    Hi, thank you. No, it doesn't. It seems the only simple option you have is to buy a portable AC, which are destined for horizontal windows. But, they are extremely inefficient and expensive to run. The only exception is the new ones that have inverter technology. Those are very efficient and quiet. I looked into them before going this route. The Midea DUO is one I almost bought and would recommend. I have a link for that in this video description. OK, I got out my decibel meter just for you. at 6 feet to the side of the unit unit on the inside the decibels were 56 dBA. I went outside on the same side 6 feet away and it measured 64.this is fan on high With the compressor at 100%, which is 1,061 watts. Currently 92°. Standing 6 feet behind the condenser was 66 dB. 20 feet behind the condenser was 55 dB. Not very scientific, with the wind and meter tolerance, but that will give you some sort of idea. In real life, not very loud. Maybe 15 to 20% louder outside, and this is the quietest AC I've ever had by a big margin, even on high fan. Also, the compressor is variable, so it will only be this loud outside during the hottest part of the day when the compressor is at 100%. Hope this helps, I would definitely recommend it, I bought a second one. If you buy one, or anything else on Amazon, if you could use my link that would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!!

Will you please look into this and see if the reports are true and, if so, if there's some way to clean out those nooks and crannies that mold likes to build up in that people are maybe missing? • @HandymanHertz

    I've looked some, but there's no logical reason I've found why this type would be more susceptible to mold. In fact, I'd argue this would be less susceptible, being that the window coming down acts as a barrier to the moisture/humidity out off from the slinger ring (which every ac has). Id say but it. Every ac unit I have had experience with harbors some mold, just the nature of the beast. That's why they need deep cleaned...but I Havnt deep cleaned it this year.

    Hi this Midea U-Shape design does not have a heat option. But, Midea has a traditional style that has a heat option for $10 more when I checked a month or two. It has the inverter technology and also has heat. Not sure how efficient the heat is, but you can look into it. I believe the heat only works above a certain temp, so you're have to look into that as a supplementary option, not primary. I believe it's a heat pump if I remember right.

    I noticed your window looks to be wider than 36”? Do you recommend just extending the bracket to 36” and have it be off centered? Then fill the empty space with extra hard foam insulation from Amazon (saw some listings)? I wonder about the safety of this cause Midea obviously doesn’t advertise this. The other option I saw on Reddit was using some plywood and attaching the bottom bracket to that? That seems like a lot more work but I don’t know if it’s any better than doing the above? Also did you happen to look at the Windmill AC? Thanks for the video!

    Thanks for watching. Yes, mine is 39 inches. So I put it off center and braced the one side like they show. Then I put screw in the window sill with the arms they gave you. (It's actually more sturdy bc I in more screw than they recommend on the side of the window. One thing to remember is that all of this weight is held by the backer, so these screws is just to stabilize it from moving so there's not many forces acting against it. Plus, the window is in between the unit, so it's not going anywhere. I did my own insulation with towels, because it's under an enclosed porch and I wasn't worried about rain. But I do plan to go make it look better in the future. That's just how I did it. I'm sure there are better ways, but I'm happy with my way. Good luck!

    There's probably ways to do it better than I did, but my window is 39 inches and I think it only goes to a 36 inch window. What I did, was slide the AC to the one side of the window and install it like you should in that side. then just screw through the arm brackets it comes with on the other side into the windowsill on the bottom. It's a few inches off center, but this works well. You just need to figure out insulation Solution. It doesn't take much to hold it there. It's balanced and there's no real force against it. It just needs a little stabilization. 👍🏼 good luck, let me know how it goes.

For others reading this, I just screwed the too-short bracket to the sill with a couple drywall screws, and cut a chunk of styrofoam for the extra gap. There are so many places for ants to come in that it doesn't matter that my solution is not airtight. I'm going to be using poison. Midea: What's with all the pointless holes?

    Sure. You have two options. You need to figure out if you want it Center of the window or off center. I did it off center, so that I could use the included bracket on the one side. I also did it so I can use the insulation foam that came with it on the one side . For the other side, I just drilled into the windowsill. It doesn't take a whole lot, as the metal bracket it sits on carries most the weight. If you want Center to your window, you will need to figure out your insulation situation and also drill both arms into the windowsill. Good luck. I'm sure there's other ways, but that worked for me and was simple.

    Hi, this was a 40 inches window. It's designed for 36" I believe. I had to do my own engineering. I used the included brackets on one side and made my own custom way of securing the other side using the bracket but using the holes and drilling into the window frame. The AC is heavy, but most of the weight is on the window sill and the siding, so it doesn't take much to secure it. Also, you have a window in between, and there's not much force moving it in any directions. I wouldn't recommend doing it my way, but it can be done. If you wanted it centered (mines slightly off center a few inches) you can do it that way too.

    Replace the window? Haha kidding. No, I don't. It's more work but a mini split is far superior to this and has a heat pump and more efficient. If that's not an option, I would look into a portable inverter AC. It has the exhaust vent that's made for a sliding window. They are quiet too. 👍🏼 make sure it's got inverter technology, bc the regular style IS TERRIBLY inefficient. Hope this helps. I have a link in description for the Midea DUO. (If you buy one, please use it... thanks) I researched it before going with this route. Not a bad option. Some have a heat option too if you want that. You have a few options.

  • @HandymanHertz

    @HandymanHertz

    Ай бұрын

    I don't see how the design would be any more susceptible to mold. In fact, I'd say they are way less susceptible bc there's a window blocking the outside humidity the AC generates due to the singer ring. In regards to cooling on really hot days, I can't speak to that bc we havnt had any yet. I see no reason why it would though. One thing I've found is that these want to just be set at one temperature and maintain it. It doesn't want to kick on and kick off from 100% to 0%. So if people are turning them up and down, that's not the best. But to get around that (bc I like to do that) is set it way lower, so it knows it has to cool down and use ask its power. I've seen this on my wattage meter. The lower the temperature you put it, the more watts and cooling it puts out.

I wouldn't recommend it unless you've got some pretty good skill. but that being said I would personally buy it and make it work with my own engineering. it doesn't take very much to keep it in place. The support underneath holds most/all of the weight. Theres no force pushing against it, and there's a window that's in between to keep it from falling, just brace it to the sill. Great question. This u shape inverter AC absolutely destroys typical portable ac's in efficiently, noise, efficiency, and initial price. Oh, did I mention efficiency? Lol portable acs are loud bc the compressor is inside (this ones is outside, also with a window in between), and way less efficient, largely because the hot vent tube lets a lot more heat back into the room, and the old style on/off innefecient compressor. It's just the nature of it. You also have to drain portable ac's or run a hose somewhere. You're going to spend 2-4 more in electricity for the same btu's. That being said, there are small fraction of portable ACs that offer an inverter technology, similar to this AC. The portable AC's ceer rating for the midea duo is 12.3 I believe, which is good compared to the 6/7 +- of regular acs, but still isn't close to this ones 15 rating in the video. The inverters are impressively quiet too. The downside is that the inverter ones very expensive 😅 I've looked into them, obviously, but I would only think about getting a portable AC if I truly needed it to be portable for some reason. They take up valuable floor space too. Theres my full review for ya, enjoy haha if you do buy one on Amazon, click any of my links first then search and buy the portable AC if you don't mind and I'll get a kickback 👍🏼 I'd appreciate it.

I originally thought I was going to purchase a regular 8kBTU window unit, wishing I had the budget for the U shape... I could not believe my eyes when I saw this gem at such a heavy discount. Especially since my original budget was 250. Even better, I could not believe how incredibly quiet it is. Texas has been getting hotter and hotter, every year it seems. So, I supplement with a window unit, since my central AC cannot keep up. The best it will do in peak summer is 80 or 79. My last unit was leaking into the house... i think it's due to the wide double-pane window. The water just accumulates in the middle of the window and ends up leaking indoors. Unfortunately, I don't think this would be a good fit for you. If I were you. I would look at the Midea duo portable AC. It has the same inverter technology, is very very quiet, and the venting is meant for horizontal windows. They are very efficient, but only if you get the inverter technology. The traditional type are extremely efficient. I have a link below in the description to a good one.

  • @HandymanHertz

    @HandymanHertz

    Ай бұрын

    Yes, mine is 39 inches wide. I scooted the AC off Center, and attached it on the one side, just like the instruction said. On the other side, I screwed the arm bracket into the windowsill. It doesn't take very much support, as there's not any forces pushing against it. I'm not in love with my insulation results, but others have mentioned that Amazon has some insulation kits. If you want this unit center with the window, just drill through both arm brackets into the windowsill. Obviously, none of this is recommended by manufacturer, but I don't see any reason why it couldn't work. It worked great for me for a couple months.

    Do you think there's any way to separate the inside and outside of the unit for installation purposes? I have a small window space (only 17 inches from top to bottom, including frame) in the basement. This window currently opens as a hatch. If I installed a small version of this style window, I wouldn't be able to fit the fully assembled unit through the opening, however, if I could separate the front and back of this unit to get it in the window, I could definitely close it in there. @HandymanHertz Hey man, just wanted to follow up with you. Costco had a sale on the 12k BTU. Bigger unit for like $90 under what I paid on amazon. I put in for a refund request. Amazon reached out and offered a deeper discount in lieu of a return. it was like another $140 off so I took their offer. I hope that didnt mess up your commission. The install was a little wonky. Normal AC's fit my window perfectly. The insulation was a little wonky. Took me about an hour trying to get it all in correct vs just plopping a normal unit in 15mins. The upshot is... this thing is sooo much more quite. It sounds only like a fan. I can hardly hear the compressor when it kicks on. Also, ive never had a window unit maintain such an even temp in the room. I set it to 71 and the room stays 71 exactly. Not 69-74 like the other window units can do. I got it on 69 right now during the heat wave and the room is just perfect quite 69 degrees. These things are great... and if they are saving me money on energy even better. Defiantly going to switch the other windows over to these as the units need replacing. Def worth the little bit more complex install.
