The gull wing actually gave the Corsair MORE performance and was one of the fastest single engine prop fighters of the war. It was the first single seat fighter to break 400 mph. The poor performance you speak of was due to nasty stall characteristics on landings. They called it the "Ensin Eliminator" because if you got slow on approach and stalled, it would tip violently to one side. If you gobbed on the power to recover, the torque of the massive engine would be too much to control. Two things were done to correct this. One, a stall strip was added to one wing to help the wings stall evenly and the British developed a better circle pattern to land on a carrier vs the longer straight in the US was using. Anyway, the more you know, lol. Nice planes, even better flying. Keep up the good work!

You are incorrect on why the Corsair has a Galwing. You was to raise height because of the size of prop that was needed on that Pratt & Whitney engine

The Vought F4U Corsair has the bent wings for a number of reasons...but it isn't to save space for storage. Like all other WW 2 aircraft designed for carrier use, it has *folding wings*. The downward bend, or negative dehedrial of the F4U inner wings comes from the size of the prop, and the need to have landing gear long enough and strong enough to keep the prop as high as possible during landing and takeoff. Also from an aerodynamics point of view, the negative dehedrial makes an aircraft easier to maneuver because it has "negative stability". If you look at the wings of an airliner, you will notice that the wings in flight have an upward, or positive dehedrial, which gives it positive stability. That means that if the pilot lets go of the controls of a properly trimmed with proper CG aircraft, it will tend towards returning to level flight by itself. But when an aircraft has either neutral or negative stability, will be easier to maneuver as the aircraft will continue in whatever attitude it is in, and give control surfaces more authority which is what you want to a fighter. But too much negative stability, and the plane becomes unflyable...by a human. Some modern military aircraft have a fair bit of negative stability, and thus need the help of a flight computer to control the aircraft.

I recently watched a WWII documentary that talked about the F4U. The seagull wings were actually to provide a mount point for the landing gear that would raise the body of the airplane. This allowed for a longer propeller, which provided more thrust. If you look at a picture of a real Corsair, it typically has a 3-blade prop which extends below the body and nearly to the a level even with the top of the tire.

The gull wing is because of the size of the prop on the real one. It was to large for a flat wing so the dip was created to help the landing gear be short and strong but give the height needed for the prop to clear the deck. But it's ok. A lot of people get it wrong one way or another. It is a weird plane. But beautiful.

I prefer the way the FMS 1700mm F4U Corsair V3 flies. It is on rails and can slow to a walking speed. I also love the small Hobbyking 750mm PNP Corsair. You can't beat it for 120 dollars as a park flyer that is on rails with the ORX gyro and it is stinking fast on 3s. I learned how to fly with a GWS Corsair. It was a foam kit you had to build and glue all together. The wing loading was so light it was so much fun to fly. It's too bad they were discontinued a long time ago. I love building and painting those 901mm wingspan kits. They flew so well even with a brushed motor and Ni-MH battery.

Now that more RC planes are offering better technology for flyers that want to advance in the hobby I'd like to know from you guys and the comment section if anyone just went head first into flying warplanes and got one as a first or even second plane. Hey Nate Friendly advice, I see at 9:46 you're using full rudder to no avail. If you give the plane a blip of power the slipstream will improve rudder effectiveness but won't cause enough speed for T/O. Always helps to think about prop slipstream VS control surface effectiveness from the extra airflow.

Thanks for showing us these awesome warbirds! I would be interested to see you flying these with a 4S 3200 battery. I already have the P51 but can’t properly use a 4S 3200mAh because the canopy barely fits with it as it pushes against the back of the battery; the height of the 4th cell is in the way if you like to have a CG according the manual. I tried to fly it once anyways but the imperfect fit blew off the canopy of the P51 while I tried a full power pass :/

NO, He is not incorrect, and you are not totally correct, you both are correct, a combo of designs for carrier use. The gull wing was to enable stronger, shorter beefy landing gear, as well as making room for the magnificent 13 foot prop, and of course folding wings are desireable for carriers, even smaller F-18 has folding wings. So, good job, you both are correct. Keep in mind, while flying planes, pilots use less words when it comes to history, even Corsair info on Flitetest video is limited part of history. Did you know that the US navy decided NOT to use the corsair on carriers due to not being able to see the runway when landing? It took the British to figure out the turning approach for successful landing before the US fully engaged the Corsair for carriers.

The best? If you use confirmed kills as a measurement of the best, then the best plane is easily the Bf-109.

The Corsair from eflite has TERRIBLE landing gear! It is crap on a grassy field . The pin that rotates them breaks way too easy.

@@brandonseals6732 have you ever flown a 90” warbird with 60cc gas engine? All I mean is that the foam plane and all the electronics to stabilize flight has made everyone a pilot. Foam warbirds are glorified sport planes. The craftsmanship and pilot skills have been lost. Built a wood kit, put a gas engine give it a shot as opposed to taking out of a box and putting 4 screws in it. I’m not looking to hurt feelings, I’m sure you can fly very well. But just take a look at some old TopGun competition videos ( Andy Gideon) from the 80’s and 90’s maybe you’ll see what I mean. Happy flying have a great day.

Hello there, my absolute FAVE RC channel! ✨🤗✨ I have a thought (OH NO!😯 THAT CAN BE DANGEROUS!) I often have youngsters with me as I enjoy the wonderful content you provide. Often, I find myself being bombarded by some young mush-mind asking me to explain something that is heard from your end. How about you think about making a video that explains to beginners, as in the 8-to-15... a bit older maybe... a SLEW of the things that we who are INTO the RC mindset already know, or perhaps SHOULD already know? Just NOW I am thinking of a phrase that we hear YOU, Nathan, say a TON: KEEP IT SCALE or KEEPING IT SCALE. Then there are good and BAD ways of maintaining your batteries. You could elaborate a bit more on this in that EXPLANATION OF THINGS I SAY VIDEO. I only mention this due to my often-having questions thrown at me by my charges I have running about. Sometimes I am lazy and want a break_ 😂🤣. My fave 'bird' is the CORSAIR... the one I flew for several years saved my life, so I am partial to all her sisters & brothers up there in the air and on the ground.
