Also to actually contribute here… the dash in Link to the Past redux. I would have EATEN THAT UP as a kid! Dashing was something I’d just mess around with when I got the boots for the first time lol

Think they had that in the GBA port as well, and it sounds neat, but by the time you get the flute, dashing isn’t even quite as advantageous for traveling.
Super Metroid Redux includes an optional widescreen version and there are a few FFVI compilation patches so you don't have to download all 200+ manually.

I'm working on an addendum patch for A Link to the Past Redux which adds several things. (1) The ability to skip the title screen. (2) A functional shovel in the overworld. (3) The 1/4 Magic Meter upgrade, which was dummied out of the original game. (4) Silver arrows increase firing speed. (5) A shortcut is added between the castle moat and the smithy once you have the gloves. ShadowOne333 has been very supportive of this effort. I'm just trying to debug #2 right now. EDIT: Oh yes, also you will get full hearts on startup.

To paraphase a comment elsewhere "Google Mail achieved perfection in 2008. Everything after that was technology bloat making it worse." Sometimes a project is fully done.
That Arcana patch also essentially restores the original name of the game. The JP game is called Card Master: Seal of Rimsala, so it's a nice touch to do that.
There are also slowdown fix/improvement patches available for U.N. Squadron, Axelay, The Adventures of Batman and Robin, Aladdin, F-Zero, Super Street Fighter II, and Super R-Type.

Arcana: Seal of Rimsala, Breath of Fire: War of the Goddess, and Super of Mana: Turbo are all extremely excellent improvements and I recommend all 3. I will say (and surprised it wasn't mentioned) that Secret of Mana Turbo also adopted the Secret of Mana Reborn translation which, in my opinion, really makes the game. The SAP team really a fantastic job with the translation and nearly doubled the memory for just the script. They absolutely should could get credit for his amazing the game is.
@blossom357

Looking at its list of features, Secret of Mana Turbo doesn't make any attempt to fix the major thing that makes the game a janky unplayable mess. There really needs to be something done about that hilarious magic system. The entire game boils down to "Stun the boss with magic, because if you don't, they're just going to stun you with magic." The game is terrible just for this one design choice. Great music, great art, decent melee combat, but the magic is trash.
@autumnshinespark

I'm planning on playing BoF1 War of the Goddess next. Glad you liked Seal of Rimsala!
I always have to tip my hat to these folks. Keep it everybody, The gaming world always owes you a great debt of thanks.
Super Metroid Redux is a patch I always use whenever I wanna revisit Super Metroid. It doesn't completely overhauls the game, but it makes the necessary adjustments to make it fit more in line w the rest of the series.
I've been wanting to do a playthrough of Chrono Trigger lately, so that bugfix and uncensoring patch seems right up my alley. Always enjoy a different approach to a classic, even if it's just something minor; adds a whole new layer to the experience.
I'll have to check out that Breath of Fire patch, i played that game too much as a kid. I cant play BoF2 without the retranslation patch (basically patches the game into its GBA version) along with a slightly lowered encounter rate and a slightly raised exp and zenny drop rate.
@Charles.Wright

I'm pretty early into my first playthrough of Breath of Fire, and it's pretty rough. Been grinding levels in this first dungeon at 4x speed but still... I can't play at 1x because the movement is too slow! Might just start over with the patch.
Sin of Mana also reworks equipment entirely and adds pretty cool attributes to weapons, armour and accessories so you have reasons not to go for the biggest numbers available. That's a neat feature I wish was included in the remake.
@michaelsong5555
2 жыл бұрын
The problem with that is, you don't know what they do. No description, no nothing. And that includes boss patterns. Some bosses are impossible to beat, unless you specifically know what to do (Dolan), and there are no hints on how to beat those bosses within that game. It's good if you want some challenge, but it's so different than the original game. Having said that, it also has one of the best improvement for that game -- the run button in battle. So much better.

@@ElChocoLocoDeLaVega True, but we all know that in-game things are what really counts. There were several traces that the original game wanted to implement that, but they couldn't find the space to do that make all sorts of descriptions, which is why they ditched the "creativity" parts of the equipment, and simply went with stat boost.
My man, SNESDrunk, thanks for making these type of videos, keeping old games alive and fun for everyone! I was actually curious, what would you think would be an improvement patch for games like Demon's Crest? Maybe a stamina bar for your flight (like the gargoyle's quest games) and some balancing for the spells and potions?
@SNESdrunk
2 жыл бұрын
That would be exactly what I'd implement, yeah. Plus some tweaks in the level design/structure to reduce the amount of backtracking
Fire emblem PLUS for GBA has been a good set of reduxes. Visible health bars, danger zones, fixed growth system, hard mode unlocked already, etc. Good stuff, 9/10 would recommend.
Thank you for highlighting these! Really helps with so many patches out there, and now that my household is moving to Everdrives and Retroarch, we can set up specific games for each!
What a great way to end my 12 hour shift. Snes drunk and chill
To be fair to you, it is a newer hack, but Enhansa Edition is the one that should have been featured for Chrono Trigger. I'm bad at elevator pitches, so I'll let the hack's main page do it: The inspiration for the mod was, "What if Hypno Wave was actually useful?" and from there it spiraled out of control to rewriting enemy AI, redesigning items and equipment, redesigning Techs, and more. There is a much greater emphasis on status effects in battle, with full functionality restored to unused statuses and many new ways to apply them.
Aw, Super Mario Kart's uncensored patch deserves a shout-out, it makes the game even better by letting you race the Special Cup on 50cc and like its name, Bowser and Peach's victory poses are now uncensored. It's small, but really great.
@autumnshinespark

@@autumnshinespark Peach and Bowser are supposed to drink from the bottle in their victory poses, but in NA and Europe, it's changed to them either playing with the bottle (Peach) or just holding on to it (Bowser). The patch reverts them to the Japanese originals.
That Breath of Fire patch looks like a game changer. I remember enjoying the gameplay of that game when I first played it, but the story completely bounced off of me without leaving an impression, and the menu navigation was a pain in the ass because of how poorly translated items were. (Also seems they hit a bit of a compromise on delocalizing Karn's design. Looks more like the original design while attempting to not look like blackface... I mean, I think they should have avoided coloring his lips at all if they completely wanted to dodge that problem, but this is definitely a marked improvement on his original look.
@kwizzeh

I highly recommend it with the addendum patch that doubles XP and Zenny rewards (this is probably only one of good things the GBA version did). It's probably the best way to play BoF1 now. All it's missing is the GBA portraits since I'm partial to those lol
Don't get me wrong,i love seeing people are taking time out of their day to update Super Nintendo games, NES games ever Genesis games. I think it is absolutely wonderful. I'm poor and I just don't have a computer and Ive never owned one. Even though I'm 41 years old, believe it or not I've just never had a computer. I love these videos about rom hacks, fan translations, and all the other fan projects that sit along the fringe of classic gaming, so I hope you keep making videos like this.
Great vid. For those who didn't know. Reason some games were slow(or Zelda oot) was the countermeasures used to stop renters. Best example was ninja gaiden 3 horrendous difficulty. You could beat ocarina of time in 2\3 hours casually if it wasn't for the text slog or skip cutscenes. Not a problem nowadays.

I loved Chrono Trigger - Schala Edition. Added some meaningful quests related to Schala and cleaned up some other stuff. After playing the original so many times, Schala Edition is the only way I wanna play it now.
Damn, I had no idea there was a Clock Tower patch! I played that game a lot trying to get all the endings, the stairs were annoying but there was something ominous about going up so slowly, kind of the doors and stairs in Resident Evil. Thanks a lot Drunk!
Just finished a playthrough of Arcana with the Seal of Rimsala patch. It's mostly good, but there is a major bug in the last chapter. A common enemy (Bishop) softlocks the game every time it attacks. Also, you can't run from them, even with Fog cards. It took many save/loadstates to get through. The Bishop Bug is really unfortunate, because I liked the mod overall.

Love the smell of improvement patches in the morning. You too have a great rest of your day man.
The L/R buttons for "A Link To The Past" is definitely something that should have been in the original game. It makes perfect sense to have those buttons scroll left and right among the items, and it doesn't sacrifice any other functions.
I like how the Macross hack kept the “Configlation” menu intact
Great video! Never knew the Harvest Moon one existed and I've been registered on romhacking for something like 11 years now(?) Two patches that released somewhat recently which were very useful: FF3/6 had a patch released where you can toggle random battles via the menu. Jurassic Park on SNES had a .sram (save file) functionality added which, in my opinion was grossly necessary. Also, I was legitimately waiting to be jump scared on your outro. xD

I don't know why people have this much issue with admitting some changes make games easier. Widescreen on Super Metroid definitely makes the game easier, being able to control the dash on ALttP makes the game easier and is clearly not how the mechanic is supposed to work. But it can make the game more fun, and people playing with those patches probably already played the games half a dozen times, so who cares that it makes the games easier?

A caution for this, that I posted on its own comment: There is an enemy in chapters 4 and 5 called Bishop, who freezes the game when attacking your party nearly every time. They are quite common, making this a difficult issue to overcome. You will want to use save-states or you will have an awful time trying to complete it. It's doable without, but aggravating. I suspect the creator, Sarah Shinespark, will address it at some point (it is listed in her known bugs), but as of now it is the only flaw to this romhack. Besides that, it is a fantastic game with Seal of Rimsala attached and I generally recommend it, so beware! I do recommend playing it, but this is a need-to-know.

These sorts of patches do a great job illustrating how beloved these old games are. Thanks to the efforts of fans who dumped the ROMs online, and people taking the time to dig through them, we can tweak and mod the classics in ways that they were never designed for. If something's great, why not make it better, and if it's perfect, there's no other way to improve it than to have more!
