Also an army medic and civilian paramedic - always in my pocket (can't get lost). Also - a stethoscope is a great way to get choked out by a combative patient, so there is that. I have used a master classic II for 6 years and think its great, but upgrading since I need something that supports pediatrics better. My wife uses a classic III as a pediatric resident and likes it overall.

I have the Littmann III Classic. This is my second week of OB clinicals. I had Mother/baby last week and loved that tiny stethoscope. The sounds were so clear. When I did ED clinicals I fell in love with the Littmann cardio stethoscope. No flipping and the lung and heart sounds were ridiculously clear. One day I will spend my funds to purchase one. At clinicals I usually have my stethoscope in my pocket with alcohol wipes. However, it is really inconvenient when I'm asked to perform a task that requires it and need to use it quickly. So I'm reconsidering placing in back around my neck for quick access.

I have the Littman Classic III in all black and I really love it❣️ I am now a second year nursing student, I bought and used my littman during the second half of my first year and it made a huge difference. Before I bought the littman I was using a steth that just came with my sphygmomanometer and to be honest I was really having a hard time practicing with it. Even though littman is a bit on the pricey side, I have no regrets. The all black classic III looks really sleek and unique at the same time, that’s why I got mine in that color. I was also considering about buying a cardiology IV as an option as well, but at that time I just felt it’s too expensive and maybe I can make use of the classic III more since I’m still a nursing student. Anyways, thank you for a great video and review about these steths, definitely a good reference in buying stethoscopes❣️

Classic Littmann III is perfect for nursing students! I don't wear it around my neck because 1. It can irritate my skin from running around and 2. It can swing and get in the way of patient care. The cardiology IV is a great stethoscope but sometimes lack of experience makes it more difficult to figure out the nuances of different sounds so I agree better suited for later or as a provider. Thanks for another great video! Always enjoy hearing your insight!

A stethoscope is a good investment, it is also one of the few tools that can potentially last a lifetime. I agree that it also depends on what your goal is, providers will require a tool that can detect finer sounds (e.g., need a finer tuned stethoscope) as opposed to what can be detected with a $20 stethoscope. A Master Classic II or a Cardiology series are always good to have. I would also recommend having a cheaper stethoscope as well, in case anyone needs to use it they can borrow the cheap as oppose to using your own. I wouldn't advise lending your own as a way to prevent any accidental theft or misplacement. I have always loosely rolled the stethoscope to fit inside my scrub's pocket, I don't know anyone who wears their stethoscope around their neck all day; it's uncomfortable, not to mention sweaty and itchy (that might be my dermatitis).

When I worked on the floor I would assess my patients then just leave it at the desk and use it again if I needed it. Now that I work in the ED I wear it around my neck all the time but try to take it off in between patients more d/t the weight especially after upgraded to the cardiology IV.

I started with an MDF MD ONE through school and my initial months of work as a full fledged nurse. It was great for heart and lungs sounds, but lacked so much in the bowel sound arena. I work a GI unit, and we get so many patients with near-silent gut sounds, I needed better. I now use a Littman Cardiology IV, and it blows my old MDF out of the water. Both are solid options though!

I really appreciated the side by side of the 2 choices. Even though I don't intend on being a NP, I work in an outpt dialysis and most of the time I am the highest level of medical professional in the building and the medical providers that I am consulting with are having to use my assessments in order to give verbal orders over the phone. I'm always listening for crackles in lung sounds and changes in heart rate and rhythm and or pleural friction rubs/pericardial friction rubs. I have been eyeing the cardiology IV for a little while and I think I may pull the trigger on it and get one.

My school was gracious enough to gift us an MDF stethoscope - thankful but hated it to no end (couldn’t hear a thing); since I was in an ABSN and had a plan to become an NP and work outpatient as an RN, I did buy my Littmann cardio stethoscope on sale on Black Friday on Amazon. Love it and I’ve heard murmurs on newborn infants in my peds rotation with it; I’ve even diagnosed older adults with murmurs as a student and referred out; won’t trade it it for anything else.

I've always worn my stethoscope around my neck. From the time of nursing school,. all the way to now that I'm an NP. It's never bothered me at all. I used a cheapo stethoscope in nursing school (came with a pocket organizer for $20) and once I graduated and was working in the CTICU upon graduating, I bought a Master Classic II (I knew I wasn't going to deal with pediatrics) and then shortly after I splurged and got the Master Cardiology (which I only keep at home as a backup and to assess family members). My Master Classic II has been going strong since 2005, just had to repair the rim a few months ago.

also make sure you price compare sites that have free engraving vs $10 for engraving. usually the "free" service are $10 (or more) more expensive because they include the engraving in the price (from my observation) so if you're not going to actually engrave it.... it'll probably be cheaper elsewhere. Etsy has very nice hand made metal stamped stethoscope ID tags for sale at affordable prices (>$10 + ship).

It looks like some of them come with ear pieces in varying sizes... if stuff like that bothers your ears best advice I can give is finding the closest as-comfortable-as-it-gets fit and just periodically wearing it until you adapt to the feeling a bit better. Smaller lighter earbuds may help your ears adjust. Gummy's and Jlab's are my favorite earbuds, and they come in sizes small enough even my 9yr old can wear them comfortably. Best of luck and hope you find a solution that works!

My mother-in-law just bought my stethoscope for nursing school as a gift. She is a nurse and said I would want the Cardiology IV since my goal is to ultimately become a NP. I’m nervous that I should have gotten the Classic 3 instead 😬 should I send it back and get a new one?

I think they are supposed to last 10 ish years. But I forget lol. You can replace some parts suhc as the earpieces as needed or the tubing, etc if something happens to it.

Hi there! I’m in my last semester of NP school, but I’ve had my Master Cardiology since I started as a bedside RN. I got the Master Cardiology because when I was a new grad in a noisy, busy Emergency Room, I was having trouble hearing with my Classic III. So, something for RNs to consider, especially in the Emergency Room. Just my two cents! Great video and thank you for all of your videos! I enjoy them!

Hi! Late to the party, but, I was wondering if you recommend a Cardiology IV for a pediatric nurse?

  • @NurseLiz

It might be a little overkill. I always recommend the classic. It's what I used. The Cariology would be fine, but why pay more when you don't need it, you know. Stethoscopes tend to wander and I didn't want to lose it 😅

@@NurseLiz I got this comment after I had already purchased the Cardiology IV and wouldn’t you know that I never use it 😭 Covid regulations has us just using disposable stethoscopes per patient. Bummer. But thank you for responding and loved the video ❤️

SHOULD A STETHOSCOPE BE HUNG AROUND YOUR NECK? Personally I don't like anything even a tie around my neck, what more a heavy stethoscope🤔, hahaha. According to the manufacturers, the stethoscope shouldn't even be on your neck. All those oils from your skin damage its tubing and reduce its lifespan. So no one - neither you nor the scope - is comfortable.

I like the overall video but saying that a nurse doesn’t need a cardiology iv because they don’t need to diagnose lung sounds or heart tones is a pretty closed minded view. Why would a nurse not want the best tool for the job, that will ultimately get the correct treatment faster?
