You make it seem like it was on purpose. When creating the Gen 2 gyms, Gamefreak obviously picked 8 Pokemon types that weren't used for gyms in Gen 1. And unfortunately for Chikorita, the Water, Rock, and Ground types were already used for gyms in Gen 1. Granted I will admit, they didn't have to make it so the first two gyms were strong against Chikorita but I'm sure they not only did it for a difficulty spike like they did with Charmander but also because the Flying and Bug types are both relatively easy types to battle against early in the game. They're not gonna start a game with a Ghost, Dragon, or Ice gym.

Given how these games are designed, Totodile is the balanced option, being moderate in both regions. Not super excelling but not super hindered either based on types alone, excluding movepools. This is less of a problem than with Kanto's fire starter. In Kanto you dont find much useful fire types untill too late, and most of the fights where fire is good have protection against other types (like Erika's team being more than half grass/poison). Johto is way easier to play around, since you probably have a Flying type for bugsy and when Ice and Steel comes it's already too late in the game and you can have lots of counters from other places.

Mikey, we need more shorts Contant I love the channel and I’m gonna ask again. Can you make a video giving each character of your KZread channel a Pokémon team please
Totodile's Rage carries GSC early game, it gets Ice Punch in Goldenrod City and Surf in Ecruteak City. I think both Totodile and Cyndaquil (who can learn Thunderpunch as a Typhlosion though I often use Ampharos as my Electric Fire user) are equally good. Chikorita is for the harder playthrough only (and that's sad).
The chickorita line is my favorite starter line. I grew up with Jurrasic park and seeing my boi chickorita turn into a big giant plant eating dino boi is too good.
For Gen 4, I'd still give it to Cyndaquil. You get access to Fire Blast (or Flamethrower if you want to grind) before you fight the third gym leader. For Totodile, you don't get access to Aqua Tail or Waterfall into you near the Elite Four. Also, Lapras is an option you can catch for Water/Ice coverage.

Don’t forget about Gyarados. It’s Feraligatr but better in almost every way.
@ultimatevtgb7551
8 ай бұрын
Typhlosion's movepool is dry in gen 4, it's a one trick pony excelling at spamming fast powerful STAB attacks like Fire Blast or Eruption. Although its offensive options are quite diverse, its Attack stat is too mediocre to make good use of most available coverage attacks, hindering its versatility. Feraligatr suffers no such thing, there is no limit to its offensive versatility. Its great 105 Attack makes good use of all the best attacks it can learn: Aqua Tail/Waterfall, Ice Fang, Crunch, Superpower/Low Kick, Earthquake, etc. and for the cherry on top, it can learn Sword Dance to sweep a whole time, its good bulk and typing letting it set up with little chance of dying. I'm going to be honest with you, the main story Johto adventure is so piss easy, what I care about is how my team will handle the Kanto post-game, so even though it takes longer for Feraligatr to reach its full potential in the main story, you absolutely reap the rewards for your patience as Faraligatr plows through the Kanto post-game.
Also Typhlosion in gen 2 can deal with water types with the thunder punch TM in Celadon's deparment store, an special move in gen 2, but it becomes phisical and a post game tutor move
always goated content 🙏🏻 inspired me to start my shorts 🥹
You know what is the best starter for every region your favorite it doesn't matter if your favorite is weak or strong as long as you enjoy your adventure with them. That's what matters.

Yeah your definitely right and the Pokemon you pick for your team
Typhlosion has huge coverage. Flamethrower, earthquake, return, thunderpunch, he gets massive coverage.
This video makes me happy, thank you Mikey
Totadile is my favourite Pokemon in the entire series so i picked him in every playthrough, named him Chompy in my latest playthrough
HGSS Feraligatr can easily solo the game with Waterfall, ice fang/punch, crunch, & earthquake. That hits 11 types super effectively & nothing resists it. I’d say give it dragon dance but it’s an egg move which you can’t really get since it’s your starter unless you plan ahead
This is the Totodile line love that I am excited to see.
on my first playthrough of heartgold, i solo'd the entire game with an unevolved totodile
Feraligatr can learn dragon dance. Truly a monster
Totodile the goat, just spam ice fang throughout the playthrough 😂😂😂
I started my pokemon journey with a fire starter in red and blue and stuck with fire starters ever since then. Yes they are more difficult to level and may not be everyone's go to but I find the end rewards so much more satisfying than any other starter type
As a Totodile fan (And irl Alligator simp) I'm overjoyed to see him get so much love. Love my little gator~
My boy Feraligatr finally gets some recognition! I'm normally biased towards the fire starters, but this is the exception, since I adore crocs. I never really played the GB Color games, but I have played Heartgold, and Feraligatr DOMINATED the playthrough.
Thanks for showing us the tutor moves, most of them being from the battle frontier, inaccessable in a main playyhrough
I love chikorita and restarted my elite 4 feraligatr run because I wanted to play with chikorita instead plus it is fun to play as the underdog. And I love the design of chikorita all 3 stages
It’s good to see that someone knows these facts, and also good to see that Chikorita does get love by some people in the comments. It always feels like Cyndaquil gets the Charmander treatment (which honestly might as well be renamed to the fire-starter treatment for Gens 1-5)
I usually go with the fire starters because fire types are often hard to find and even harder to find the ones I actually like. Or a water starter if I can get Arcanine or something similar.
Would love to see a starter ranking video going through what's best in their respective games and how they compare against all the other starters, if not already done.
until you remember the red garydos
The problem with Feraligatr in the remakes is that Magikarp are everywhere and Gyarados is better in literally every way. Similar coverage early on but Gyarados has a great secondary typing, access to Dragon Dance by level up, and Intimidate. There's lots of other water-type competition later too like Starmie, Kingler, and Tentacruel. Typhlosion brings good offenses with a largely unique typing and isn't nearly as quickly or heavily outclassed as Feraligatr (Arcanine is there, but that's exclusive to Heartgold).
I've seen a nuzlock with Chikorita and that thing is a monster. Not only it with stood super effective moves but ends up killing the opponent pokemon. And the three really tried to disowned it but in the end it made it through the first part and the second part then finally facing Red. So Chikorita earned that love
I loved the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon sounds throughout
I still made Totadile work in gen 2. Ice Punch being sold as a Tm was extremely helpful.
I know chikoritas hard mode, but I wound up getting a shiny one while sr'ing the starters in hg and I actually had the easiest time with whitney. maybe my quilava just sucked as a kid, but my shiny bayleef Basil steamrolled miltank by setting up a reflect to tank the rollout and hitting razor leaf crits. I gained a lot of respect for the little grass dino
I remember actually picking Chikorita when I first played Gold. I hadn't looked up anything about it or the game. I just thought it was nice, and it does have a good support movepool. If I got the gen 4 version, I'd definitely pick Totodile.
Feraligatr may have higher physical attack than special attack, but its special attack is good enough to make use of Surf and Ice Punch in Gen II, and its physical attack is good enough to get utility out of non-STAB Dig. You can also get a Totodile with AncientPower if you're willing to level a male Corsola up to 43 and breed it with a female in the Totodile line. Definitely don't sleep on Totodile in a Gen II playthrough if you value utility.
Finally, the love for my little blue gator. Totodile was my first starter and SoulSilver was my first Pokémon game. Really happy I didn’t choose wrong all those years ago. I was 5 when I first got it, I’m now 19 and finished everything in that game and my final team was Feraligatr Crobat Rapidash Exeggutor Tyrannitar and Dragonite
Feraligatr carried me to my first ever indigo plateau win back in HG! That’s why it’s my favorite Pokémon to this day!
YAY its a new short :)
When I was a kid I’d always start with charmander because you can just get a Lapras, starmie, or a poliwrath for a water type and bellsprout or gloom for grass. I usually don’t get a starter at all because you don’t need one.
You don’t get a physical water move until lvl 50 with aqua tail. Typhlosion is the best starter for gen 2 and 4 and it’s not even close. He’s also the only starter to have positive matchups with the gyms with his stab typing.
Dragon Claw is also a TM that you can win at the Goldenrod Department Store that Feraligtr is now compatible with giving you at least one way for a fully evolved Pokémon to do Super Effective Damage on Clair’s Kingdra which no other Pokémon can do…
Will patiently wait for the day we get a Grass/Dragon Meganium form. Is it a good typing? It’s meh. But will it be cool? Probably not but I need them to do Bayleef justice somehow.
Awesome vid
Totodile is still great in GSC. Rage sweeps the first three gyms, and even with mediocre Special Attack, it can still help against Morty with Bite, Jasmine with Surf and Dig, and Clair and Lance with a combination of Surf and Ice Punch.
Love to see the Meganium line appreciation!!
Chikorita still the most adorable can’t take that from her
Chikorita all the way. My Meganium had Poison Powder, Synthesis, Razor Leaf, Petal Dance in my HGSS Playthrough. At least I didn't struggle with Whitney and Clair. I also fared well in Bugsy's Gym. The Poison setup then switch to a Pokemon with a type adv had me going.
Wow, the clarity I knew but couldn’t put into words - Yes
Just doing a Soul Silver run and slightly regretting picking Cyndaquil. Knowing the coverage that Totodile will eventually get, I think I would have found it much more useful. However I also run a Lanturn and Poliwrath on the team to try and make up for it. Typhlosion has done me some good though and it did plenty of good stuff in the Pokemon League.
Chikorita, statis effects are overlooked. Also you can find many good water/fire in the wild but chikorita is the best grass you can find
It's interesting that Meganium actually had a bit of competitive use in Gens 2 and 3 because of its access to both Earthquake and Swords Dance. But yes, Typhlosion is crazy in Gen 2, and getting nerfed in Gen 4 still hurts me. Although I had fun recently playing through HeartGold using a Typhlosion that I bred to learn Extrasensory.
Chikorita also had a unique early game advantage that Cyndaquil and Totodile lacked- access to a STAB move earlier. Chikorita got Razor Leaf way earlier than Cyndaquil got Ember or Totodile got Water Gun, and Razor Leaf is the strongest move of the three. Granted, that move isn't a huge help against the first two Gyms, but Chikorita is more of a supporter, by and large. Even so, it can hold its own with Razor Leaf when the situation necessitates.
Cyndaquil, hadn't even finished the short.
I love your videos please make more
One thing that I love to do when starting a play through is getting all 3 regional starters from save file and beat the game with those 3 on my team. And I can say for sure that in my soulsilver run feraligatr carried my ass so hard
Bro changed his opinion after no catching challenge in heart gold
* holds totodile* dis is my little gator/dile i love him
True! That’s why I always picked Totodile
Always used totodile in gen 4, when it turns into feraligatr I had it's moves to dig, countering electric, ice fang, to freeze and deal with grass types, surf for STAB, and shadow claw for crits.
When i was a kid probably around 5 when gen 2 came out i always used chikorita for some reason it was just my favorite
In Generation 2 and all its versions, I always go with Totodile. I love that little guy.
easy answer: geodude. get a geodude and then graveller early on, bit of grinding for first gym to get your first rock move, but then sweeps falkner and bugsy. it learns rollout (or an equivalent icr) to counter whitneys miltank, (morty is neutral against), chuck is the only gym its weak against, so probably best to grab a second mon to counter chuck. jasmine its ground type moves can easily take out her team (especially with two steel electric magnemites), pryce is ice, rock type takes him down. finally claire, since its not any of the three starters, dragon lacks its resistance, so it's pretty good against claire. i recently did a play through of crystal, and it was my first time using this strat. grabbed a geodude on the rocky bit above the first route, and swept through the entire game in a about 5-6 hours if i remember correctly (this doesnt include kanto, just johto)
Also Thunder Punch is a TM in Gen 2 which Typhlosion can learn, which was replaced in Gen 4 with Thunder which it cannot, vital Special Water coverage.
playing a nuzlocke crystal now, with totodile as my starter. Totodile suffers from movepool problems, there are no physical water stabs (aside from hidden power) that can make best use of it's high attack stat, even though feraligator it's able to learn stuff like earthquake. Ferligator does have access to the elemental punches (which are special, but good type coverage). it's typing goes neutral to almost every thing, and does have access to bite and crunch, but they're considered special attacks in gen 2, not physical. It is very durable though, even against weakness. Gen 3 and 4 fixed these issues, but those are my observations Edit: I wrote this before finishing the short lmao
I loved Chikorita on my play throughs. I found it was the eaisest play through as a kid. Damn I wanna play crystal again.
Meganium pretty much is useful for a good portion of the Kanto gym leaders. It’s also good against Chuck’s Poliwrath and all of Pryce’s Pokémon (albeit with the risk of getting hit by his ice moves). But yeah overall it does get hit pretty hard though
Back in gen 2, not only was the fire starter good early, it kept being the best choice because you could teach typho earthquake and thunderpunch.
