I'm 80 years old and was already confused before the two-minute mark. "...if you fall asleep and don't want the pillow below your legs, just pull it out..." Huh? When I'm asleep my right brain is, most of the time, smart enough to keep me from rolling out of bed, but it is not smart enough to reach under the covers and pull out or adjust pillows. That complex operation requires my left brain, which only functions when I'm awake. Even worse, while I'm asleep my right brain is sending all sorts of weird signals to my muscles, causing my body to assume various positions on my back and sides, (never on my stomach) which means that I rarely end up where I started, so those extra pillows in any given starting position are rarely going to do much good an hour or two later. What works best for me is sleeping on a firm surface, just slightly softer than a carpeted floor, and using a single goose-down pillow that squishes down to about one to two inches under the weight of my head. If I happen to wake up on my side, my left brain will direct me to fold the pillow in half to double thickness to reduce neck bending, and if I happen to wake up after rolling onto my back, my left brain will direct me to locate the pillow, fluff it up, and place it back under my head. In spite of my prostate and sciatica problems, I manage to get enough sleep to stay healthy enough to avoid my doctor but once or twice a year. He'll just say, keep doing what you're doing because it seems to be working.

The thing that keeps me from sliding down is using the wedge for the knees in addition to the upper body wedge. It can be a bit of a production to get them both situated, but it does work. It kind of mimics that “weightless” position some of the mechanical bed frames can do.

The thumbnail image is how I sleep... except I use a longer body pillow under my arm and wrap the one end under the small of my back. The slight tension really helps minimize/eliminate backaches and it keeps that part of my back nice and warm with no cold drafts on it.

I have RBBB. There's no fixing my heart's limited, possibly even congenital electrical system misfires BUT..... I get better oxygenation sleeping lightly on my left side 45% elevated propped with pillows, scoring 96% versus 92% saturation, pulse rate 57 versus 62 on my pulsometer. Wondrously, I also awake pain free from a musculoskeletal standpoint, plus I'm much more rested with better aeration. It's easier for me to go all night nose breathing. And a colder room puts more 02 in the lungs. I experimented around with positioning and a pulsometer. I bet everybody's different. But this really works for me and seems it took 5% load off my heart. I'm 77 and otherwise metabolically healthy. I now get out of bed with a bit more spring in my step. At 77 I need all the spring I can get! I might just be the smartest dead body in the morgue, but like you guys teach it's the simple tune-ups that make you as good as you can be. For what it's worth.

I am 42 and sleep on my stomach and notice that my face is practically smushed into the pillow. My head doesn’t seem to be just on its side and I’ve noticed over the last year my right eye is changing shape and is getting even more hooded than my left! My left eye is more almond shape while the right(smooshed) is more rainbow shaped on the top lid! I’m 42.. I workout daily pretty hard, use great skincare, minimal wrinkles, so the issue with my eyes is pretty noticeable, especially because I wear false lashes daily and if I don’t manipulate my liner and lashes it’s just ridiculous. How do you completely change how you sleep??? I already sleep very little and wake up frequently! I have back issues and when I try to sleep on my back, when I get up my back hurts bad! My issue is my lumbar naturally wants to curve in instead of being flat and that’s what hurts. I have to bend and push my lumbar up and out to relieve the pain because even standing it curves in. I have great posture(a grandma who yelled when we were young if we didn’t) so it’s not that! I’m at a loss… I just read sciatica(also currently flared) can be from stress/emotional stress, is that true?

Dear Brad & Mike: I’ve watched your videos about sleep positions and pillows but I still have an ongoing pain in the neck-worse than ever right now. I’m 61, use a CPAP and used to slept quite soundly with the old memory foam bed. It had no bounce-like a bag of cement-and it wasn’t always kind to my lower back but I slept soundly. I used 2 pillows: a cervical pillow which worked great for my neck, plus a large pillow for hugging (I’ve had both rotator cuffs repaired). 10 months ago we bought a Sleep Number adjustable bed. He sleeps just fine! It came with a memory foam pillow; seemed nice enough but right from Go I had pain/tightness in my neck/upper back. I couldn’t seem to find the right position so I tossed the new pillow and resumed my cervical and huggy pillow. Flat on my back with the cervical pillow destroys my neck/shoulders the next morning. It’s a tiny bit better if I sleep on the very flat huggy pillow, instead. I’m careful to place my head AND upper shoulders on the flat pillow. My best position is on my right side, but my exposed arm goes numb eventually so I wake often. A weird thing; bed seems higher in the center, because if I lay on my side facing the edge I am balanced and sleep fine… but if I face the center my body feels like it’s pulling towards the bed edge. Current Sleep Number setting is 85, and I’m no longer raising my upper body. Last few days I’ve had a wicked sharp pain in my neck; I’d guess a pinched nerve or something. Clearly I’m reinjuring my neck every night, straining it badly. I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. I don’t want to end up chronically injured-a bad disc-and wonder if I need a chiropractor. I’m virtually afraid of the bed, since I’m not sleeping well and waking up feeling awful. Does it sound to you guys like a bed issue? Pillows? Angle? I invite other viewers have experienced this to comment, too, please. I love your channel and recommend it to all my achy, over-50 friends. Thanks very much in advance for whatever insight you can give.
