Best Value Hobbyist Miter Saw? KGS 254/216 M 3 Year User Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Taking a look at the accuracy and quality of the Metabo KGS 254 M miter saw and if it is a good option for hobbyists like myself.
The 216 is slightly smaller but pretty much exactly the same in operation, quality, and accuracy as the KGS 254 M. It is definitely a local favorite.

I purchased one of these about a month ago and have found the quality of cut to be a large step up from the cheap saws available. I had to adjust my fence approx 1/2 degree out of the box, which took me all of about 2 minutes. It's good to see a review from someone who has years of use with one of these saws 👍

I picked this up during a Christmas sale at a great price but wanted to wait until I've had a chance to use it for some time before I posted a review. Having used it for the past few weeks I will now say that this is a very nice saw. The motor is powerful and the included blade is even pretty good. The brake is very smooth and fast. The miter is very Easy to use kzread.infoUgkxPeGkHOMe05FySypTOvYumxMn-xi39oRe and adjust and rock-solid when locked into position. The only drawback I can find is that the bevel adjustment only works one direction, which makes you think a little bit when making cuts. All in all, a VERY nice saw at a great price (when on sale). Highly recommend.

I have had the KGS 216 M for a couple of years now, and I am quite pleased with it. I bought it at a local hardware store, and it was actually the cheapest option in stock as it was on sale. It is however my first mitre saw, as I had already learned the lesson about not buying the cheapest option years ago, when I bought my first hammer drill and plunge router. The gearbox on the hammer drill (Power Craft) broke first time I used it, so it couldn't even finish one job. Same with the router (Power Super). I bought it to make dados in some fence posts. The handle on the left broke almost emidiately , and the cheapo 8mm bit (6mm shank) broke after about 50cm on the first post. My dad had to finish the dados with a cirkular saw. The manufacturer even had the gall to write "Profi" on the box of a $20 tool... 15 years later, and the hammer drill has been replaced by a Bosch GBH 18V-20 rotary hammer, and the router by a Bosch POF 1200 AE, a Makita RT0700CX4 and a table mounted Triton MOF001. :)

I also don't like the depth stop idea. I bought KGS 305 model as I wanted to have ability to cut 10cmx10cm, and soft start (without modifying it and losing warranty). The same here, it is super accurate, I didn't have to adjust anything, just checked the angles, and pretty much the same, using it out of a box for over a year. Also I'm still using originally provided blade, as it is surprisingly good, and leaves nice cutting edge.

Hi! I'm using the same saw and very satisfied overall. Two things I'm a bit bothered about, first is the tilt angle scale is bit hard to read because it's placed just below the slider and because of this, find it hard to read the exact tilt angle. And second is that on the 0 degree straight cut (with 0 degree tilt), looks like my saw somehow needs some adjustment because it's not cutting in a perpendicular way, it's off by 1 degree or so, any ideas on how can I adjust this?

Hi Jean, Ive had my Metabo Kgs254M for 2years and it works every day. Recently it started making growling sounds as soon as you release the the start-up. I started researching on what the cause can be for this growling sound. What I found was the gearbox needed some grease, took the blade off, sliding guide and undid the 2 screws holding the gearbox in place cleaned out all the old grease and replaced with new grease. It now runs quite again. I did check for any broken teeth but I was lucky I think because I caught it in time. But it is a great machine. Always listen to your machines they do need maintenance and cleaning after some time.

I have the smaller saw of these. Definitely get the bigger one if you do general construction as the smaller one might not have enough depth to cut through the beams that you use. What I like is dust collection. A bit escapes the connected vacuum but otherwise it's very well contained. The laser is useless. For mine it was off the center and the laser beam is too wide for the precision that I need. Instead of the laser, I just align the marker line with the saw blade tip when the saw is off, then start the saw and make the cut. The blade is very good, does not wobble in any way and I get very precise cuts with it. The motor is very loud but that's not a problem with protective headphones. I also have Metabo 4m saw stand (KSU 401) which works really well with these saws. The height of the stand with the saw mounted is perfect for me (5'10) without causing back problems. The stand is not super-stable, the legs are a bit weak and might take damage when you use it for cutting heavy beams but it's low weight and quite compact with legs folded into transportation position for portability.

I own a KGS216M for about 7-8 years. Not happy with it. The price was good, so it says it all. Should have added 100 euros and bought a decent Makita with 216mm blade. Tried it - the sound, handling, stiffness were like a magic comparing to Metabo saw. Metabo blade wobbles, it's impossible to make precise 45 degree cuts (for example when installing baseboards). Recently I changed the ball bearings, reducer etc. - it was cheap, but didn't change the performance. Later on I'll avoid cheap mitre saws.

I got a crappy version of that saw. Mine is kgs 305 m. It was a big disappointment from metabo. Problems started right at the beginning. First I noticed that the blade and the fence are not square. So i adjusted that. Second, blade and the base were also not square, ok it is adjustable. When I got all set up correctly it was still not cutting straight. The problem was that the slider "drifts" about 2mm to the left side of the base. So if I make cut 305mm using slider the blade forces itself against left side of the workpiece and therefore bends the blade right making twisted cut. So if yo make a cut like 300x100mm piece it'll be square at the beginning of the cut and out of square on the other end when you push the slider all the way back. If you use that saw locked down on mitersaw position it is possible to make square cut. Also the base of the saw and turntable are not aligned, turntable is tilted down to right about 1mm. And finalli worklight and laser went out about 1 month after i got this saw. Blade woble was also quite big on that saw. Left to right about 1mm, but i got that fixed grinding the flange. I have adressed local reseller about these problems and metabo headquarter about these problems, but they said that all those issues are in normal tolerance of that tool.

I believe if you want a cheap saw stick to a smaller blade size as it will reduce any possible blade deflection. If you need a large blade you should only buy top models. I am considering buying the 216 because I can't justify the expense of a top of the range model for the work I am doing but still need a reasonable amount of accuracy.

With the Advance Vac you get a rubber reducer for the house attachment. It fits into the dust port on the KGS254.

Hi Andrew did you manage to find any info on removing the guard cover, mine doesn’t slide with the blade, think the guard slipped back while cutting timber heard a bang and that was it, just can’t work out the mechanics of the arm that lets it slide back and forth with the blade, only happened yesterday 27/08/2021 Thanks from Australia 🇦🇺

@@andrewmackenzie4233 Thanks Andrew, Contacted Metabo Australia about mine, told them the saw is not useable and very unsafe, they ask me to take to a service centre, on which they would review the problem, hinting it might have been a user problem, so not holding my breath, the saw is only 4 months old, should have bought Makita, anyway stay safe, and thanks again for your reply

Hi there, I know this is comment is a year late but I'm curious to know if the 216 has any major drawbacks rather than the 254, seeing as the 216 costs almost half the price. Would the 216 still be fine cutting any type of wood?

Tips. Very important if you would like to saw with precision. (avoid torsion as much as possible)! Always choose a Miter saw with a handle positioned in a vertical line above the saw blade. Everything must be aligned, slide rails, handle, and saw blade,it is much better this way the blade will not tilt. Because there is some torsion in the aluminum housing . And choose an engine with softstart on it to prevent wear of the gear and worm shaft. It is very important that everything is aligned. Here are some examples to show how the handle must be positioned above the blade. Bosch gcm 800 sj / Bosch gcm 8 sjl / Evolution rage 3 / FESTOOL KS 60 / HITACHI C12RSH2 / FESTOOL KS 60 E KAPEX / Metabo KGSV 72 Xact (This also is the case with the Miter saw without the slide rails). If you want you can test it yourself at home if there is torsion in the aluminum housing. Step-1. First you make a saw cut from +-5 mm deep in to a flat piece of wood about +- 20 mm thick. To this with the normal handle positioned on the right side of the Miter saw. Step-2. Then repeat this by pushing the saw blade down with your hand (finger) on the aluminum protective cover were the saw blade is cased in. Just now only do this without the running engine. Step-3. Now you can see if the saw blade will be positioned in or next to the saw cut. If the saw blade is (+- 0,2 / 0,5 mm) next to the saw cut then there is torsion in the aluminum housing. Step-4. therefor it is much better to choose a Miter saw with the handle positioned vertical in line above the saw blade. Conclusion: how further away the handle is from the saw blade how more chance of torsion in the aluminum housing. .

Nice review. I find it almost never pays to skimp on the quality of tools. you generally find that, as you have indicated, the better tools just work better. Myself I prefer a 12" (304.8mm) miter saw over the 10" (254mm) versions, just as I would not mind a 12" table saw over my 10" ... but this is a place where cost wins ... if you are not cutting a lot of 4" + thick stock, then the 10" is probably just fine. If you look up " Fisher's Workshop" channel he has a build vid on his miter saw dust collector ... Also Justin Depew ... both went to great lengths to capture as much dust as possible from the miter saw - as you use MDF a lot, you might benefit in such a small space ( Justin's shop was even smaller and in the middle of his apartment) Keep up the GREAT work and congrats on the partnership!!
