Best things in Gunma Prefecture: Exploring Kusatsu Onsen & Tomioka Silk Mill | Japan Travel

Фильм және анимация

Gunma Prefecture may be a landlocked prefecture but it has so much history and culture. By far the best thing to do in Gunma is visiting Kusatsu Onsen. Kusatsu is one of the most famous onsen towns in Japan and for a good reason! Flowing through the entire town is a number of hot springs rich in assorted minerals that are known for there healing properties. If your one for hot springs, than thats fine, too. You can watch a live cultural preformace and explore the unique townscape.
I also made a stop over at Takumi no sato, which is a small craft village hidden away in the mountains. It's an easy and rekaxing place to spend a few hours and learn how to make some interesting local crafts.
Next there is the Tomioka Silk Mill. This mill was the first silk mill in Japan and helped bring japan into the 20th century. The silk mill also some interesting history behind it, including possible myths about vampires?!
Lastly, just a few mintues drive from the silk mill is the famous Daruma temple. As the name suggests, this temple is famous for Daruma and actually has the largest concentration of Daruma dolls in all of Japan. This temple is definitely ely worth t a quick stop over.

So bummed, I was supposed to go here this long weekend but couldn’t find a car 😭😭 I definitely have to visit, along with Karuizawa in the region! Also stunning drone shots! Weird question - did you find any issues in flying your drone? I’m always afraid to fly mine in populated areas because of people staring, I never know if I’m allowed 😂

  • @leahbell15

It's a shame you couldn't rent a car. It's hard to get to some of these inaka areas by public transport alone. Kusatsu was by far one of the coolest onsen towns I've visited and I've been to a lot! Filming in public never really gets easier. It's always awkward but you learn to just cope with it better over time. As for flying drones, If there is no sign saying otherwise it's fair game in my opinion. However, if you're really nervous about it you can try to check with the local visitors center and see if you need special permission or a permit.

@@miyufromparis she's trying to pull a fast one on you, she never flew her drone in Kusatsu, instead she decided to copy from a video that my friend and I made for the Kusatsu Tourism Association. Our video is called Kusatsu, My Favorite Things... see for yourself. Pretty much all the slick shots of Kusatsu, the quick timelapse transitions, the Yumomi demonstration (notice how the ladies are wearing different clothes) and all the drone shots inside and outside the city are from our video. It's a really cool video and I highly recommend watching it. I mean, it's so cool that she decided to steal parts of it and try to play it off as her own lol

I can't tell you too much about winter other than that it does get a lot of snow, which makes visiting the Onsens in the area all the better. Things can be a little pricey, especially in the more touristy part of town but if you walk a little further out of the city center you can find some mom & pop places that are much more affordable. Overall though there isn't much to complain about. It's a beautiful place and everything is really great. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask. I'm happy to answer.
