    Use J&J baby shampoo in your mask/s to prevent fogging. Squirt a little in rub around quick rinse. Trunk gets a lot of traffic next time hit some of the other more out of the way spots for some amazing snorkeling

    Thats a tough choice, both are really beautiful. The Beach isn't very big at Maho, and it is right off the road, so in terms of lounging in the sand and the serenity factor, Trunk Bay wins. However, the water is much calmer at Maho and you can snorkel with sea turtles/ rent paddleboards etc... So it depends on what you're looking for. We still snorkeled at Trunk, but it wasn't great. Either place, try to get there early!

    St. John is our favorite place, been going at least once a year since 2000. In fact, we were just there as well earlier this month. I do have to say that Trunk Bay is one of our least favorite beaches. It's definitely gorgeous to look at from the scenic overlook, but as you saw, it does get very crowded. The snorkeling has definitely/sadly deteriorated there over the years but it really never was as good as some of the many other excellent snorkeling spots on the island. Maho Bay has always been a lovely beach. One of our favorites. But the recent addition of Maho Bay Crossroads (the shops/restaurants at the west end of the beach) has really taken so much charm away. Newcomers love it, but long timers hate it. When we go, we definitely stick to the far end of the beach away from all of that mess! Skinny Legs is a "have to" for sure with arguably the best burger on the island, but when it comes right down to it, it's a burger. Still we go there at least once every time we're on STJ. Anyway, I hope you end up going back to St. John again - but when you do, be a little more adventurous regarding your beach selection and you'll be rewarded with beaches that are much less crowded, and the snorkeling is much better! If you haven't already seen it, this map will be very helpful: www.nps.gov/viis/planyourvisit/maps.htm

    I can agree with what you're saying about trunk bay. We headed to Cinnamon early in the morning the next day we were there and had a much better time. We much preferred that beach. As for snorkeling, we weren't really all that impressed with Trunk. It was ok, but I think it was the Snorkel Trail that really drew our attention. I've never seen one of those before.

    @@TheAwkwardTourists Yes, Cinnamon is a very nice beach. We do go to that one occasionally when we're in a somewhat less adventurous mood, and just want to hit a dependably nice beach. And the snorkeling there is definitely better than at Trunk Bay.

    Beautiful beaches there! If you want to keep your Toy Story Aliens👽 style "Dorkle" mask from fogging without any antifog spray/wipes you can spit on the inside of the lens a couple times, wipe it around, and give it a light rinse it out with the seawater. We do that all the time Scuba diving. It's cheaper than having to buy the antifog. Of course that will probably also remind you that a lot of people that rent masks also do it, so, you might want to make sure they disinfect the masks as well as the snorkle when you rent one! lol! 😵

  • @TheAwkwardTourists

    @TheAwkwardTourists

    We have tried the spit trick as well. It usually works pretty well but it didn't this time. We ended up going to the snorkel rental place and they sprayed some antifog for us that worked a little better

    TrunK bay is nice but by far not the best for snorkeling on STJ. Waterlemon and especially Haulover S. are far better...as is a quick outing with Low Key out of Cruz Bay to see bigger fish. Also, simple dish-soap or shampoo works wonders on those masks (anti-fog.) In addition to Zinc sunblock, I wear a long sleeve with collared rash-guard surftop. Sunblock comes off quickly in the water/elements. A physical barrier is best. Hats, even a portable umbrella if hiking exposed areas like up to Rams Head. Back of the neck and legs are very exposed if snorkeling for more than a few minutes. Coverage is key.
