BEST ways to bleed brakes (one person VS. two person method)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Getting the air out of the brake lines is important but you also want to make sure that you get the old fluid out of the lines at the same time. I use the one person brake bleeding method to get the old fluid out, but in order to ensure you get all the air out, you need to use the two person method. There have been times where the bleeder screw itself introduces air into the system. This is frustrating, and this is why I use both methods to get the job done. Hope you enjoy the video.

    When flushing you can have the hose below the bleeding valve, but when removing the air, the hose should be *above* the bleeding valve, that way the fluid can flow back into the brake caliper by gravity instead of being pulled away from the caliper.

    I once had a bleeder that looked like an IV bag with a magnet. Stick it to the fender above the bleed screw. Air rises and fluid sinks. It did a perfect job.

    Also: Start with wheel furthest from abs - generally this is rear passenger side. Can use 3/16 or 5mm tube. Add mini cable tie at each end of tube. Put catchment bottle above not below nipple height - air rises in tube. If ask for dot 3, then dot 4 or dot 5.1 ok but NOT dot 5 Put cap on bottle to stop water not air getting in. Check fill level of master cylinder once done - usually don't fill to top once completed - fill to mark on cylinder.

    Hey folks at 4 minutes he’s referring to dot 5 brake fluid. You DO NOT want to mix this if your system is for DOT3. However it is ok for you to put DOT 3, 4, or 5.1 in a DOT 3 system. DOT 5 is a silicone based system while all others are glycol based.

    By far the best video I have seen on the subject.I too, like to finish off the job using the two man approach. One thing I think could have been emphasized a little more with the two person part is the importance of holding the pedal in the down position until the bleeder valve is closed.I have been using this method forever, and always had good results, it is quite easy to get into the sequence if you use the same person to push the pedal every time. (My Wife)!Kudos on A GREAT carefully explained, and well done Video.

    It's amazing all the misinformation presented on the internet and even from the one man brake bleed kit manufacturer. I'm glad I watched your video although I already finished my brake bleed. After reading and viewing all this misinformation, I reflected on all the years I bled brakes using two man and the failed one man products and methods marketed by manufacturers. I found the two man method and master cylinder pressure method would be best. Many people don't take into account the many ways to introduce air into the system.

    One can do the "2 person" method by having a means to hold down the pump. Some use a stick or some such between the seat and brake. I use a heavy tool box. Anything to jam against the pedal that will hold it down solidly will work.

    It doesn't matter if the collection bottle for the old brake fluid is above or below the drain plug valve with the 1 or 2 man system. What's important is that the clear drain hose is long enough to have the hose above the drain plug before it turns downward. Any air you are expelling will rise in the drain bottle so you will only get brake fluid returning up the hose when you let allow the peddle to return up again. I put a strong magnet on the bottom of the Energy Juice bottle with a tight hole in the caps top for the hose. Then I place the bottle on a flat piece of metal to prevent tip overs. I follow up with a second flush doing a reverse flush pushing up any possible air in the lines and allowing them to escape through the Master Cylinder. And you don't have to keep adding any more brake fluid.

    Mate different brake fluids DOT3/4 have different boiling points that's something you should know, nothing about damaging something. For breaks with drums you'll use DOT for discs you'll use DOT4. If combination of both DOT3. Always refer to manufacturers advice.

    The Valvoline Synthetic DOT 3 and 4 brake fluid lasts a long time. I recently rebuilt a motorcycle master cylinder- using Fluid Film spray as an assembly lube might make it last longer. Do not use Fluid Film for door gaskets- use Mothers VLR spray instead that smells better and is less likely to damage the foam rubber.

    It would seem like when you let off the pedal air could still enter in past the threads of the bleeder nipple. Maybe not if you put heavy grease around it or if the threads are a good tight fit. But that check valve would prevent the dirty fluid from re-entering the cylinder or caliper.

    I have been using my vacuum fluid extractor to bleed brakes with great success. The strong vacuum and lots of it really pulls the fluid through with enough flow to pull any air out with it. Testing on a brake tester after this process has proved the brakes to be exactly the same as new which is not surprising as this is how they are done on the production line.

    I would say that the bottle can go below. You must make the clear hose loop up, then down into the bottle. The top of the loop must be above the bottle, thats the most important. Also, count 20 seconds before pumping pedel each time, to give any air bubbles a chance to up up first. Bottle can be higher or lower then the bleeder screw, but there must be a taller loop. The end of the clear hose must also always be submerged into the fluid at the bottom of the bottle

    Gravity works, but you got to baby sit fluid level in master cylinder. Starting with rear on right,then left, then after rear wheels, right front, then left front. Takes a lot of brake fluid, patience, and time. But, you get clean fluid and air out of system at same time without pumping pressure. Works if you on your own

  • @kiwiingenuity1677

    @kiwiingenuity1677

    I have done the same gravity bleed but open them all up at same time. It is quicker that way and gives a hard pedal ,only needs yourself and by the time you run out of your new bottle of fluid you are sure you have completely flushed out the old fluid and also the moisture in it. Brake fluid is hygroscopic that means it absorbs moisture. Which affects performance, turns to steam when hot and boils at lower temp. It should be replaced regularly or your brakes can fail in high demand situations. It takes about 15- 30 minutes just slightly Crack the bleeding nipples and keep a close eye on fluid resivor levels and wash off any fluid it is very corrosive . Another cheap way if you are just doing one Brake is to use a trigger off a spray bottle and a rubber hose onto the bleed nipple. It's very quick just block off Brake hose before you start work and remove bleed screw and use a small amount of grease on threads to seal from atmosphere . When you are ready remove clamp . Then just use trigger to pull fluid through the line. You can hear and feel the air in the system, keep pumping it out until it is done.

    Some say that pushing the brake pedal all the way to the floor can damage the seals in the master cylinder around the piston rod because it is traveling past the point of normal stop, and this could cause abrasion of corrosion around the piston rod against the seals. I know the partial depress should probably work with the two man method as you close the bleeder valve in conjunction with working with a partner, but will the one man method work if you partially depress the pedal to the point of its normal travel rather than all the way to the floor, or if you don't press it all the way to the floor with the tube not completely fill with fluid such that on the upstroke for a partial pedal depress, the air in the tube will get sucked back in? Also can you post a link or info for that magnet bottle gizmo?

    One point of contention. Brake fluid sitting around in an opened container, ( i.e. the foil seal has been removed), is hygroscopic , meaning that it absorbs water/ moisture from the air, it doesn't absorb the air itself. Okay? Not meaning to be a "nit-picker" but ....

    I had a first today. I replaced a rear cylinder on my truck and had someone pump the brakes while I bled them. 3 pumps and hold, I loosened the bleeder valve, brakes did not go to the bottom nor did any fluid come out. Finally on third try, a "little" fluid came out. Brakes did not go to bottom. Tried 5 or 6 times, a little more fluid came out but brakes never went to the bottom. Drove it and brakes feel a little spongy. I have never heard of the brakes not going the bottom when the valve is opened. Thanks for some ideas,

    You bleed the master cylinder on a bench if done by the book, then bleed the brakes/clutch once installed. You could also have a lm abs module messing with stuff

    Bend in tube needs to above bleeder valve and bottle below bleeder valve to keep air bubbles out of system. The method illustrated doesn’t accomplish this.

    My problem with every single "bleed your brakes" video I've found, is that the bleeder screw/valve on my car is recessed down into the wheel cylinder. Making it impossible to put a wrench on it. Therefore, the only way to open and close it is with a socket. ...But you can't get the socket *and* the tube on at the same time. So you have to keep removing both, and swap them out... but doesn't this introduce air into the system?

  • @NutsandBoltsAuto

    @NutsandBoltsAuto

    Then use the 2 person method with a ratchet and socket. Just remember to close the valve as soon as fluid stops coming out. The person on the brakes should be careful not to let the pedal come up as long as the valve is open

    @@NutsandBoltsAuto Thanks, yeah that's what I ended up having to do. The problem with that, is that you're just pumping brake fluid all over the place with no hose to container and direct it. So there was super corrosive fluid all over my nice painted brakes, Axel, coilovers, etc.... Kinda sucked, but got it done.

    @@LastBastian yes sir, you make a mess. Thats how gramps used to do it though haha. Wear gloves so you dont get brake fluid all over your hands. You could also get a rag and wrap it around the socket as you bleed the brakes. Itll minimise splashing... And get something to cover your floor. A piece of thick cardboard box would work in a pinch. Ideally you'd have a drain pan under.

What I mean is that when the reservoir went too low before topping it up , does this mean that air gets into all 4 lines at once.

    No, after pumping the pedal your mate has to keep pressure on it, then you open the bleed nipple the brake fluid will be released and the brake pedal will go down to the floor. At this point whilst the pedal is on the floor tighten the nipple up. Your assistant can the now let go of the peddle and repeat the process until all air is dispelled and you have clean brake fluid,. Hope this helps you.
