Best Small Town Museum in USA? - Hopper, Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton

When we think about great art, we often think of the art in big museums like MOMA or the Art Institute of Chicago. But the truth is great art can be found all over this country, if you just know where to look.
Here's a glimpse at one such art museum in Terre Haute, IN.

It seems that John Rogers Cox was inspired by Edward Hopper, Grant Wood, and Thomas Hart Benton. I'd never heard of Cox, but his artwork is wonderful! Great video!!

I loved your approach to local museums, especially when they are based on such interesting stories of personal initiative! Very interesting, these three paintings by John Rogers Cox. I hadn't heard of this author before, but his works have a balance of mystery, innocence and telluric atmosphere that attract my attention... 😉 Thank you very much for this video!

The first video of yours that I have seen… Well done! Great selection of pieces, great music, and an interesting angle of getting away from the major metropoli (I think I made that plural up😀). Looking forward to more.

I love the paintings that you highlighted and it’s amazing that we have them here in our town. The Swope Art Museum also has original Marilyn Monroe (Andy Warhol) prints in rotation from its permanent collection. We recently had a Renoir (not sure if it was permanent or on loan) and many more recognizable names. It truly is a Midwest gem!

Nice dude! Throughly enjoyed your critique. Love finding out about new to me artist like John Rogers Cox. Beautiful work. I recently completed a landscape series for a commission I would have loved to seen them before I started but hey that is art in itself, find something new and make something beautiful, so pen and paper in hand. I am a fifty two year old printmaker/digital/mural artist in Melbourne Australia and the other day I had a lovely conversation with a elderly woman about graffiti on the train as we were heading into the city. She conveyed her displeasure with the scratchings that is painted on the walls as we zip past. I totally accept her point of view and expressed as such but then I explained my point of view. Firstly I find advertising boards on motorways or on buildings distasteful because their messaging is propaganda leading people to what the advertising wants them to think not thinking for themselves. One example I gave was a billboard twenty feet wide four metres tall asking men if they had erectile dysfunction and to call this number. Now yes erectile dysfunction is a problem amongst men but it was bright yellow with red and black writing but not in a good way. Lmao. I explained that with graffiti there are a number of things going on. Whenever I travel to a new city or town or country I look at the graffiti on the walls. You can see gang tags (which I stay well away from) or the political climate of a community there will be graffiti displaying this sentiment. The tag which you see high above ground represent the daredevils of the art form and many more things going on, but tags, graffiti, whichever label you want to put on it, it is also where you will find a new artist just wanting to express themselves. This for me represents a healthy art scene for somewhere I can fit in to. The woman thanked me for my interpretation and conversation before I had to leave the train. I don’t think I have convinced her otherwise but at least now she will think about it a little more whenever she is on the train.

love this video! there's a Pakistani restaurant in Indy with original Shepard Fairey prints: Chapati. The story of how they came to acquire them is a good one. Also, the Milton Glaser mural downtown turns 50 next year!

It’s funny. When I saw the Cox piece you show at 10:05 minutes into this article that it reminded me of something. It took a few minutes, but then I realized that it reminded me of the scene in Ghostbusters: Afterlife when the family is pulling up to Egon’s house in the rural town (at the 8:00 minute mark in the film). My memory failed me slightly in that I was remembering old farm equipment rather than old corrugated metal outside the house. Then at the 8:07 mark you see the house and it looks very similar to the one in Cox’s piece. I have no idea if that painting inspired the production designer or art directors for the film, but it sure seems possible.

I have enjoyed three of your vids so far. I had only learned about Grant wood recently in Art college. I am a mature student in a fine art college in Ireland and as part of our modernisms module I can across Wood. That particular Hopper has been a favourite of mine for a long time and I was wonderful to see it beside the wood. Cox is someone I need to do some more research on, but anyway I really enjoy your presentations and hope to get through them all and look forward to the future editions. I was disappointed with Hirst as well BTW. Conceptual art and ideation is cool to be sure but messing with the dates is a bit of a ringer.

Love your videos!! How about The Brandywine River Art Museum, which houses three generations of Wyeth works. Andy Wyeth had a correspondence with Robert Motherwell. The Delaware Art Museum. The Easton Academy Art Museum was a pleasant surprise for my wife and me when we first visited it in 2018.
