I just scatter seeds when no more frost is expected. They need very light covering of soil. Some sites say optimized germination temperature is from 55 F to 60 F.

What kind of watering of soil do seedlings need?

If indoor planting, it’s better to water the soil first before planting the seed. That can take about 2 weeks depending on your container. When seedlings emerge, just Keep soil moist and water only when it becomes dry.

In my experience, it’s the same. Both method have similar germination rate
