Graphite always gives more realistic and smoother effects than charcoal. But charcoal always has better values. so the best is to mix both of them at right places.

Lisa Maier I seen this comment at perfect time cause I always did it, and I have to shade in a computer mouse for my high school leaving exam in Design and Communication Graphics, where we had to design one on a computer program and then another part required you to graphically represent it with free hand sketches... and shading is my most dreaded part, I’ll smudge it with a tissue or something

Sorry I am watching this and asking a question so long after you posted this video. but why do you draw that parallel line to help determine where the cast shadow goes? I always struggle with placement of cast shadows and that seems like a fairly easy and straightforward way to get it correct.

Don't watch this because it is all wrong. She doesn't even think 3D while shading. The sphere curls under, so where is the dark cast shadow under the sphere where it ends? Light can't reach that part because of the shape of the sphere but she leaves it there as if light is hitting. Reflected light can't reach there because this is not a 2D object. Also the core shadow on the first sphere is too below. It depends on your light source but, because of the form of the sphere and light direction, the core shadow must have been more in the middle. Again, she doesn't understands what reflected light is, and leaves a distinct value gap between R.L and the shadows instead of more smooth edge transition. Plus, she doesn't understand the fundemental rule of grouping shadows and light families. The reflected light has the same value as the lighter halftones near at the highligt.. which is ughh.. Beyond all of these errors, she puts the shadow line shaped like a circle curve.. The proper way of it should be a more dioganal less curved straight line.. just completely wrong! You guys first have to understands the fundemental science of light-form and drawing before jumping to shade without thinking.. i hope this helps someone. Ask me if you have questions.
