You know, it feels weird watching this. I feel super nostalgic, and exhilarated by how intense competing used to be. How hard I had to train and how every match felt like a battle of willpower and ferocity rather than just getting points. Shoot, when I think about it, I bet I would have won most of my matches pretty easily with the new point system. Back then, we got one point for the body, and 2 for the head. That's it. Now we can get points for punches, 2 points for kicks to the body, and 3 to the head ON TOP of spinning kicks adding 2 points to each of those. Then I remember how often I got injured. How often I had to go to the hospital. How often my mom would ask me to quit because she was scared of the injuries I was receiving. How often I would see her cry when I came home wrapped in bandages and gauze just so I wouldn't bleed everywhere. As someone who teaches Taekwondo part time now, I'm glad that the injuries and the danger of competition seems to have become minimized. On one hand, I like that the system focuses on technical skill rather than brutally beating down your opponent. On the the other hand, I feel like WT Taekwondo has lost something in the process. Is it ferocity? Is it willpower? Is it intent to do damage with every strike? I don't know, but it definitely feels different than the way it used to be. I hesitate to teach my students how I was taught to be utterly brutal and mean when they spar. Different ways to cause damage to your opponents so that you can easily win a match against a lower level fighter. It's a different time now, and the intensity has changed. I still teach these styles of techniques, but often wonder if they even still work anymore in the current system of rules at higher levels of competition. Ever since Covid, I haven't had a student that's competing on that high of a level yet, but I guess I'll find out soon. I started teaching again after Covid, and most of my students that want to compete, I've been with since they were white belts. Sorry for the ramble. I guess I've just been thinking about this a lot recently.

Not really... The Original Taekwondo under General Choi Hong Hi was even more brutal. The ROK (Republic of Korea) troops were much respected even by the Vietcongs in the Vietnam War. The earliest TKD instructors were all chosen from the Korean Army by General Choi Hong Hi to spread Taekwondo! Those instructors were brutal and trained you as though you're in the army going for war! General Choi Hong Hi was the one who founded Taekwondo. At that time there were many other Korean Martial Arts such as Kong Soo Do... Tang Soo Do ..Taekyon..! Their military was initially trained in Tae Soo Do but General Choi introduced Taekwondo into the South Korean Armed Forces.

Coming from and having taught old school. I can say that the skill level was definitely better. But it's more then that. We trained with much more intensity. Pushing ourselves to our highest limits. But that all depends on your instructor. A good instructor, should always push their students to be better then them. So this way Taekwondo becomes better through the years. Unfortunately, too many instructors have such big egos. That they do not want any students to surpass them. And won't push them to become their best. And so, Taekwondo becomes less and less aggressive as years go by. And is slowly but surely becoming a joke to a lot of other martial arts. And because of this. Many do not believe it can be effective in the streets. But I assure you, as an old school trainer and teacher. If used right. It can most surely be effective in Street situations. And why I decided to start up my own KZread channel.

For casuals who wonder why TKD was so hardcore back then... it was still point fighting but points would only be awarded (manually by judges) if the kicks land with a loud/strong impact on the body and head. There was none of that sensor shit where just a touch on the body vest/headgear is enough to generate points. Old school coaches also taught their students to ‘fight’ and not just score points to win

Everyone is fighting about how much better old school tkd is than the new one, but one thing a real taekwondo player knows even in the internationals, old school players will just get pummeled by the new school players with points, and they only have 10% chance of knocking out the new school players. Edit: i said this because all of you are not getting ashamed of yourselves, i dont hate both styles, for me, the one who is smarter and stronger is the best.

And same go to muay thay. They use to have broken glass mixed to knuckelss and no boxing cloves. And they did not end the fight untill other one was not aple to fight anymore. Modern times ALL of martial arts have changed to not be so brutal as they use to. They are sport know and actually its better that way.

@@jb9006 I received a brown belt from Cha Sok Park in 1976. With that said it is my opinion that western boxing is a much more practical skill for street than old school TKD or most Japanese Karate. Old school TKD had no head movement as well as no concept of keeping your hands up and covering your head. Give the fighters in this video some basic boxing training and they would be much more functional fighters. TKD always was too reliant on kicks in my opinion.

Koreans wanted to make Taekwondo an Olympic sport. They chose to become an Olympic sport. So Taekwondo focused on kicking Because similar sports are not chosen as Olympic sports. Taekwondo has become an Olympic sport now because of that dream, but its development as a martial art has stalled. However, Taekwondo kicks that come out from time to time in MMA or UFC are a brilliant and powerful lethal move. Koreans made a lot of colorful kicks when they made Taekwondo. These kicks are a gift from Koreans to the world today.
