Good vid. I’m have the 5.29’s installed along with the ECGS bushing upgrade in a week. My tacoma developed the infamous front end vibration after a 2.5” Icon stage 8 lift.
Nice, the day finally came!!
Your video was a big help for doing my rear end. Now I'm doing the front today. But since I'm down there I'm literally replacing everything in the front seeing as I have 145,000 miles on it.
Awesome video! Very detailed!
4.88’s with 265/75/16 KO2’s. 2017 3rd gen TRD OR AT. I’ve had them a little over a year or so. Truck runs great. 2500 RPM’s at 80 MPH. Also running OV Tune. Gears are by far the best mod. I should have done them right away.
What a fantastic video! Very informative

I went with 5.29's a year ago after changing to 33's. I also plan to pull a travel trailer. The programmer to adjust for the gears and tires had been the issue. Keeps resetting. That aside, good acceleration, but lose the top end. But still glad I had them installed.

@@Tacomaholic it's a special service you can have done on your tears that basically allows you to skip your break in period, as the gears already come polished so when you change your gear oil, there's no shavings or particulates in your cases. What would you say the level of difficulty is on the front diff. About to do it myself
@Tacomaholic

It's not really difficult so much as it's just heavy and awkward. If you know that going in and take your time to maneuver it just a bit at a time you should be ok ... especially if you use straps and a floor jack like we did in this vid.
how do you like the 488's? Do you think its definitely worth it?

Is this the most important mod for the 3rd gen Tacoma with 35s? What about OV Tune for the trans?
@Tacomaholic

Regear is definitely important if you are running 35" tires, though I've heard that 5.29 is a better ratio for the 3rd Gens. OV Tune and/or the KD Max tune are popular too.
I was looking at their site and didn’t see an option to choose the Nitro gears. Do they just come with them now, or is there another way to ask for Nitro’s that you know of?
@Tacomaholic

I believe they use Nitro by default.
I'm surprised you went 4.88. Is the gearing different between auto and manual?
@Tacomaholic
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah there are a few threads on TW with enough regearing info to make your nose start bleeding. Seems 4.88 is the "best" option for the 4.0 automatic to get the truck back to a stock feel and not have it scream at highway speeds.
Did you do a review of the gears already??? Can you post one up if you havent done soooo...Im want some more inputs before doing it. What was your total cost? There is a place locally that going to charge me 2k for the swap if I remove my diffs and bring it to them they will put in gears for me and I would just need to install it back in.

Depends on the size and traction of the tires you had before.
Did you consider 5:29s? I am thinking about it but don’t want my taco driving like a bread truck
@Tacomaholic
3 жыл бұрын
I considered everything, but 4.88s seemed to be the way to go to get the 4.0 back to as close of a stock feel as possible. I'd imagine 5.29s would put me at about 3k rpms at highway speeds.
Thought if you had 35's they recommend the 5.29?
@Tacomaholic
3 жыл бұрын
That seems to be the route for 3rd Gens but the 5.29 is a bit overgeared for the 2nd Gens on 35s.
I must admit... I was surprised you had a 2 piece driveshaft still. But I guess since you only drive it to the mall it guess it does not effect anything (sorry... couldn't resist since you mentioned it in the video)

So in overdrive with 35s at 70 what rpm are you at. All I see on the internet is about 3rd gens. It doesn’t help because we (2nd gen) don’t have a 6th gear so that’s not the data I want to know.
