Best Zoom h6 Settings for Video Production

I use the Zoom h6 Audio Recorder to capture all my microphones on video shoots. Here's a quick walkthrough of the settings I use.

    Great, insightful video :) thank you. I do have a question, though, if maybe you can help - before I end up replacing it. Essentially, the pre-amps seem to offer a lot of noise when putting the gain knobs above 5 or 6. Do you have any ideas or tips for this, please? I have done some research and it seems it's very common with this unit. I have managed to get a 'middle ground' with what I am needing it for, which is having the PAD on (to -20), the gain to 8, and 'mono' output. This still gives me noise, but is somewhat manageable to some degree in post edit (still learning this side of things). Thank you.

    Great video! Very helpful! My main question is about syncing zoom audio with video? If I record at like 48/24, what would the best frame rate be? I feel like I get conflicting answers from some people who say they never experience slipping on modern cameras to others who say it still happens

  • @ShaunHautly

    @ShaunHautly

    4 жыл бұрын

    I’ve never experienced any slippage at any frame rate no my Sony mirrorless cameras. Then again, those have to be restarted (and re-slated) every 30 minutes which would help avoid theoretical slippage. So unless you’re recording for hours, unbroken, I don’t think you’ll run into any slippage issues.

  • @ShaunHautly

    @ShaunHautly

    5 жыл бұрын

    It's not a bad idea, it's more of a preference for your workflow. I enjoy enough room to tweak things later on with a compressor/limiter in post-production, but it is MUCH faster and easier to set it on the zoom. I'm just not sure of how much control you have on the H5 (I don't have an H5). I'm guessing you'll be fine to use the built in features of the H5 and save yourself a few stages during post. If you're taking an audio feed out of the mixing board, just make sure you check it periodically. If the sound engineer adjusts levels up or down and it affects your feed, you could have a ton of fixing to levels in post. Good luck!

    I hope you like it! I may post a tutorial, but my process is pretty simple. I use logic to apply a compressor and an EQ that takes out some of the bass. That’s about it. Sometimes with video, I’ll use izotope to kill background noise. Simple is better.

Question: if want to film a narrative short film with 4 characters talking in a scene, and currently own 2 wireless Comica boom xd1 lav mics and 2 wireless pico mics (can also be used with lavs). • @ShaunHautly

    @ShaunHautly

    You’ll need three adapters, but it can be very tricky. The h6 has only one 3.5mm input, but adapting 3.5 to XLR isn’t straightforward. Some are powered sources, some are mic level, some are line level. If you were gonna buy a test a bunch of adapters, I’d sooner just try to rent some XLR mics, or hire a sound mixer for the day.

    Great video Shaun. Very informative. I have a few novice questions for you. I just received my Zoom H6 and I want to hook it up to my Canon 80D. I'm assuming I need a SD card for both camera and Zoom? Say if I have your WAV audio settings, will that be the audio recorded on the camera SD card, or do I need to sync both video and audio up in post? Also how do I actually connect them? I know the line out goes to the mic input on the camera, but where to from there is a mystery. Do you have some simple instructions? Sorry for all the questions. I'm new to this and I'm just trying to get to the bottom of it. Hope to hear from you soon.

  • @ShaunHautly

    @ShaunHautly

    4 жыл бұрын

    NO troubles on novice questions! We've all been there at some point. If you want the audio recorded directly into the camera, you can run a cable from the H6's line-out into the microphone jack on the camera. When you do this, make sure you use both the H6's output settings and the camera's input settings to ensure that the signal is not getting turned up or down before it gets to the camera. If you set your levels right on the H6, but the camera is WAY too high, your audio will sound awful. Get them to agree. If your camera is getting the audio directly from the h6, there isn't a reason (other than backup safety) to record to an SD card in the h6. If you want the BEST quality audio, record a WAV file into the H6 and sync it up in post (whether or not you take a feed directly into the camera from the H6). If you're using software to sync these up, a simple "3-2-1 *CLAP*" at the beginning of your recording will help sync up those audio files. Does this help? What pieces could use a little more explanation? There isn't a lot going on right now, ha. I've got some extra time.

    Excellent! Quick question - So Back Up Record only operates the stereo L/R channel. You cannot hook up a boom mic to it or lav mics correct? But audio for film has to be in mono, so how can a stereo track work for that? Thanks so much!

  • @ShaunHautly

    @ShaunHautly

    5 жыл бұрын

    On the L/R vs Boom, correct. The H4n can only do backup recording on that. My RODElink wireless, however, has a 3mm output, so it plugs into the little jack on the back of the XY capsule. Works like a charm. On the note about film not being stereo, I've never heard that before. Film can be stereo, surround sound, and more. If you're only source is a single microphone, that's not "stereo" by itself, but if you're cutting back and forth between shots of people talking, you can adjust that signal's pan setting so that people on the right side of the screen are balanced toward the right and vice-versa. They do make stereo microphones, but they have somewhat specialized uses (live bands, etc). I record my signals in mono, and then adjust them to the sides where they seem natural in post.

    How can I record into a stereo file using an NTG-2 shotgun mic?

  • @ShaunHautly

    @ShaunHautly

    5 жыл бұрын

    This is a tricky question. The NTG-2 is not a stereo microphone, it only records a single channel of audio. You can record stereo files in the H6, but with only one input (a single NTG-2), your stereo file will only have audio on one of its two channels. If you're trying to have audio from the single mic in BOTH channels, the best move is to record a monophonic file and odds are your editing software will know to make the signal come from both channels. Does that help?

  • @ShaunHautly

    @ShaunHautly

    5 жыл бұрын

    I've never experienced that. My only guess would be that your memory card is either corrupted or just too slow. You can check the "strength" of your memory card in the zoom settings under SD card. If you're trying to write too much data to a card that can't handle the speed, it may drop frames as it catches up. Does this happen routinely, or just this once?

  • @ShaunHautly

    @ShaunHautly

    2 жыл бұрын

    Great question! You should record in 24 bit, but if you're not going to deliver at 96kHz, it's unnecessary. It's akin to filming something in slow motion (at, say, 120 frames/second) and you're just going to play it back at 24 frames/second without slowing it down. You'll just be throwing away a bunch of frames in-between the ones you use. The sample rate (96khz) only means it's taking 96,000 sound samples each second. It's not a "higher quality." It doesn't help you record a cleaner sound, or reduce more noise, or make it easier to process later. It's just more samples and if it's not going to be delivered at 96kHz, it's just extra data. That said, recording at a higher sample rate is not going to hurt anything, aside from having a slightly larger file size.

    If your final project is going to be delivered at 48 or 44.1khz, recording at 96 doesn’t offer any better quality, it just adds processing time to convert it later. It’s like filming at 60 frames per second when your final video is going to be 30 frames per second. It doesn’t help the quality of the final project, it just takes more space and processing power. If you’ve got tons of space and processing time isn’t an issue, it won’t hurt you, but it will not help you either. It’s not “extra resolution” or anything.

TYPICALLY (but not always), "crackling" noises are the fault of a bad cable. The moving cable is what makes it a crackle instead of just a hum. So check your cables? Yes, I have an H6. I brought a trs to trrs and I also brought an camera adapter. Neither is working. Both are producing a crackling sound. I only get a smooth recording when I’m in multitrack mode. I’m trying to use the H6 as an interface to record directly into my iPhone

    does the Sennheiser xs1 microphone need phantom power ? I use zoom h6

  • @ShaunHautly

    @ShaunHautly

    8 ай бұрын

    Nope! It's a dynamic microphone. No phantom power needed. There are two kinds of microphones: Dynamic and Condenser. Condensers need phantom, dynamics do not. HOWEVER, supplying phantom power to a dynamic microphone will NOT harm the microphone nor affect the signal. The only downside to using phantom when you don't need it is that you'll run out of battery much faster. :-)

  • @ShaunHautly

    @@scourneene Well, to live stream, something needs to be connected to the internet. Likely a computer or tablet. Sometimes a phone. The audio needs to be connected to that device somehow. It can EITHER be through the USB of the H6, or you could run the line out into a camera that would have whatever USB interface with the computer that is needed. Though if your computer has a mic input, you may be able to use the line-out directly into that mic input instead of going through USB. It's hard to say without knowing your setup.

    Yeah How do you do with that? I guess you just use the other XLRs on the other side for the dinamics? Because and I think this is a bad idea but the H6 turns phantum on in pairs. Not on just 1 XLR like the F recorders apparently do.

  • @ShaunHautly

    The h6 can control Phantom power individually for each channel. I've never heard the pairs thing before. You can go in through the settings and enable each channel separately. And even if phantom power is on, it won't affect dynamic mics save for some REALLY old Ribbon microphones. Anything made in the past 25 years should be fine. And I LOVE my F4.

    Unfortunately, I just sold my h6 a month ago, so I can't walk through it, but what I just read from zoom's website says the h6 can control any or all of them, and I recall only ever activating my channel 1, as that's where I plugged in my condenser.

    colonelshaun Ah I guess I replyed to myself. But Incase you don’t get that. My basic question was how do you power each 1 on it’s own then? Because when I go into the menu on mine I get 3 choices. Tracks 1 and 2. Tracks 3 and 4, and lastly all. There’s no choice for each 1. Or am I missing a step? Now it only matters for mono recordings. But for the most part fine. Power them paired as I use an Audio-Technica AT-8022 stereo mic. Which is 1 mic with 2 modded AT-4021 capsules in it.

    It records in mono by default. You have to link the inputs to make it stereo. And most editing software will discard unused channels if you accidentally record a stereo file with only one input.

    solved it with Zoom's help. So you never saw the pair thing because you don't pare them. You just armed that 1 XLR like you said. So it can tell weather you have them stereo linked or not. If you do then it did what mine was doing. But I unlinked them and wala. There it was just as you said. Note if after that fact you do link the xlrs to make things convenient apparently the H6 apparently powers XLR2 for you. Or 4 if you were using 3 and then you link those. Verry interesting.

    Oh, I see what you're saying. Yeah the H6 is not the best option for video compared to other recorders. It can't sync timecode and you can't select a frame rate. What I was saying is that your best bet (and what I got away with for years) is to make the sample rate (48 kHz, 96 kHz, etc.) match your camera's sample rate. Then you can clap to sync and once you align things in post, you shouldn't experience any noticeable drift during longer recordings. But yeah, if you're serious about video, these H-series recorders aren't the best tool. I've been using the F6 and really liking it. I can send timecode out and sync cameras to it. Most of the time, I still end up just clap syncing as my mirrorless cameras can't sync to external timecode anyway. You could use a tentacle sync system to get around all of this, but I've personally avoided that as it's just extra gear and extra steps in post production to sync things. I find that for most of my interview based stuff, clap syncing gets me far enough. You may want to try the F6 or one of the SoundDevices like the MixPre 3.
