BEST WAY TO DO INSULATION RESISTANCE TEST ON ELECTRICAL WIRING
This video is a comprehensive step-by-step practical demonstration of how to carry out insulation resistance test on an electrical installation.
The insulation resistance test is a very important test that must be done on:
1) A newly completed electrical wiring
2) An existing electrical wiring (periodically), to ensure that the insulations on all the the cables in the installation are strong enough to prevent current leakage between any two of the cables in the installation.
The insulation on the cables are usually of PVC or rubber and the purpose of that PVC or rubber on the cable is to confine electric current flow in the conductor only, so that the current does not flow outside the cable. Whenever the insulation on the cable becomes weak(insulation break-down), It loses it's ability to prevent current from flowing through it and this can cause current to leak through the weak insulation.
THE DANGER of insulation break-down or weak insulation in an electrical installation are:
1, Electric shock
2, Overheating of cables
3, Short-circuit
Insulation break-down is a major cause of electric fires.
CAUSES of insulation break-down:
1. Injury on cable insulation(abrasion) during installation
2. Aging (the strength of the insulation weakens with time)
So this test must be done just after the installation, and periodically during the life time of the installation.

@@BirukWolde-mn6hi Switch that load off. The test is done on the cables in the wiring, not the loads so switch off , unplug or remove all loads before the test.

@@obloni_Electrical ok thank u for your good response
Please i wantw to ask the following questions. 1. Must the voltage always be 500V 2. When testing for the insulation resistance test for fhe circuit must we turn the switch of the lighting circuit ON or OFF. 3. What happens or what do we do when the test is below 2 mega ohms 4. Must the time always be set to 10sec 5. Please what does it mean to say there's a leakage between conductors

1. Ans: Common industry standards such as IEC 60255, and IEEE 43, recommend different test voltages and durations for insulation resistance testing depending on the application. Typically, the test voltage for low-voltage systems may range from 500V to 1000V, and for high-voltage systems, it can be significantly higher. 2. Ans: For an insulation resistance test, you should generally turn the switch of the lighting circuit OFF. This is done to prevent any interference from the connected load. 3. Ans: That would mean that the insulation on some cable(s) is not up to standard and you have to replace those cables. But you must know that there are standards and electrical codes that must be adhered to in every country. so the value “may” be different depending on the country and the application. 4. Ans: Testing for too long with excessive voltage(500V) can potentially damage the insulation on the cables, so it's crucial to adhere to the prescribed test parameters. 5. Ans: "leakage between conductors," typically refers to an unintended flow of electric current between two conductive elements that are not supposed to be electrically connected. This can occur due to Insulation Breakdown.

@@danielteyehuago1633 Technically, Yes but you must note that, Insulation testers apply high voltage (usually around 500V) to measure resistance and this can damage delicate electronic components in a situation where such components are present. Multimeters use a much lower voltage for continuity testing, making them safer for general use. So in summary, for intentional measurements, use a multimeter for the continuity test.

Thank you sir, but I want to ask, how will you know if there's a leakage in the system?
@obloni_Electrical

Before I answer, Please note that, there are rules regarding electrical circuits. And these rules are country specific. for instance, in Ghana, The Ghana Electrical Wiring Regulations 2011, (L.I. 2008) says that, the minimum acceptable IR test value should be 2M Ohm (2000000 Ohm) This means that, if the IR tester reads a value less than 2M Ohm, then the integrity of the insulation in a part of the circuit is questionable. In that case, you will have to do the test on individual final sub circuits to identify the particular circuit with the low reading IR (leakage) If the IR tester reads 0 Ohm, it means there is a direct short circuit between the cables in that particular circuit. So let's say, for instance, there is a leakage between the live conductor supplying the sockets and the earth wire. In such case, the IR tester will read a low resistance value, may be 0 Ohm, 10 Ohm, 200 Ohm 1K ohm, the reading will depend on how close the two cables with the insulation problem are, to each other a leakage simply means that, there is current leakage between; 1. Two live conductors (in the case of a three phase wiring) 2. Live and neutral conductors or 3. Live and earth Please let me know if I have answered your question to your understanding
