Best Way to Eat & Preserve Basil Flowers When You Deadhead
John from www.growingyourgreens.com/ shares with you the best way to process basil flowers after deadheading that is fast and preserves the highest level of antioxidant compounds so you can get a greater health benefit.
In this episode, you will learn two ways John transforms basil flowers into food that he can eat to get the beneficial phytonutrients including terpenes, essential oils, polyphenols, and antioxidants from his basil flowers.
You will discover why using your basil flowers can give you the health boost you need while allowing your basil plants to grow even more leaves.
You will learn there are different benefits from the younger flower buds and the more mature and even dried basil flowers that you can harvest.
Next, you will discover if the basil leaves or flowers have higher levels of phenols, anthocyanins, and antioxidant capacity from a journal-published study.
You will then learn how John will make a full basil flower extract using basil flowers and organic watermelon using a vacuum blender and a nut milk bag (you can also use a paint strainer bag).
You will discover why it is important to use a vacuum blender to blend basil in an oxygen-deprived environment to prevent the oxidation of valuable antioxidants that can be damaged by oxidation caused by traditional blending.
You will see how easy it is to extract a cold-pressed watermelon basil juice that tastes great and gives you a punch of antioxidants and anthocyanins when processing purple basil flowers.
John will taste-test the juice so you can learn what it tastes like. You will also discover how you can store this juice for 5-7 days by removing the excess oxygen before storage of the juice.
You will learn what this extract of basil flowers in watermelon tastes like and if it tastes overpowering or not.
Finally, you will learn how to make basil flower-infused vinegar by blending raw apple cider vinegar with basil flowers and straining (or allow to seep for months and then straining) so you can preserve flowers of your basil and enjoy them later in the year.
After watching this episode, you will learn the fastest way to process a ton of basil flowers to make a nutrient-dense fruit juice or basil flower-infused apple cider vinegar.

I use mine to make sun brewed iced tea. Along with marigolds hibiscus and geranium flowers
You’re still here! You stopped showing up on my home page, I thought you stopped making videos. Anyway, YES! Thank you for the basil flower info. I’ve been cutting them off and leaving them to feed the dirt. Really good to see you again, I’ll search if you don’t show up again. Your channel is good stuff.
May not have the nutrition your drink does, but I love my basil flowers dipped in a batter and deep fried to serve as a side dish. Tasty!
I use my basil flowers in a cup of tea.

Watermelon sugar high . Watermelon basil sugar hi Lovely herbs 🥰
OMG where has this blender been all my juicing life?! I am going to do this tomorrow as my basil is ginormous and has long strands of flowers and seeds that I would have just sadly have chucked in compost pile. Thankyou for this great video!!
Hey just checking in to say I really appreciate your micro greens videos going back 5-6 years. Thanks!
Have you done a video on Perilla leaves/ Shiso leaves yet? They are extremely nutrient dense and easier to grow than basil and have large purple leaves that taste mildly minty and they are invasive like mint.To me they are a more healthful lettuce alternative and can be marinated and used to roll around food like Grape Leaves or eaten fresh. Asians use them in a variety of dishes.
I’ve been leaving them on the plants so that I can get the seeds. I’ll try this out too
I've always found dried basil flowers hold their smell and flavor much longer than the leaves. I usually dry both.
Oh crack me up..love your attitude.

I love, love, love watermelon and basil together.
I just happened to have some Thai basil and watermelon in the garden and followed right along. Great taste and very refreshing. The watermelon masked the black licorice flavor of the basil, which I don't really care for. Thanks, man!
What a gem this channel is. Amazing work
I didn't expect to be googling acyl groups this morning. I like this John, you should have a plant biochemistry journal club! ;)
I dehydrate all my basils for cooking with later. I understand why spices can be pricey. A lot of fresh leaves can dehydrate into very little dried spices. But at least they don't get wasted.
I'm so glad you're still making videos, sir. Been a fan for years!
Big ass cheeba plant in the back was the first thing i noticed 🤣🤣 That blender is sick dude.
My cinnamon basil is flowering and its so beautiful 💚
I love making fire cider I gave away cute little bottles (cute little corked bottles from the dollar store) of fire cider and basil olive oil away for Christmas last year, it was cute and medicinal 💚
I have been looking everywhere for this info! Thankyou so much
OMG I absolutely love this! Thanks I have a bunch of these growing and this is so helpful!🙏
I love you, my friend. Always fun and educating to stop by and spend time with you.
Absolutely amazing.. 🌷🌷
I've watched your videos for YEARS. What you said at the end of the video about making unique content, I completely agree with. I can't think of any other youtube channel that covers what you cover. If you want to learn, your channel is where it's at.
Very timely as I was debating what to do with my basil this morning. I have lots of purple basil flowers which are so pretty but I think they need pruning.
OMG! I have been pinching off all the flowers and tossing them . Now I will use them. Thank you for this valuable information.
Excellent video. I learned so much!!
I use my basil flowers in herb butters. But I’m gonna try this recipe with mint flowers.
Thank you so much! I didn't know what to do with baser flowers but now I can use it.
Thank you so much for the video! I was also debating what to do with my basil this morning as well. Great video! God bless.
Wonderful video..... And basil grows like weeds.. so easy to propagate..
Great idea, thank you

Me too! My favourite herb ever. The tea is so powerful it can even be used as a hand sanitizer. Lowers cortisol, anti-everything, tastes amazing, protected by holy goddess. Can't go wrong.
awesome!
I love your direction and passion into not only the points that you cover but also your genuine determination to inform others of KNOWLEDGE. Just a Question of whether you edit/consolidate your own Content and since its understandable if you'd rather keep that professional and confidential, I would MUCH appreciate any DM's or emails from such a innocent source of Natural Knowledge. Almost up to 1 Mill Subscribers!! congrads Bro, stay strong (& healthy:) PS, Also noticed that you use Blendtech. Its funny for I helped working with them in Orem when they made a GIANT Blender encasing 3 levels of Dining floors for over 1 Mill xD
Synchronicity ... I just purchased some basil seeds that were offered on sale from a local Michigan seed supplier! As always, enjoying your videos immensely and always learning something.

Thank you...i have basil in my pots and don't know how to use them bcoz my family don't like them in food. But i will try it with watermelon.
when i was a kid my dad use to make wheat grass basil shots with an old chicken feed grinder. He would take the grind out and press the juice by hand. its a very efficient way of doing this too :)
Your garden is amazing! What's your daily/weekly/monthly regimen for it?
@Learn Organic Gardening at Growing YourGreens should look into growing African Blue Basil, because it is the few perennial basil plant that exist. This plant attracts a lot of bees which will help with better pollination.

I have an herb snow dryer it's very good it was about $150 relative humidity stays at 45% has a timer for 96 hours I do my cannabis herb through it when I have access but I prefer the net drying I grow a lot of Basil I pretty much just eat it raw and put it on Pizza hamburger whatever I mix it up with vegetable stir-fry those juicers are really nice I could use something like that I have a foreman juicer but those are out of date have a good day
👍👍👍good morning ❤️❤️❤️
Is purple basil considered holy basil? I am just getting started with all of this. Thanks, John.
Please tell me you have a westy!!!!! Love your shirt!!!!
Is this juicer better than the vitamix?
what kind of juice contraption is that? brand?
How about Tulsi, Indian Holy Basil? I want to eat those flowers too.
Do you ever dry your basil and store in a dry container for later use? Specifically the flowers?
Hey John, totally off topic of video above. What in your opinion is the sweetest Passion Fruit to grow in southern California? Thanks for your answer in advance and have a blessed day.

How is your garden basil so long .
Which one had the highest content of antioxidants?
❤❤❤
Put it in kombucha?
Thanks John, so healthy! Have you tried Holy Basil medicinally? Resaerch study shows it destroys SPIKE protein in Covid19! Also I was researching Black Grass Jelly Plant (Mesona Procumbens / Palustris and reckon it looks exactly like Tulsi Holy Basil. This dessert is nicer than Bobo pearls imho
what, terpines in basil bud? ha, ha : ) … we smoked anything and everything in High School lol headaches only… oh how times have changed 🐸 Happy Fall
Where do I find more about the blender and oxygen extractor and special squeeze cloth?
@growingyourgreens
2 жыл бұрын
www.discountjuicers.com/dynaprovacuumblender.html No info on the cloth right now, its not available. search for "nut milk" bag. Any will work, but the one I use is the best one I found so far.
Hummm, is it still beneficial if we don't have a vacuume blender casuee sadly 500-600$ for a blender is just not in our budget!
I use everything the flowers the leaves and stems I use a scissor to cut into small pieces I plant 8 different kinds of basil
Wait, so the Antioxidants get oxidized pretty easily? Nature surely can be pretty counterintuitive
@Hayley-sl9lm
2 жыл бұрын
It's their job to get oxidized, the plants generate them in order to absorb oxidative damage. We live in a very oxidative environment!
So are you saying if you don't have a vacuum blender, it won't be beneficial?
I want to get Veld grape plant. It’s one the plant which we include in our recipe. I don’t find it where to get it in US. Can you share some details on it?

So it's a bit off topic here but how can I save my mulberry tree?. Someone cut it down it was young and 3-4ft tall.
@sgibau
2 жыл бұрын
Is the stump still in the ground and sticking up above the soil line? If so, it will "probably" come back. Seal the cut end (with either wax or IV Organic Plant Guard) to prevent the stump from drying out and insect damage. Root the rest of the tree that was cut off. I've had cuttings (thick & thin) root in water and dirt with zero problems either way. Mulberry is a very hardy tree.
Top the means just cut off flowers?? Thanks bruh
Where's the link to the blenders ?

I donˋt get the vw tho
from 1 grow I have enough Basil flower top to last me 5 years LOL
💯💯💯🍻
That blender is spendy!
I'd leave the fiber in.
seedless watermelon 🤔
Why don't you just freeze dry it? That preserves most of the nutrients doesn't it?
I've subscribed now 3x they keep booting me off . I never comment this is the first time lol just so you know if your subscribers go down
Tips on growing lavender? I know they kind of like low water and we'll drained, what most plants would be considered abuse lol The fiber is good for you, drink all of it after making it :) I wish my BlendTec or Vitamix blenders had vacuum container options :O
Why you against oxidents? Everything needs oxygen to be
@pesto12601
2 жыл бұрын
He is on a blender vacuum kick the last couple of years.. sold tons of blenders without such a feature before - but now - he believes the oxidation during juicing is not good and the juice you get under vacuum is "better". Maybe he is right.. but I'm not spending another $500 to get rid of my Vitamix... so whatever..
watch out, they will be outlawing basil if they learn how helpful it is... i do not get what is 'hair-brain idea' but i doubt it is a garden term
What's this have to do with the Grateful Dead? Damn that google is messin up!
600.00 for a blender! NO way bro Im a Poor
Should store without the ring on the lid, it rusts and serves no purpose.
Holy snitzzzz that’s a high dollar blender!!! So what broke people suppose to do!? Can’t use that with no power no way 🤷🏻♀️ so next suggestion is??? Then you said don’t need no 600 dollar press.. but that blender is 600 😂😂💯🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ next??? Good info tho.. 💯
