    I was surprised that the 55 grain 5.56 did not penetrate. I shot my AR500 plate with 55 grain 5.56 through an 18 inch barrel with a suppressor at about 75 yards, and it went through like a hot knife through butter. Of course that round with that set up is approaching 3500 FPS.

    55 grain usually only travels at 2950 to 3100 with a 20 inch barrel. 3500 is insanely fast, that's not normal. That had to have been a handload. It's also well known that you need level 3+ or level 4 to defeat very fast 5.56. Most level 3 only stop up to 3000 fps and are usually better against 30 cal rounds.

  • @nymeriagloves3957
    @nymeriagloves39576 жыл бұрын

    it would be neat to take a 22-250 in place of 5.56 and 30-06 in place of 308 and handload fmj's in 100fps increments just to see how close its cutting it to passthrough.

    Those 'intentionally placed shots' are called 'scientific method'. While this may seem impressive on the surface, there's a reason armor testing is done the way it is. This stuff looks good, but are you really willing to bet your life, on a KZread video? I would like to see him test multiple plates, with more controlled conditions. I don't expect him to build a ballistics lab, but he can do better than just shooting at a plate hanging in front of a barrel.

    I don't know about wearing level 3 armor. The rating requirements suck and I'm sure there is quality variance between manufacturers but I shot a steel level 3 plate using an AR-15 with a 16" barrel from 30' and I did not like the results. The plate stopped .223 55gr HP and 5.56 62gr green tip without even denting the back, but cheap Winchester 5.56 55gr FMJ target ammo blew right through, every shot. AE 5.56 64gr tracer penetrated deep enough to dimple the back of the plate with one dent exhibiting a small crack so it damn near went through. Cartridges like Winchester 5.56 55gr FMJ range ammo are some of the most common likely to be shot out of an AR and they make butter out of level 3 steel plates.

    I would have like to seen how many shots it takes to destroy that body armor. Just in case somebody has a full auto or a bump stock on one of their rifles. I know that a lot of times if Body Armor gets hit in roughly the same place it will penetrate. It seems like you shot kind of all over the place and not so much in one specific area. Also how many rounds would it take for a 308 to destroy that plate? Or just a 30 caliber projectile in general

    He did m193; m193 is about the most threatening 556 you'll encounter. He needs to test it with controlled shot placement and a 20" barrel. Also needs to test more than one plate and properly mount it to something, before I'll trust it against anything but pistol. Just not worth the risk.

Because of velocities, it does sometimes do better penetration wise than the blackout or the Socom, depending on the loads used. I reload so I could rig some rounds to make the 5.56 "win", but that is pointless.

    This "spall liner" product is completely pointless. Bullet fragments primarily skate along the face of a steel armor plate, splattering perpendicular to the path of the bullet and parallel to the plane of the plate itself in all directions, cutting through the edges of the plate pocket in your plate carrier to hit your outstretched arms, your neck, chin, face, thighs, groin/genitals, depending on your bodily posture when the offending bullet strikes the armor plate. Spall liners need to wrap around the edges of a steel armor plate in order to be effective, with those edges being the most reinforced or heavily layered part of the liner's kevlar/aramid composition. A "spall liner" that is just a pad sitting on top of the strike face of a steel armor plate will do absolutely nothing useful.

    imechanica.org/files/spall-I_0.pdf PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, EVERYONE if you have a layer of soft armor. Please place it BEHIND the plate. You will be FAR FAR MORE THANKFUL to catch anything going through the plate and reducing blunt force trauma. The plate you tested is ment to catch and reduce any FRAGMENTATION anyway. Also, we should touch on something else. FRAGMENTATION is what your trying to reduce. SPALLING is something completely different. Spalling is something very very specific. Spalling is specific to the material ON THE PLATE that comes off and becomes a projectile AFTER an impact. SPALL IS ABSOLUTELY NOT "bullet fragments that fly in every direction after an impact" Ask ANYONE who has served as a tank gunner/commander etc. When an incoming round impacts the tank its the SPALLING from the metal on the tank that is the issue. Please stop using Incorrect terms and while that kevlar pad may be sold to do what you used it for, it ABSOLUTELY works better if used behind the plate.
