U-Matic and I can't wait for future documentaries from this channel.
Very informative and enjoyable documentary with lots of hard work put in. Well done! ☺
Thanks for the video! Greets from Marcel The Netherlands Europe 👍👍👍
Phenomenal film. Interesting to learn about Betamax, I never knew the facts that are in this film before I watched it! Great work
This is truly excellent. Thanks.
What an awesome documentary about Betamax, CCG88!!!! It's very interesting to see how the format war goes and the different variants of Betamax (that includes Betamax SP, Betacam, ED-Betamax, etc.) and I defiantly know the facts about it's previous system of U-Matic, which it is very unreliable. It was a great video and here's a request that I give you, can you do a documentary of these two early videocassette formats of Phillips VCR (not the VHS VCRs) and Phillips Video 2000? It'll be a very interesting one!! But overall, well done CCG88 on this brilliantly made documentary of the Betamax format. Hopefully there would be more old tech documentaries to come to this channel!! It's simply just *"BRILLIANT!!!!"* :D
Simply excellent, a nice way of practicing English and learn at the same time...
I'm sure what really helped VHS in the UK, was that you could easily rent a VHS machine, from Radio Rentals, DER, Granada, in any UK High Street. At the time I never heard of anyone renting a Betamax machine. In 1981 our family couldn't afford to buy a VCR, so we rented our first VHS machine from Granada. I did see VHS and Betamax at the local Rumbelows store, but they were very expensive in 1981, and so we rented from Granada.
What a wonderful documentary, thanks
I still have my slhf1000 and slhf 900 along with my Beta movie 660 camera with all the accessories. I have 100s of beta video's that i bought when the video stores were selling out.
This is a very professionally made documentary here.
Oh no! Beta! - Snake
14:15 I had two of these Sony C7's to record the entire Band Aid Concert. UK and America. One had to go back to the Council, and the other was written off as damaged, so I got to keep It. It died a few years ago. the Heads went, I could not get any replacements for love nor Money. So I gave It as spares to someone who had one. I still have the tapes, plus early Music Videos that were and still are only on BetaMax tapes. It was Porn that put the Money up for Development of BetaMax and VHS and DVD's. It was the Camera angles that sold It for the Porn Industries. That Is why It was called The Digital Versatile Disc cause They could change the Camera Angles In Real Time. Check a early DVD movie, and look for the Camera symbol and a Number underneath. This Is the Number of angles You can go to while watching the film.
U-Matic was used for a LOT longer than a couple of years (1971-1982). Betacam is what replaced it as the broadcast standard
I Love This!
I subscribed because of this video 👍🏼. BETAMAX FOREVER ‼️📼
I don't need to see the video to know it's going to be great!
What was that background music I heard? Sounds like retro 1970s smooth jazz.
Beta II/III was not in the PAL market. The PAL market had the equivalent of BII right from the start.
Ok, the documentary is very interesting and cool. The information is very true, and the premiere is a especial moment to watch this, if you late, don't worry, seeing late is the same thing. Well, thanks for the people who created and helped in the video and the people on the premiere, that's is all to say to y'all, goodbye. Lucy Olivera 2 - 2020.
I hope you had a fun time making the documentary and also a big pleasure for me to create the thumbnail! 🙂
SVHS was an increased resolution version of VHS (luminance part only with the color being the same low resolution as VHS). I had 3 different SVHS machines and the recording speeds and times were identical to VHS (2 hours in SP on an ST-120 tape and 6 hours in EP on an ST-120 tape). Where did you get the 15 hours from? Are you confusing SVHS with those security recording VCRs?
Maybe rather irrelevant now, but I had skip/scan on my Beta VCR *long* before it became available on VHS. Sony developed all the technologies which would, much later, be added to VHS.

Nice! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Is there going to be a DVD documentary?
Video 2000 from Phillips also was in the format war
hi to all betacam came out in 1982 i came say i still have alot still work 40 years on they are very goold decks right tanks of a video decks there's not many betacam on ebay now that are 100% still have all the front panel parts now and alot get hold of the later betacam digi player to get video from tapes
I had to request it
At least Sony tried?? Also unlike the US, in the UK, there were technically 3 video formats durring the format wars, one by JVC, one by Sony, and one by Philips. The one that Philips has was known by Video 2000, or V2000 for short. And that format lost aling with Betamax in the UK.
here before im possibly disappointed
What if those VHS and Betamax came back to life?

I would like it,but the stupid prejudice is huge.
If you got hacked or sick of algorithms; let’s go back to VCR’s because social media is a stream more for film, and music industries, business, and celebs.
@04:55 U-Matic Drugs ???
WHY SO LAAAATE but can’t wait 😊
Be Kind & Rewind, lol 📼

This Stuff is only in July, Here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l4aNl7iccbO6ls4.html
Hello there. Need I say more?
7:44 ..In the States we pronounce it "BAY-da" rather than "BAY-ta", and pronounce how the U.K./you pronounce it "BEE-ta" rather than "B'AIEE-ta" ;p ... I had to listen to it 4 times to hear the difference
24:40 Utter rubbish. Video8 would fail because of VHSC? Who wrote this? VHSC failed because of Video8. The VHSC manufacturers such as Sharp abandoned VHSC as it lost the market, leaving only JVC and Panasonic trying to flog the dead horse at the end of analogue video.
Disney is currently planning to release The Princess Diaries (2001) on Betamax, Selectavision Video Disc and Laserdisc in 2022
How on earth did you manage to mis-pronounce Beta the American way, all the way through this video I will never know :-) Beta not 'bater'
I will only watch p0rn on "Disco-Vision" the "U-Matic" or "CED" because I'm a purist. and just like Sting I demand a challenge before giving up my essence.

What?
Great system, but please say it properly you're English it's betamax not batamax... With a E not an A 👍👍
To me Betamax is better than VHS. VHS is a cheap knockoff of a real deal.
Betamax crappy
