Best Tips Grubby Got From A 12k Pro Support Player

Ойындар

In this video we take a look at a coaching session Grubby had with the position 4 player for OG - Ari. Ari shared some great tips on how to improve and win games, and I thought anyone who cares about improving in Dota would find his insight valuable.

The best strategy is a 1 strike policy. Sometimes you get helpful teammates. But anyone who flames, even once, is almost always worth muting.

I don't mute over simple flame like "don't do that again it's getting us killed". But if they are spam pinging and flaming and stuck on the issue and then they say something like "trash player" then muted because you offer nothing of value.

I like how the tips are more centered around how to play MOBA games as general rather than a specific game. I mean let's face it, no matter if you say where this MOBA is better than this MOBA, you're still going to find some selfish and emotionally weak players in the game. It's kind of how realizing the fact that MOBA's are all designed as a team game, people make mistakes and what's best is to push forward and not indulge in full regret. The best way to summarize this is to _Push Yourself, But Know Your Limits._

Learning specific games/matchups/'the perfect combo' are all just mechanics that you can learn with enough practice/time in the game. Learning about ideas/concepts actually needs some thinking even without being in the game. Kinda like we dont really need to play the game itself when thinking of making the right item build.

When playing ranked I've been stunlocked for the longest time, struggling to choose between having chat on to try and communicate with my team or muting everyone and focusing on myself. I find it really hard to internalise results from particular scenarios because sometimes the matchup that comes up just doesn't happen that often, or I don't play enough matches to have it fully sink in. The aspect of trying to learn from losses and not get too down about them - I find it very difficult to move past because of how long the games take - I don't have that much time anymore to play lots of Dota and sometimes an evening will be all losses, which dissuades me from playing at all. I've played since 2014, and I have a deep love for the game and have made a lot of friends from playing it. But I truly hate the game sometimes too. I really want to get better, but it often feels like hitting my head against a brick wall over and over 😓 Great video, I've been watching your content for quite a while now and have learnt a lot, thanks so much! 🥳

if u mute your team mates , u will rely more on your self to get info, like my core's timings, middle being missing with or without six... muting all and relying on your self naturally makes u better, though it is harder. I have spammed IO for 40 games in a row, half the games, I muted at the start, the other half I muted when people were toxic. I found my self with an extremely good winrate when all were muted at the start, on a hero that is so reliant on communication like IO.

I think the best advice that is being overlooked is Ari mentioning mentality. If you can't find a way to stable your emotions during the game you'll lose focus and you know things go from there. If you're a young online gamer, trust me, mastering your emotions is the key to improving in any game.

The real problem on low rank is that even if you try to explain or do higher rank things they won't understand it or they will say insane things like "go win" or "why a high rank need a teammate" which eventually leads to even worse situation. I still remember one game where I picked slardar as mid against pudge and there was a treant protector in my team which literally started toxic chat since 1:30 countdown before the horn, just because why I picked slardar. I told him I am good at slardar and I proved it by winning my lane and doing 3-0 against pudge also giving my team advantage of that. Treant couldn't resisted that because it was against his ego and started griefing and we end up losing because of 4v5. It happened to me many times, someone's ego gets hurt and they start griefing which always ends up losing the game. So you can't always play heroes out of the box whenever it is right. Sometime you do win but not always even if you give good performance.

In SEA region, not many accept this out of pure ego but the best way to climb ranks fast is to play a full party with higher ranks than you are. But that's just one piece of the puzzle. You have to be willing to learn new ways to up your game as well. And one thing I learned from experience is that you will learn more from your enemies than your allies. It's very counter intuitive but it works. I went from Guardian IV to Legend 3 in less than 5 months. I play as a support for Divine and Immortal players. Sure you can say they carried me and they sure did. But as you may know a carry cannot "CARRY" a game if a Support don't do shit to enable him, especially in the early stage.

His argument is let's say you're 2k. What are the chances anyone in a 2k game knows the correct thing to do? It's unlikely because if they did know, they probably wouldn't be 2k. He says in the video, if you're emotionally equipped to handle the chat, then obviously you are better off listening. But the serenity and focus you achieve simply relying on pings and such is more valuable than the off chance you get a game with valuable teammates.

Generally great tips. Problem is Dota is so hard to solo carry nowadays. On top of that playing "proper" Dota in soloQ is not even the most optimal thing to do most of the time. There's separate set of skills you need to win in soloQ than you need to win in Dota. If that makes sense. Also as highly theoretical as Dota is, I pretty much came to the conclusion that it's mechanical skill that will carry your pubs, more so than your macro knowledge. (unless you support, but then you are heavily relying on others again.) Bottom line is, even if you know exactly what and how things need to happen to win, you must also be able to translate that knowledge into gameplay. Think of all the Tinkers, Arc Wardens, Lone Druids etc. You gotta be able to outfarm and outplay everyone (up to 5-6k) Past that, it gets more complicated, but boils down to the same thing ultimately. If you don't possess that level of mechanical skill you either have to hone it or find somebody else who does so you can navigate him to "carry" your games.

I don't really agree that you shouldn't listen to your teammates. Even if they're at the same rank as you, there's a 50/50 chance that they're better at making calls than you are. Furthermore, players at 'low' ranks make correct calls all the time, there are plenty of other reasons that they may be low rank, a player with 12k decision making won't be 12k if his mechanics are awful. You'll realise pretty quickly which players make good calls and which make bad calls anyway.

why would i even accept to do a "less optimal play" when from experience i know for sure going highround with no pushers at 18 min just cause the team is hyped about taking a t2, would result in taking a fight in the worst possible place (their ancient) and inevitable diving towers and dying 1 by 1? Or why should i accept to go with my teammates 4 vs 5 with no vision inside their jungle with a smoke and no wards, knowning it's just a nosense play just cause' ppl are bored and dont know what to do? Why my mmr is decided by which ppl i get in team? Y'all can all talk how much do you want but this "mmr system" is not right, MMR should be earned by an individual performance/contribution value which takes account of many factors...go check STRATZ impact system and what it is all about, you will understand what i mean.

The tip about muting all chat is *objectively wrong* . DOTA is a team game. As with any team game, part of your skill base is to learn how to communicate effectively with your team. Obviously, if you are getting flamed and is having a hard time coping with other players, then you might benefit from muting them. However, many players (probably a majority of us) would benefit from practicing their communication in a more conscious and active manner. Systematically muting your teammates is just plain stupid i.m.o. Practicing how to engage in effective communication is a vital skill for DOTA, just like lasthitting, item-builds, ward-spots or strategic timings. You have to practice this guys, it is the intellectual way to go. Communication in DOTA is actually a really interesting topic in and of itself. One of my most important observations on the subject is that people often tend to start communicating when they start feeling pressured and stressed. Many people are silent for 15-25 minutes and then when they start realising that the game is not progressing as they had hoped, and then they will star to communicate (voicing their frustrations). What you do as an effective leader is that you *engage in communication directly in the beginning* ; ask how people want to play the 00:00 minute runes, encourage your supports to ward at a certain spot or to remember the 03:00 minute lotus/rune, ask a support to help you secure the 06:00 minute power-rune etc. That way, you get the positive communication going - a normal conversation between normal people. Muting your teammates is definitely not the way if you want to learn how to perform on a high level in a team-game.

Actually, this is a good tip but should not be abused. This is an online game. If you are not strong enough to face emotional problems in the game, how bad will it be when you encounter them in life? For a normal game player and a certain age, I feel that the problems in the game are too light compared to real life.

Disagree. for me anyway, life is easy to deal with. Most things that have come and gone in my life have been expected and are easier to deal with. Aside from a few unexpected situations when ive pushed myself out of my comfort zone or some random life shit. But you just take it for what it is because what else can i do about it? its life. Now dota not so much. its a game of compiled pressure designed to make you make mistakes. its a competition between two teams(Play club sport and its the same). Very stressful and hard environment to deal with.

Honestly grinding mmr as support feels a lot worse every since tome of knowledge was removed. I used to have like 70+% winrate on bane in immortal and I'd do the same thing every game, win my lane, get tome and smoke mid with fiends grip, ward enemy jungle, follow my midlaners rotations and tilt the hell out of the enemy carry. now you're not guarenteed to get your ult before 10min if your wisdom gets stolen and it feels especially terrible if you're playing a support hero that does not have a stun to contest wisdom rune with

About rosh and high ground tbingy. I disagree with him. If you follow your team knowing they are doing the wrong thing, doesnt matter how good you are, how your game knowledge is , you die with them like 4k. The enemy will kill you and take the rosh and entire map. What works for most of the time for me is, I just push the lane creeps to t3 tower and say tp bot or top guys depedning on where rosh is and at least 2 guys follow me. Because usually I am mid or offlaner - most farmed man in the game. The other 2 guy may die, but who cares. They will come back and you will have aegis

Mmr is not just number lmfao, if we talked 8Years ago yeah it was but now it's not. Every team look for a pub star for being invited to their team and high mmr shows that the player have dedication to the game and keep learning

For Warlock in low level pubs? Play him mid. I'm a low level pubber (3k flat). I'm a mid only main (for years). My success with Warlock mid is... rather dumb to be honest for it to keep working this long (57% WR over 120 games). I think it shows how substantial the power creep to the position where he is now. Edit: Owh, this video is support focused. Welp, never mind then. I thought this was about a general advice.

Or could be that I prefer to play unranked with my dota buddies that are composed of aged adults (some are almost 40) who wants to end their day with some good old Dota before heading to bed.

There are two sides to this: 1) On the one hand, I agree with "Ari" - if your only goal is to watch "numba go bigger", then the ends justify the means - a.k.a. - you mute everyone so you can focus on your own gameplay and not get distracted. 2) On the other hand: while doing this can be less stressful for you, since you don't have to hear any negativity/toxicity from your team-mates, it also means that you are too mentally and emotionally weak to take any criticism; it also indirectly shows that you think you are better than everyone on your team, by not allowing them to speak, despite you being able to communicate with them (calling shots and such). Both these are related to ego and maturity levels and I think the DotA 2 community is not in a very healthy state right now, especially since the new behavior and communication score system is extremely flawed and unoptimized. It severely punishes people when it detects "bad behavior", but only ever so slightly nudges you up if it HASN'T detected the same markers for "bad behavior". This doesn't encourage positive reinforcement, which is destructive. Moreover, if you have been reported for communication abuse (whether rightfully so or not) and you go below a certain threshold, this same system will mute all forms of communication. Despite this, you can STILL get reported for communication abuse...while not being able to communicate...and your behavior/communication score goes lower... Maybe this makes more sense to Valve, or there's something I'm missing, but I don't like the most recent changes. The game might still have its players, but if this keeps up, nobody will be happy and people will just get fed up and leave.

did you even watch the video? you probably looked at the thumbnail and commented. Ari makes a good point where say you're a 6k mmr player, you will be listening to 6k mmr advice/calls, you will be stuck there cause that's all you're gonna do every game. However if you mute and just focus on yourself with the advice from anyone over 6k, chances are you're gonna get the best improvement in that bracket cause you're not doing things repetitively.

  • @NoobMicesters

People take shit so literally, he even talks about calls made a bracket. Pings can still be seen chat lines can still be heard, not to mention he directly afterwards talks about listening and making calls. Mute all chat just means don't listen ot talk to anyone, just play the damn game. You don't have to have them literally muted, if they're making calls etc good great, if they aren't and are just flaming etc mute and play. In the video he even says, if they make a call you disagree with do it with them, and if it goes bad, take the fall for it, say its your bad to take mental stress off your allies, despite you being against the play. Way better than you normally see pos 1 carries do. Which is go off do their own thing coz they disagree, you all die because your split and then he blames you for the fuck up... like no shit Sherlock you weren't here. Maybe watch and understand the video next time
