BEST WAR GAME EVER | Memoir 44' Review and How To
Ойындар
Memoir 44' by Days of Wonder is a historically based World War II Tabletop Miniatures Wargame Boardgame. Now if that sounds like an absurd mouthful, let me assure you this is one of the easiest to learn, easiest to play, and most enjoyable games I have played in years. This is a game for 2 to 8 players that accurately recreates 17 separate battles that took place across Europe during WW2, and it combines the best aspects of each of the game genres that make it up. Think miniatures games are too costly, time consuming, and complex? BOOM! This game sets up and plays in an hour, start to finish, and can be learned in about 15 minutes. Think hex games overly simplify miniatures combat? KAPOW! This game maintains a level of detail that keeps things feeling tactical and unique, with streamlined terrain, movement, attacking, and defensive features, but also includes special forces, special close assault actions, and more. Looking for a game that isn't just a bunch of plastic soldiers and dice calling itself a historical wargame? OOOH BOY! This game fills each scenario with so much historical information, and goes out of its way to truly recreate the battlefield and units of the battle as accurately as possible, you'll walk away from each game feeling like you actually understand the struggles that took place during this great war just a little bit more.

It's a real keeper. I've yet to have anyone poo poo it.
Great overview! My 6yo is into WW2 and I think this game will be a great intro game with lots of history!
I wish this game was around when my friends and I were trying to play Axis & Allies in the 90s. It was such a long game and frustrating sometimes. This would have been such a great alternative!

So do I. I remember in the mid 90s I’d gather with a group of buddies and we’d play axis& allies. It was a bit messy and games were painfully long at times. We really could have used a shorter game
Very well done! Ordered the game and left a Abo
Very good review. Well done!

Perfect review, and 100% correct. GREAT game.
Easily my favorite "simplified" war game. Can definitely recommend playing Overlord variant if you can print out the map, or have a 2nd base set. (My group uses the desert board and hexes from the Mediterranean expansion to create the other half of the map)

that does not make it a simple game.

@@kosterix123 playing a card that tells you exactly what to do and then rolling dice that tells you exactly what to do, on a map that tells you exactly how to set the game up, is super complicated im sure

This was a good overview of the game, but at this point there have been so many, this kind of blends in with the rest. I would have loved to hear more about what makes this a great game. Your personal gaming experiences. Perhaps ‘light bulb’ moments where you understanding changed. For me, simply put, Memoir ‘44 offers strategic card management, tactical troop placement, and risk management decisions for combat. Combat rolling is more probability based than luck, which can be mitigated by terrain choices.

I would love to deeper dives on individual games, especially some of my favorites, but as it is, with my videos getting near 30 minutes just for base reviews, and taking a week for me to film and edit by myself, adding any more would likely push them into a realm of impracticality to produce and retain viewers. I think going deeper into specific games may work best as a live stream, that way I can just rant about a game in detail and there's no need to rush or worry about editing.
Looks interesting. I’m looking for a wargame/boardgame that has minis and isn’t too complex but also fun. Perhaps Memoir 44 is it. I wonder if there any games similar to this one?
So sorry about your left arm. Ouch!
0:09 out of the box, yes, primarily for two. But I wrote an intelligent AI that feels like a human player so you don't need to harass your friends no more and still enjoy the hundreds of maps.
where can i get this?????
The abstraction level for what is a "tactical" game is way too high for me. Often it feels a little too "rock, paper, scissors". This is a great introductory game for new players tho.

See this guy gets it. The introduction factor and super easy learning curve was a big factor in my review. Lots of people are taking it as me saying "THIS IS THE BEST TABLE TOP MINIATURES GAME EVER" and that's obviously not what I'm getting at. I've played over 200 games, many of them war games, and dabbled in over a dozen miniature games, this is obviously not the greatest overall of all time. I do think it's a great game that could be the perfect gateway to more complex hobby based wargames.
Best? Think you need to play more war games.

You give me a list, and if I haven't played them, I'll try to get to them.
I think dedicated wargamers with decades of playing wargames may dispute M44 being the best wargame ever.

Oh of course they may. Anyone may. Also "best" is a very subjective term. For example I factor in entry cost, learning curve, time required to play, etc.. For clarity, amongst boardgames, I also play warmachine, hordes, infinity, malifaux, guild ball, and even once dabbled in 40k. Now in the vein of ww2, I've never tested out bolt action or flames of war, since they both seem to require a depth of existing knowledge about ww2 to fully comprehend the roles and mechanics of individual units, armor, artillery, etc.. But I'm sure I'll get to it one day. OH and uncharted seas. Man that was a great game, just didn't get off the ground for our store. Made it about 6 months. Loved it. Double oh, CY6 also seems super cool. I love the idea of the altitude mechanic, essentially turning a standard tabletop wargame into an 3 dimensional conflict. Never tried it though. Only watched a handful of games at my LGS.

See stuff like this is exactly why I love going to Gen Con every year. No matter how deep into the gaming scene you think you are, or how many years you've been playing, decades for some, you can always stumble across an entire fan base for an entire genre of an entire subculture that you didn't even know existed. And that's just neat.

@@HowToRollDice Unfortunately because the wargaming niche is so small and knowing most of the current board gamers have little interest in wargaming, these companies don't attend Gen Con. Interestingly, there's even a sub-sub-culture and that is solo board wargaming which I belong to. There's even a FB group, Solitaire Wargames.
LOL best war game ever. You are a card.

I agree this is the best.. the best you can get if you're not too into a war theme game like myself, but want to stretch the boardgame experience and catalog.
