NEA to a hawker where the revised rent was “almost 40 per cent” higher than the previous rate. He proceeded to slam the agency for raising hawker stall rents amid challenging times, saying that “it’s a horrible timing” to do so now. “Here we all are doing our best to #supportourhawkers, and there they are at same time raising the hawkers rent by almost 40%… Why oh why I ask. You may need to claw back to top up the national coffers but do your leaders even know it’s a horrible timing to do so now. This hawker had been languishing in sales this whole year,” said Mr Seetoh.

Haven’t been to India, but 90% of my friends who did have diarrhoea when they arrived in India for the first few days. It could be due to the food and prepared drinks they ate there. In Singapore, we have strict laws and guidelines for all food operators to observe good food safety and hygiene practices. The National Environment Agency NEA and Singapore Food Agency SFA conduct periodic checks on all F&B premises to ensure they comply to the regulations. All personnel handling food must own a WSQ food safety training certificate after completing a food safety course. Selling food on the streets is not allowed in Singapore. Food vendors need to obtain a license and adhere to the guidelines of food safety handling. In Singapore, you are much less likely to get diarrhoea from eating sold food but that doesn’t mean it cannot happen. That’s why our authorities constantly check on these food operators to optimise food safety standards. Staying vigilant is key.
