    By far, my #1 Workshop Hero for this year is the Microjig Matchfit Clamps - and it is not even a close contest. I made a plywood grid top for my existing workbench and used the grid with the clamps for every project this year: 2 exotic wood cutting boards, dice tower, small chest of drawers, and a case for a Stanley #45 (still don't know how to use it correctly, but I sure had fun designing and building the case!).

  • @startmaking1

    Hi Jim. Funny you mention these. I have decided that long term I am going to go with a track saw rather than a table saw. I have been watching people with MFT s and they seem to user these dovetail type of clamps. they look really versatile. Also I have no idea how to use my Stanley 45. Snap lol

  • @McMonkeyful

    @McMonkeyful

    Жыл бұрын

    The matchfit system works far better for me than the MFT system. My budget version used Bessey clamps & a dovetail router bit to cut the groves. At some point I'm going to replace my workbench top with this system & ditch the T-Tracks & dog holes, both of which are decent but less versatile. I'd think twice about replacing the table saw with a track saw. I watched a lot of Peter Millatd's videos & got all excited about track saw+MFT but I found setting up cuts cumbersome & it sees less use than the tablesaw. Still a great tool for long cuts or certain jobs the table saw can't do but not the game changer I anticipated. Of course, everyone's workflow is different but not all good ideas on KZread work out quite how you may expect. Just something to think about :)

    Great content. I experienced similar frustration with the Kreg universal clamps. I have learned a good hack (by accident) on how to keep them from being fiddley. Put the top pad on the piece you’re trying to clamp, and don’t touch the bottom jaw on anything on the way to closure. I use them frequently now, and was about to toss them in the bin, until I realized it was operator error. Nice job.

Thank you. And thank you for the compliment. Much appreciated.

    i started woodworking before diamond sharpening stones were a common thing, then I didn't want to spend that much so I have been through grinding wheels, Arkansas stones, ceramic stones, finally glass/sandpaper which I liked the best. only after I retired and had most of the hand tools I wanted did I finally get a good set of diamond stones. I would tell any new woodworker to just bite the bullet right off and get and start with diamond stones and then you are set for life, you never have to learn those other methods and I probably spent more than the cost of diamond stones on all of those other methods.

  • @startmaking1

    @startmaking1

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Ugaladh, Thank you for your comments. I was offered the glass and sandpaper to test and in all honesty it looks a good system. A bit more of a faff but effective. I stumbled upon the diamond stones that I recommend and as one of my subscribers researched and informed me I can now pass the info on. Apparently there are diamond stones and there are diamond stones. These ones are Electroplated mono-crystalline diamond metal stones, which is the best way apparently. And they are the cheapest of that style. I do agree that biting the bullet is definitely the way forward for a lot of people and funnily enough I have a video coming out where I say that about a decent honing guide, but so far these have served me brilliantly and after at least a year of heavy use, lots of refurbed blades, they are still brilliant. Though I can say they beat the sandpaper method as I am yet to try. I will, however, in the future be getting a forever set of diamond stones, but everything in good time. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and opinion, very much appreciated.

    Paul Sellers is all about the Stanley #4. I built his workbench entirely by hand and used the #4 smoothing plane to do it. It is the best all-around plane, but it isn't the best for building a dimensional lumber workbench. The #5 is much better at jointing because of it's longer body, which is what you are primarily doing in his project. I recommend a #5 for any big project involving laminating.

    Hi Tom. Paul Sellers is the godfather of woodworking in the UK. He has forgotten more about it than I will ever know. I love his plane videos. You are spot on with what you say. I originally thought that the no4 was the best allrounder, then I got a no5. I love it. The only flaw on mine is that the sides are not 90 degrees to the base so on a shooting board it is not great. But for all else it is amazing. Thank you for watching and especially for commenting.

    Hi Mark. I agree with (almost) everything you say in this video. I freely admit to being an avid tool collector. I can't resist buying a new/old tool if I see it and want to add it to my collection. That also applies to the other stuff we buy to accompany our projects. My principle is that I'd rather have something and not need it than need something and not have it. My number one workshop hero is a DeWalt impact drive. I can't begin to tell you how much work this faithful tool has done over the past 7 years or so. If I were to sell off everything, that is the one tool I would keep. BTW my daughter thinks my DeWalt cordless grass trimmer if the best thing, ever, followed by one of my reciprocating saws.

    My pocket hole system has been boxed up for years now and stored in the basement because I never like the results and my personal opinion is that it is a lazy man's tool. Though, having said that, I will agree that it is pretty good for making face frames for cabinets. The French cleat dilemma, well if you're like me, the differences in thickness came from frugality. Simply, you made them from different scraps that you had at the time. Been there.

Though I have just made a desk for my daughter and as it was out of plywood and will get mistreated I decided to make it easy and use pocket hole screws. they are not satisfying though. You are right about the French cleat, I was using just what I had to hand. As and when I build a workshop I will actually plan it a lot better. Sometimes the color is rather undersaturated (probably because of the brightness issue). If this is a new camera, or a new setting on the camera, excellent then :) If it's just the weather... please consider improving the image quality... The content of your channel is good for a lot of beginner woodworker, especially those with medium budget. It would be nice if you can make the video quality better.

    Hi Nino Thank you for your comment. In truth you are the first to notice . It is embarrassing but the image quality is drastically improved because I learnt to use my camera. In the first place I was focusing very wide and so when I zoomed in during editing the quality was lost. I have tightened the focus. The light and hence the brightness is improved a little as I am using the solar lights more. The issue though is their battery life is only about 2 hours. Before I was faking the brightness using the camera ie overexposing and on pine and other wood the details was utterly lost. I am considering a portable power bank to run better lighting but that is seriously pricey. Thank you so much for your feedback and lovely comment.

    Felt tip marker and note the grit on the visible face?(ahhh later you show a close up). As in CA glue Velcro is a tradename and can get you in a sling "Hook and Loop" (unless it is really Velcro). Here in FL USA, finding older hand tools that are not "out the ass" as my Wife just said is a no go.

    Interesting video. As you clearly need more clamps, have you looked at the Otoro F clamps currently on offer from Axminster tools? I have recently bought some and found them much easier to use.

    I fell down the vintage handplane rabbit hole after watching a lot of YT hand tool woodworkers and I've ended up with 2 x No 4's, a 5 1/2 and even a bloody 7, as well as a little block and a No78 rebate plane. I'm honestly really struggling to get the 4's ,5 1/2 and 7 to perform how I want. I realise this is likely to be 95% beginner issues around sharpening but I'm now just contemplating consigning them (other than the block and the 78) to a display rack and just buying (just!) a Quansheng or even a Clifton or a Lie Nielsen No 5 1/2 so to mitigate the performance frustrations I'm having.

    Hi Tim. I feel your pain entirely. For me , I had 2 no4s, a 5, a 7 and a block plane. None worked so I bought the low angle jack Stanley, then it all changed, that place gave me the confidence to practice and not just the planing but also the sharpening. Once I had that practise I went back to the vintage ones and it was so different. I had developed a style of sharpening that got results and honestly now I use them all. Well not the no7 so far. Your story is exactly why the next video will be about planes. It can be mind boggling. Thank you for sharing. And for watching

    Great video as always mark looking forward the plane video because I fall into the I have a hand plane no idea what one and no idea if it's the right one or not.🤔 Glad see your getting videos back out agree with you about the sandpaper although a just can't afford the jump to likes of the 3m stuff or the mesh sandpaper especially with the amount am using although I did buy a 2" sanding attachment for my drill before Christmas been really good was pretty cheap got pads with it all the way from 40-3000 so helpful think was about 15 quid eBay 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    Michael. Thank you. I hope you are well. Do you mean the spinning disc sander like I use. Mine has been a real work horse and has saved me a lot of elbow grease. I checked out the 3m prices in the UK and its is bonkers. I don't know where to go from the sandpaper I use from Amazon without having to take out another mortgage. As for the planes, I am by no means an expert but I figure a lot of people who watch are at a similar level, even if our projects differ. I hated my hand plane until I realised it was me holding it back. What's your next project?

    @@startmaking1 yea the one that chucks into a drill I bought the 2 inch version been great. Was pretty cheap to off eBay came from a kinda recommendation from 731 wood working although he was reviewing a 2 inch detail sander itself and was about 120 were as mine was 20 and honestly can't really see the difference?🤔 in regards sandpapet I'm using the mixed grit pack boxes from eBay the now granted as u said could effect finishes and stuff but am going up to 400 with most my stuff and it seems be doing orite if the time comes start see issues I'll look different stuff a no mirka do sandpaper but expect itll be really expensive aswell a just can't justify basically spending money throw it away. Just about start couple projects waiting on dimensions for table for a cafe although it'll be a peice to try drive business my way no costs to them and a bench for a barbers again same as cafe and don't no if u follow dainermakes but he's doing pallet challenge gonna do wooden knife and cake board for that. Be worth u looking into it maybe incorporate it into video for channel think there's few British makers doing it a no karlpope woodcraft is doing it. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍 Sorry long reply.

    @@michaelwillson6847 wow you have some great plans coming up. I watch al of those channels and would love to do a pallet project. I am toying with getting a thicknesser for that task. I watched Karl do a great face off against his ex apprentice. Was a great idea. The sand paper issue is really hard, I may have to do a test video but it will be pricey. The next few will be tool videos for a while as I test the algorithm. Oh well

Totally I'd get InTouch with Mark dainer see what crack is with the pallet challenge pretty sure it's just make something has to include at least 1 peice of pallet. Yea a got few bits coming up just trying get name out there may be costing me a in labour and hardware but would rather do that now to get the brand noticed. Oh and that really funky peice of wood a showed u a think thanks to a video a seen from American creator (burnstockwoodwork) bit mental guy but does some nice stuff worth checking out gonna turn that really burly slab into waterfall table 😲first waterfall joint that'll be once get workshop running and table saw set up though.

    Thank you Tim. Sandpaper is complicated. I'm sure others have different opinions but here goes. I use 3m extract on my sander. Seems the best for dust collection and cutting. For hand sanding I use cheap amazon paper. Can't really justify 3m price for that. Plus doesn't work as well folded and without a backer. I also have sheets of any brand sandpaper for sticking to a floor tile to flatten hand planes. I guess to make it a short answer, 3m extract.
